In today’s woodworking build we’re making a White Oak and Wenge Jewelry Box. Boxes are a right of passage for woodworkers. Due to the low cost of materials, they’re phenomenal projects to practice some high level skills while the stakes are low. They make fantastic gifts and the creative possibilities are endless. I walk you through grain wrapping to make it look like one continuous board, fitting/making trays, adding felt, and getting a high quality smooth finish with grain filler, shellac, lacquer and wax. The lid design is inspired by Matt Kenney @mekwoodworks who is the reason I got into woodworking years ago. Let me know what you’d like to see next. Thanks for watching! Please like, comment and subscribe. Cheers!

  • Great book for a beginner . kzhead.infoUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ this book really starts from the beginning, as in it explains what basic tools are and how to use them. But when it gets to the art of creating joints and how and when to use them this book really starts to teach you something. At least that was my experience.

  • Jonathan, Jonathan, Jonathan! You never cease to amaze me… dude, your workmanship is over-the-top incredible! That box is absolutely gorgeous! I’m just starting to make six memory boxes for my children and my two best friends. They include a voice box and mini urn, (I have a terminal illness), so they can keep photos, letters, a share of my ashes, and I am recording messages for each one of them so they can hear my voice whenever they want to. I always try to do my best work, but you just inspired me to take it up to a whole new level. I’ve followed you for quite some time now, and always appreciate your teachings. The only thing I’m not sure about is how to wrap the thread so it never unravels, but Google is my friend, and I shall look it up, (I just love the handles). Thank you as always! - signed Tim, (a fellow woodworker, and friend you’ve never met). ☮️❤️

  • Intended as a compliment: I love the mix of woodworking knowledge and montage that makes it feel kind of like a training montage from one of the Rocky movies. You just need to add a voice-over of Devito grumbling perplexing one-liners many to inspire you to cut cleaner in the style of a fight trainer.

    • I have made a fair amount of custom humidors over the years. It's hard to compete with china but in the end people who can afford custom appreciate the quality. Fortunately most of my humidors have been gifts or for charity events so making a profit wasn't the goal.

    • I routinely make boxes for a specific purpose and sell them between 65-115$/box dependent on wood choice. If you can target an audience you can make good money on small boxes. Boxes that are built to be cute without an intended purpose are where it becomes a harder sell.

  • Great looking box, J! I’m setting up to make some jewelry boxes for my daughters for Christmas, and I got some good ideas from this video. The continuous-grain wrap by using book-matched wood looks really, really cool... I was planning on dovetail joinery, but these splined meters look so good I am going to try it for at least one box. BTW, the “trick” of closing a miter gap with your burnishing tool is awesome! Thanks for the great content, again.

Except for the milling of the wood, it is completely made with handtools. Not a single electrically powered appliance was used. I am inordinately proud of the result, even if it does still contain some mistakes and you can definitely see it was made by a novice. I want to thank you for this video and design, that inspired me for my very first project. I'd love to share a picture with you, but that isn't possible here :)
