Gearbox Repair - 8x8 Amphibious Vehicle Argo REBUILD Ep.3
Steel rims and frame get sandblasted and powder coated, the planetary differential brake steering gearbox parts get cleaned in parts washer, a couple of gears get replaced with new gears, new bearings and circlips installed. The planetary differential gets assembled and worn out reverse idler gear oilite bushing replaced with homemade brass bushing. The project came to a halt with a damaged bearing hole in the aluminum gearbox case. I have to figure out how to repair it so I can finish the gearbox assembly.

Will the brass bushings you made work okay in place of oilite bushings? I'm not saying that they won't work, I'm just curious since I don't know 🙂
The Offspring - "Come Out And Play"
And Americana ?
Word.
Yup
This ☝🏼
The time and cost of getting those parts blasted was 100% worth it.
Quite the gearbox for a utility vehicle. Good on the manufacturer for supplying a service manual! Nice work.
The Offspring is a guilty pleasure of mine too as are spur diffs
That was my guess for the music too.
Third vote, but what song is my issue.
@@middomaker I give u a clue: you gotta keep em separated.
@@RooMan93 ❤ COME OUT AND PLAY!
An amazing transformation of the chassis, that gearbox casing is a mess but we all know you're going to fix it and make it look easy too
That aluminum case needs some TLC for sure. TIG might work, but without the alloy spec, it is risky. I’m confident you have already figured it out and remedied the damage by now. 😉
The only thing wrong with this video is it was not long enough. 😂 thanks Donn for taking us along.
just play it in slow motion 🤣
Yes! The worst part of Donn's videos is seeing, "to be continued", although that means more is coming! I guess we just have to be patient. 😁
@@jlucasound // I couldn't agree more-in fact, sometime back when I saw that one of my favorite channels started a new series, I began saving each episode in a playlist so I could watch them w/o waiting [like I am now]. It was hard at first, but I've gotten used to it ad it's well worth the wait.
The Offspring Enjoying your videos!
I highly recommend aluminum brazing rods with a MAP gas torch. It should be a easy repair. Use the old bearing race and build up the surface around the race. The brazing rod will not stick to the old race. You can practice on a piece of aluminum and a old race.
Great idea dude that was what I imagined as well only I probably would tig it with the race in there Cheers
Keep it coming we all enjoy watching what you do
Awesome, as usual! Song Guess: Offspring/Come Out and Play
Hi Donn, Great work as always, you're a neurosurgeon in a mechanical world.
That case is a little rough, but, i'm sure you can fix it. Seen a case explode because the owner didn't believe in maintanence. Owner wasn't happy, said it was Argo's fault. We straigtened him out. Mind you, never saw a frame crack that bad. Must have been really abused by the previous owner. Paint on it looks really nice Donn. My parts supplier is beside ODG/Argo's plant and Amin offices here in Canada. Seen the Sherps getting assembled there now. Good trade, you send us Sherps, we send you Argos.....
wait, they're working on SHERPS there!? holy schnikes!
Oiy that bearing hosing at the end... ouch!i just rebuilt one last winter... a Gen 1. That's a Gen 2. Cool to see what changed and what stayed the same.
The brass bearing you made to replace the 'Olite' one may not last too long. The bearing you are replacing is made from sintered phosphor bronze and is porous so it holds oil, the brass one won't. Anyway great vid as usual.
Realized that you were a serious repair restoration person when I saw the lathe in your shop. Your father or grandfather must have taught you well. Can tell the way you work that you have been doing this type of work for years.
How do you know how to put it all back together baffles my mind. You are amazing!
According to the manual. 👍
Great progress Donn, amazing patience and attention to detail. I am looking forward to the next instalment 👏
5:24 the offspring come out and play 🙂 keep em seperated
The guy is super talented, and a great video editor.
Fantastic following your projects. Thanks for sharing.
The Offspring for the win!
I guess the band is 'The Offspring' 😎. Great projects and video's by the way. It's a plessure to watch!! 😃
What a great video. Very smart gentleman.
The band and song is Prince & "purple rain" 😳😉
Thank you, i learn a lot , always a pleasure watch your channel 👍👍👍👍
Doing it the right way as always! Thanks for the inspiration.
One thing for sure when Don gets done it will be a hundred percent better than it was brand new!
Fits like a glove, went together well, looking forward to the case repair and having it all back together too. You're doing a fantastic job Donn. Keep up the great videos and all the fun you have around your shop. Fred.
Good thing you had a manual to follow reassembling it. The song might be "Come out and play" by Offspring
Ya gotta keep ‘em separated Donn
Man, that thing is chowdered!
Offspring come out and play was the song 😂definitely took me a minute to figure it out
The Offspring. Come out and Play
Well done cant wait for more thanks for the hard work you put into your videos
That last shot is a challenge, Good luck.
Those parts look brand new after sandblasting and fresh paint! 👍💪✌
Sir you are A GENIUS 👍😇👌✨🚀😌 Cheers 🍻
That's enjoying life! Repair a gearbox and drinking a beer! Terviseks
Hi Donn, just a suggestion; with your parts cleaner surround the bottom of the tank with 10 mm copper tubing. Drill 2 to 3 mm holes in one side of the tubing not completely through. Add a valve to adjust air through the solvent it’s not perfect but it does help with the heaver grime on the parts. I leave it bubbling all night, Play safe from Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada.
😂🔧 This video had me hooked from start to finish! The only downside? It left me craving for more. Donn, thank you for taking us along on this epic journey of rebuilding the 8x8 Tracked Amphibious Vehicle and fixing the broken gearbox. Excellent work 👍👍👍 . Thank you for sharing. Take care of yourself 🇨🇦
Coming along nicely. Something like this with a blown engine or ruined gearbox might be a good candidate for electric conversion.
Except electric would be really heavy.
@@CrewsyDepends what your range goals are. For 20-30 mile range and using Lithium cells I don't see weight being too much of an issue. I mean the thing has 8 large flotation tyres at low PSI so is always going to have reasonably low ground pressure even if loaded up with batteries. Realistically though you aren't going to be covering large distances in something like this as it has zero suspension and a pretty harsh ride (I've driven an Argo which is similar). It's also the batteries which are the expensive part, so keeping to a low-ish target range will keep the cost *and* the weight down.
@Charles Brainard Yes, but that's not something that would ever be within my budget personally so is of limited appeal. Converting a UTV or something like an Argo to be a relatively low speed, low range, low cost electric offroad farm workhorse is something I could see myself doing at some point. Not many examples of that sort of conversion around though.
great videos and amazing work! I'm surprised, that you didn't reinforce the frame in those areas where it was cracked so badly! Btw: I liked your long version on how the gearbox woks better!
Offspring - come out and play 🤟🏼
Great as always
I'm just guessing here, but will you just machine out that damaged bearing hole and insert a suitably sized bushing to repair it? Seems like the safest course. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
Very nice workmanship and video. 👍
I really like how you do step by step so we can understand it.... Great Video 👊👊👊👊
Awesome video. Great narration and editing. Cool project.
A very good watch.
Noting more thirst quenching than Corona.
brass will not hold p to a bronze bearing. I have made several brass bushing, they didn't last. I know you have the gear box together, but I would get bearing bronze or get the correct bushing. If you don't replace it, keep a good eye (ear) on any noise from the gear box. I enjoy your projects. PS, I was a tool maker so I have made many bushing in my time.
My bad, it might be bronze. There's no way for me to tell.
Scratch it, bronze is usually softer, that’s why it makes such a good bearing, the soft tin rich won’t weld to the hard steel surface. If tin based bearings ever over heat the tin oxidises, tin oxide is very hard and it rips apart the surface. I had to chase a bronze bearing recently and was pleasantly surprised at the price for a sintered bronze after I had seen the price of bronze bearing stock.
@@DonnDIY Messingut puurides/treides eraldub puru. Pronksiga tuleb laast.
Would be VERY amazed if that worn out sintered bronze bushing in the reverse gear was a custom size. You can cut the bushings to length so just order the right OD and ID. The brass will hold just fine till then.
Happy you brought it up as well. I was also wondering if the factory clearance for this bushing was that loose. For the cheap price, replacement sintered bushings are a lot easier to procure. I have seen machined bronze bushings made with oil channels instead of sintered material.
I like the clean work you do.
Hello Donn good job
Man... i do not envy the task of fixing that bearing pocket. That said, i've had to fix one in the past and i've had ... success with this roundabout method. I went to the next size up bearing OD. Back then i didn't have a mill, so i got help from a friend and had him cut the bearing pocket next size up. It does work, but at least in my case (literally and figuratively) the bearing pocket boss, is just big enough to work. I always feel that one day i'll find that lathe gearbox explode or something, consequently, i don't use that lathe in its lowest gears. It does work, but not well.
Great work as always
Great job as usual Don, I like these resurrection videos , keep them coming Cheers from Aus
you could just stick in a couple of sur-ron motors or similar. then you could do tank turns!!
Can't wait to see it finished
Love your show . Hex bar looked like brass not bronze, brass is crap as a bearing , cheers
Thank you my friend
Looks nice, good work 👍
I Can't wait to see part 2 Good job Dude 👍😊👍
This was already part 3 of this series. 😋 Or do you mean part two of the gearbox repair?

Uauhhh, beautiful work
good work
Cheers, isn't everything better tasting after hard work? I like to have coffee and it is atleast two times better.
I'd bore the chewed up transmission case out just enough to get a round bore and glue in a sleeve with a bearing retaining compound. (Loctite 680 is a good one) They're essentially super-glue for metal and a go-to problem solver of mine. Should be able to measure the center location from the opposite case half and transfer it over.
Great idea!

Thanks for the sub!
@@DonnDIY Thx u for the great videos mate!
Is there enough thickness to the bearing pocket to overbore it and sleeve the hole?

The Offspring - Genocide. Great band and song🤘... I cheated though and played the video at 0.25x speed 😅
Perhaps mill out the case and press in a steel sleeve?

should have used bronze for the bushing as it is more appropriate. Great job
It should be bronze, I said it wrong in the video. Oops! 😋
Never use brass for bushings. Always bronze.......brass is for lamps and pretty door knobs
