    • I once had a choir teacher say, about the baroque era, that it is frequently when aesthetically rules are tighter that artists get more creative, to be able to produce art that “respects” the rules of the era but also offers something new and interesting. Same applies here

    • I'd say that more than a musical genre with boundaries black metal is a lens through which you can cast music. It explains why so many of the subgenres are blackened versions of other metal genres (or of unrelated music, like blackened surf rock lol)

  • Atmospheric Black Metal is truly a spiritual experience. I was more into Metalcore, Death Metal, Deathcore, until I started to Discover Akhlys which combined Metal and ambient, two things dear to my heart.

    • some of these are splitting hairs a little bit, like blackgaze and post-black are basically the same thing, depressive black metal and melancholic black metal are the same thing, Epic Black and Folk Black are the same thing, Unblack barely counts as a subgenre as it is based on lyrical themes. It's still a good video though

    • ​@@garfield5667Also, there are blackened crust, nsbm is not musical style, it can be everything, from "normal" black metal like Ad Hominem, folk black metal, raw black metal like Goatmoon, or mix black metal/ RAC like Absurd. There is even psychedelic black metal, Oranssi Pazuzu is the best example. There is avant-garde, dissonant black metal too like Deathspell Omega, industrial bm etc... And there are bands like Ondskapt, Ofermod, Acherontas, Akhlys, Nightbringer who call themselves orthodox, occult bm. Industrial BM, the pioneer was Snorre "Thorns"

    • Rotting Christ used to be black metal, but they've steadily added more and more gothic and folk elements to their stuff. Some of their songs are pretty much Viking Metal or Pagan Metal, while some of their songs are just Gothic Metal. But a lot of those gothic songs they have still retain Black Metal elements

    • Not the early releases. First two were heavily standard black metal of the time. Mother north very symphonic. Rebel extravaganza was quite industrial. All of those albums are absolute killers. Only got black n roll-ish following Volcano.

  • Nice video, black metal is my favourite metal genre, and each band has its own unique style. But i think Finnish black metal could be categorized as a separate subgenre as well, it has a distinct riff style that is very easy to recognize. And it seems you left out two specific black metal subgenres that could turn the comment section into Operation Barbarossa 2.0 😉

  • Thx for another great video! Triarchy of the lost lovers is my favorite Rotting Christ album, actually! I grew up in the haydays of black metal with Enslaved, darkthrone, Dissection, Brzm, etc. I lost interest in the black metal scene around the year 2000, many of the same same bands were around and the big bands didn't put out a lot of great stuff for me (except Darkthrone, they never dissapoint)... But I thank you for introducing Eldamar, I never heard of them, but now it's on my "to check out" list. Cheers from Belgium

    • Listen to "Sing for the damage we've done" by Harakiri For the Sky. It is a great song and might be a nice gateway into the genre for you. Also, try "Caravan of Broken Ghosts" by Darkthrone. It is another good song that can help tune your ear for Black Metal. And if you want to explore more, you can try out "the Hordes of Nebulah", "Quintessence", and "In the Shadow of the horns" also by Darkthrone.
