Removing the Engine & Transmission from my High Mileage D2 S8

I follow the workshop manual to learn how to pull the 40v 4.2 engine out of the 2001 Audi S8. Although the body panels and frame are aluminum, most of the hardware (and definitely the subframe) is majorly rusted. The car and I do battle as I complete my way through a handful of pages of steps that end up taking 4 weeks of holidays, evenings and weekends.
Chapters:
00:00 - Welcome
01:01 - The plan meets utter failure
03:53 - Steady progress and learning up front
14:10 - Custom Quickjack extensions
17:41 - Finishing work under the car
23:54 - Removing the engine and trans together
31:08 - On the next Survivor

  • I, much like yourself, gets myself into crazy projects like this. Be it on an Audi, BMW, VW, somehow I end up rebuilding a whole car it seems. Something that's just suppose to be a reliable daily, turns into a huge project.

  • Last year i bought a 2001 Audi A6 with a V6 engine and did a similar job, but I didn't have the courage or the equipment to pull the engine off. I just removed the front of the car changed the timing belt, water pump, valve covers & camshaft gaskets, and patched the exhaust pipe, It took me two months to finish the job, even without shooting videos as you do. you did a great job.

Im not new to cars or motorcycles by any means but i do happen to be new to the b7 audi s4 world, so any b7 audi s4 4.2 content is welcome! Just bought a 08 with a 6 speed manual about 2 months ago. Doing cam cover gaskets intake manifold gaskets as we speak.. Anyhow, keep up the good work!

    • @@user-rk9tx1rg8i When the intake manifold is off, I highly suggest replacing the oil spray valve and 2 check valves under the valley pan. That good oil and pressure will buy you time while you eventually come up on a timing service. I have a video on it back in the 25quattro S4 series if you need a reference.

  • If you have the budget a lift table is a nice tool to have. It came in handy, especially working alone, doing an engine swap on my s4

    • Yeah! It's on the garage wish list for sure. In fact, not having one of those is partially why I opted to pull the engine and trans as one, oppose to separating the trans and dropping the engine with the frame and walking the entire assembly out.

  • Going by memory on this but, the OG belly pan had a small NACA duct that piped air into the alternator elbow. You may want to add one or get the actual belly pan. It would be a hoot if you cut one into your roadsign, plastic ones are pretty cheap, especially if you look in autosport supply or small aircraft supply. Also, you can also replace just the cam adjuster shoes if they are cracked or worn. The number of chain links on top of each adjuster are not the same, that is because one is pulling the intake cam from the top while the other is pulling from the bottom. As for your O2 sensor corrosion, that's water from the firewall moat finding its way into the passenger compartment. Under the front carpets is common, mine actually flooded into the HVAC air inlet and interior ductwork. Keep the firewall drains clear.

    • Thanks for the info Brian, appreciate it. I'm all over the naca duct idea...in the long run, I'd love to design a custom aluminum skid plate with certain service ports and air inlets in it.

  • 1:22 Curious why the QJ is hanging on the wall for this job? 12:14 Ah, the jack points don’t lineup with the standard non-extended model. The jack points on a B8 A4 are 59” apart which is just at the 60” limit of the standard models. If I didn’t have another vehicle with a shorter wheelbase an with hindsight I would get a TLX model for use with Audis. 12:31 Pintle caps. The pintle is the needle that moves when energized. 26:25 The QJ needs to manage the weight of the vehicle at all times by itself (no floor jacks) and MUST be on the locks when you are working on it. Disregarding the warnings in the owners manual will result in the car tipping or falling off the QJs. Lowering the vehicle without the wheels on may result in the suspension contracting them ground and the QJ is only designed to lift the vehicle from a height made by possible by the tires. 30:09 In a standard two car garage the engine should be facing the garage door so you can make use of the door opening to pull the engine crane with engine away from the body. 31:09 Well done! Videos like this are an incredible resource for the Audi community.

  • now that you have the front off does it look like a JHM Oil Cooler and Auxiliary Radiator Delete Kit will bolt on?

    @benbrooks7613@benbrooks7613 Жыл бұрын
    • Hey Ben - Nope. The side of the block is designed entirely different than the BHF or equivalent with the main difference being that the oil filter housing is down there. There's almost always a way to custom build an external cooler but how that would be done on this engine is not apparent to me yet.

      @FigureItAudi@FigureItAudi Жыл бұрын
    • @@FigureItAudi interesting, I have a 08 s5 with a 32v CAUA v8. Based on Audi part numbers and schematics looks like b7 s4 40v oil cooler kit fits it. I was just wondering if it was similar design across all generations. Thanks for the response

  • Something to check once you have good access: leaks where the HVAC passes through the firewall and other possible points around the scuttle and firewall. These cars notoriously suffer leaks into the cabin, my own has the problem and has to be parked facing downhill to prevent further ingress. A leak might be responsible for that corrosion in the plug socket for the O2 sensor.

    @highlandmalt6368@highlandmalt6368 Жыл бұрын
    • Re: O2 sensor - that was my thought as well, or at the least it's simply a design flaw to keep an unsealed plug like that under carpet that is clearly exposed to water via melted snow off your boot, etc. None the less, I do plan to continue stripping back the engine bay and seeing what's behind the firewall. There are more issues I've found but just didn't include in this episode.

    • I pulled the procedure from the 8 cylinder manual found on forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=9345. My S8 should have the AYS motor which isn't listed in the manual, but I can confirm that the manual represented the correct diagrams and steps.

    • Also, you guys will find info regarding 'Botang's Hole' on the A8parts forum. Notorious for water ingress into the footwells. Easier to remedy whilst the engine is out. Also there is an A8parts thread on the various drain points on the car which get blocked - they all need cleaning out. Owned 2 of these and they are fantastic beasts but at this age most will need remedial work. Not ruling out owning a third but it will need to be absolutely mint and all work already done 🤑🤑🤑

    • I'm unlikely to even look at the S4 until March or April. Like I mentioned in the video, I have a full time job and what you see on this channel is the result of my evening and weekend time dedicated to projects and this community. The priority right now is advancing the S8 engine build and uncovering the full scope of the project.

  • Why not install a 2 post lift in your garage? Looks like you have the head room

    @gto-st5qm@gto-st5qm Жыл бұрын
    • Not enough pennies in my piggy bank yet. I do have the room; when the garage was designed and built a few years ago, I ran a 30 amp line up on the far wall, used the high angle trusses, and created 6" thick slab sections where a 2 post can be anchored. One day...
