My only "complain" is just that I think the checker pieces should have been doubled with another studed piece under for easier grabbing.
I have the other chess set (40174) they did, but this one looks so SO much better! It's absolutely beautiful, definitely on my wish list now.

Nice coverage on all the new stuff Jang. Reliable as always. Been taking your advice ever since I Jangafied my traxxas rustler yeaaaaars ago. Keep it up 👏
Can’t say I ever played chess master 2000 but Lego did teach me how to play chess with the Lego chess pc game. Loved the little cartoons with the cowboys and pirates
I didn't play Chessmaster 2000, but my favorite back in the day was Battle Chess! I loved watching the animations when you would take your opponents piece! This is a pretty great set, but I do prefer the ability to store pieces. I suppose that could be easily remedied with some creativity!
One of my bro's is a chess fanatic. This looks like an ideal gift!
I dont mind Ivory/Brown but I prefer the Black/White. Best part about Lego is.. you can just buy all the colors you want and change it to any color you want.
A bit mixed feelings about this.....while it looks just like a nice traditional chess game, as a result it's not that much of a display piece. And as such, the lack of storage space feels like a wrong choice to me. And then those checkers pieces....is anyone ever gona use those? Also, for mostly pretty normal and unprinted pieces, €75 feels a tad much. Asa whole it feels like a compromise between a play set and a display set, and does neither particularly well.
That set really looks classy. A Must Have for me. And a classy video too. As always. 😊
Technic ball-end’s in tan again! That’s a rare one coming back.
Being bored at my dad’s office as a kid playing Chessmaster 2k. That’s how I learned the game.
Looks awesome great preview 👍
Love it. I already have an older chess set but this looks AMAZING. Definitely will be getting.
Oh wow, this one I will buy for certain!
I also think it looks solid, the chess set will be good in many settings. Looks the series my dad bought to teach us how to play.
30.76 cm size, wow I don't remember Lego to be so specific in size, to the millimeter.
Great video😊
As a user of Firefox, using the LEGO website, never elicits a feeling of comfort.
I have the black and white chess board from quite a few years ago. you can take off the top and store the pieces inside of it. I'm super excited about this set. The colors are gorgeous!
I like the way the last set had studs in the middle of the squares. but the pieces and base are so much better. May just have to modify it myself.
Would it be cool to watch you play few rounds of chess/checkers for a review on this set
Thanks for your thoughts on this set, Jang. Well, it looks better than the old 40174 set but it has only got about 50% of the 40174 pieces and it costs $10 more. I think the old one was the better deal.
Definitely get this and put in June Top Wishlist.😁😆
The grey SNOT piece could easily be swapped for a 1x1 with a pin hole, would also get rid of the stud.
Probably going to buy this.
this is really nice but i think the board should’ve had a stud in each square so the pieces can attach to it. the pieces are too lightweight to hold firmly (the pieces are too light)
My kids got into chess this year and I just missed the last set going on clearance before I realized I wanted it. Definitely getting this one instead of overpaying on bricklink for the old one.
Classy, displayable, certainly playable
Looks really nice! Would’ve helped to have a round plate under the checkers, and I’d love for it to fold and store the game pieces, but I’ll take it!
Would be interesting if they ever try making the Star Trek style 3d chess set
I love this set :D
The website says the queen has the minifigure statue, which means that the chess board is set up wrong since the queen always starts on a space that is the same color as her.
I wish i had the pirate chess set but i did have the Viking set really enjoyed it even added it to the rollercoaster
For the earlier classic chess set, I bought a dozen each of red and blue 2x2 round tiles with stud, partly to allow them to stack tidily when stored away, but also to allow more stable “crowning.” This set could use a couple of black and white ones that could then be crowned by the piece that makes it all the way across. At least stacking wouldn’t be as much of a concern since piece storage isn’t an integral part of this set.
This is a cool coffee table piece.
Not seeing this yet but maybe because of where I'm at and the time. Mountain time here. Looks good though.
I would have preferred a more simple and classic border around the board
yes the shiny tiles look great for display but if you are actually going to use the board the rough finish would have been better
Wow this is wonderful! I did not see this one coming…. I’m kind of surprised they didn’t do a Space Chess Set. Seems like the year of Space.
I think I had Chessmaster 2000 on the Amiga. Although I preferred Battlechess ... just watching playing against itself.
The existence of this may convince me to finally learn chess, its very pretty
As a chess fanatic I'm excited they made a "serious" chess set, and I'd love to own it (and play competitive games with it!) but it's a LITTLE overpriced for my tastes. $50.00 is about what I'd pay for it. The gold pieces sticking out on the side are nice-looking but as a chess player I think they'd get in the way. A flatter board would be better (and drop the price).
My only real complaint is the microfigure that serves as the King's cross. It sticks out too much and doesn't look the part.
I didn’t played Chessmaster 2k but I did played and still have the CD for Chessmaster 10th Edition
I can see flushing of all these [cool] LEGO Ideas chess projects...
the old one 40174 was 65$ and twice as many pieces almost
They could've used the horse head mold from Animal Crossing for the knight???
it is nice, i don't think the piece/price ratio is that good all things considered, but if it's ever on a decent sale i'll pick it up
I thought I wanted this set, but it’s $100 Canadian and I don’t feel like I can justify that cost for Chess. I would need to buy myself a regular chess set, prove to myself that I would regularly play it, and then I could justify this one. I also wish they recreated what they did with a different set (maybe it was the pirate chess?) where you could store the pieces into the set for easy storage.
This looks so much better than the white and black older chess set I have. I played Chessmaster 10th edition, does that count?
Usually, there is a ratio to respect for better chess playability. The tower height should be the same as a chessboard square. Here pieces seem way too big for the chessboard, which will feel overcrowded.
No, the ratio is piece width to square size. There is some rough analog of relative height of pieces but it is not relative to value but outward from the king in an original staunton design relative height to the Parthenon in Greece - I believe they thickened the base of the rook to compensate for it being shorter but having more value than the minor pieces. The width of those pieces vs. square size has varied over time, but since about 1980 it seems to have standardized into the "two pawns can almost fit in a square" though that wasn't always the case - looking at photos in the late 19th and early to mid 20th century the boards would feel "cramped" at a tournament today (and against regulation IIRC which has standardized the square width and piece widths range as well as the pattern of pieces usable in a tournament setting in at least the United States). Height follows from that because a piece too high will be unstable which decreases playability (people accidentally knocking the pieces over), even if the chess pieces are weighted. In this one, the heights seem much higher than a standard set because of that. But if you look, pre-staunton sets (like St. George) or austrian coffeehouse sets are very tall. This may be another reason why LEGO is calling this set a "traditional" set.
Thought it would be more expensive!
It's cool! But i think the queen is to much tall
i feel i prefer the previous black and white set
pawns, bish and knights are so right. the rooks queens and especially kings needed anpther pass imo.
It looks really nice, but compared to a typical human chess set it's going to feel small, and I worry that the pieces are too top heavy. I think they should have made the bases a bit thicker to help with that.
To be clear to other's, it's smaller than a standard/"tournment" set, but it'd be categorized above a portable one. The closest analog would be "library" sized. A tournament board has 55mm or 2.25" squaires. This one has (by my reckoning) 33mm squares. The library set right in front of me right now is 35mm squares (Chessnut Air+). Top heavy is a valid complaint/possibility, but making the base wider is likely infeasible. First of all, LEGO is part restricted (e.g. I figured it's 33mm because 1.3" is the width of a 4x4 plate), as well as the style for the last century has been for a certain width of pieces to squares as being proportional (a King would be about 70-80% of the width / a pawn being abotu 55% of the width / stacking two pawns inside the square). It's supposed to be a playable toy set and for that this is likely to be great. I think the only thing missing is the piece storage when not in use, but, as Jang mentioned, the price point would be way wrong for the market at this point if they made the board a box like in earlier models.
should has magnets.
I did play Chessmaster 2000 and Battle Chess. Could not win at Chessmaster 2000.
Why did they use the mini minifigure for the king instead of the actual fluted crown piece they have?
Not a bad price, I like the pieces but the board itself I dont really like board, the light nougat and gold and shape is awkward looking next to each other for me hmm looks better in the irl photos tho
I love chess!
That looks like a NICE chess set
Nice chess pieces, but the edge treatment on the board drives me nuts. It's just a mess, in my eyes.
Idk you can get a really nice real chess set for the same price
The size feels off as it is only about 3/5ths the size of a regulation sized chessboard.
I really like this set excrpt for the knights, they really look a little out of place
I still prefer my Harry Potter ones look just as a chess set it’s cool that’s it’s looks wooden tho
Good as a display piece, again Lego changing to Display Well over Play Well. However, I wouldn't bother buying it as an actual chess board. Too expensive. That being said, there's a version of Chess out there called Fairy Chess that's totally worth the price.
I feel like it's not very practical, like the pieces are going to fall apart from grabbing & placing them so much
Owning the last one that price makes no sense at all. Designwise it is okayish but nothing more
No studs where they’re needed. 😕
The rooks look a little off to me
80 dollars for a chess board ridiculous should be no more then 50
This is an awesome set, but its overpriced. $75? should be $50! The old one was bigger, had 1450 pieces and was $65
The king looks so awkward, too tall and too slim in the middle, don't like the piece on top's different color either.
While this looks awesome it exposes LEGO's poor execution yet again; as they did with the Atari console, Foosball table, etc. They make a set that replicates a real world item but it costs 3x as much. Hard pass.
IMO, that’s one of the ugliest chess sets I’ve ever seen. Save your money and buy a decent set.
