They are a small Asian clawed otters, lives in Japan. Hana & Kotaro are hilarious and Captain Aty is Japan's greatest little adventurer. I've never seen that in my life..such a silly, smart, intelligent - something unreal. 😍

So excited to revisit MBA next month! Last time I was there was December 2019 before the pandemic start, and I fell in love with the sea otters and started to research and learn more about the history :D

I don't agree with MBA's rescuing baby pups growing them then releasing back into the wild. I've followed other aquas where there's an age limit when pups are rescued that can't be released back.
They have surrogates to teach the pups how to survive in the wild. The reason the other aquariums don’t do this is because they don’t have the program or surrogates. Van aqua have mostly northern sea otters so they would have to have their own program because a southern sea otter cannot teach a northern sea otter pup the skills they need to live in a cold environment. I believe the pups have to be at least a certain age to even qualify to have a surrogate mom, if too young they are sent to live at other aquariums. I hope that answers your questions, they have the best intentions and it is for the best for the otter pups to be in the wild if possible.
