This is a great strategy because then nobody can accuse the Dems of trying to grab power. The MAGA House members are really stupid to try to impeach another speaker. They are doing this so no new legislation gets passed. They have been losing members in their own party. They are holding up by one or two seat majority. 20 plus Republicans are not running for re-election and Mitt Romney and Mitch McConnell are retiring. The Republicans are leaving because they don't like having the extreme right wing talking over. They themselves are not far to the right. Even the Conservative Republicans are not for MAGA. They know there is nothing Conservative with MAGA.
I think the the idea is that it giv es the Dems leverage. Allows Dem,s to get some needed legislation passed.

Ryan is correct. Johnson should be required to bring forward the. bills that have bipartisan support in return for Dems saving his speakership. Negotiate something Democrats, don't just give stuff away.

When the first speaker of this session was being sought, Jeffries was nominated, but lost every time, & KMcC eventually got the gavel. I know the GoP majority is smaller now; it would certainly be interesting to see if the GoP would again close ranks against a Dem speaker, even if they had to hold their noses to do so. Unfortunately, I think that's what they'd do.

So the Democrats should empower Marjorie Taylor Greene? Mike Johnson has prevented a government shutdown, renewed FISA, and passed aid to Ukraine all without draconian demands on border security. A different speaker allied with MTG wouldn’t have even done the bare minimum like Johnson has. The next speaker after Johnson could be far worse. Democrats need to be pragmatic and choose the least bad option which in this case is Mike Johnson.

My question is, what is Johnson capable of doing as a speaker if there's another Jan 6? Does he somehow have the ability to complete the will of trump if it happens? If the Democrats remove Mike Johnson, then the most extreme right wing members will ensure the new speaker only listens to them, because the lesson from Kevin McCarthy and Mike Johnson is the extremists can always rely on the Democrats to remove any speaker who isn’t sufficiently loyal to the Freedom Caucus. While it’s uncertain whether Mike Johnson will certify the election for Biden, the new speaker after Johnson will certainly do everything in their power to silence the voice of voters and steal the election for Donald Trump. It’s best to keep Johnson if for no other reason than disenfranchising Marjorie Taylor Greene and the Freedom Caucus.

Exactly my question as well. Why are the Dems falling for this crap? LET THEM DESTROY THEMSELVES! This is why the GOP with a minority always whips on Dems who have a majority cause the GOP knows how to play to win and take NO prisoners. Dems don't have the backbone and courage to play that game.
Removing Mike Johnson would only empower Marjorie Taylor Greene. One day the House will be controlled by Republicans again and we want the Republican Speaker to make deals with the Democratic minority and trust that they will protect him from the right wing extremists in his party. The alternative is to allow the speaker to be a hostage of MTG and her ilk. In this case pragmatism is better than partisanship.

By January 6 2025 we should have a democratic majority in the house. Jefferies will be elected by the unanimous democratic party on or about January 3, 2025.

Make no mistake , Johnson's goal is the union of church and state. Union of church and state is number 11 on the list of the 12 primary things to avoid in order to retain freedom according to Urantia. The list is pretty darn good list. You can find the list if you do a word search at Urantia book online for the word dictators and click the first thing it shows. I would like to note that number #6 on that list of things to avoid is " Control by ambitious and cleaver would be dictators."

I hear Dem House Leader's pronouncement that this is a 'vote of conscience' means 'vote however you believe to be right'. There are clear points in favour and clesr points against Mike Johnson, so Dem members are absolutely free to prioritise the aspects they consider most pertinent. P.S. As long as one vote to introduce a vacate motion remains in effect, the Dems can leave him in as long as he is useful to them, and move to vacate when he isn't.

I can agree with Ryan on his points. But I think the Democrats are trying to keep the house speaker on a short leash for the time being. Because if he is ousted there is always a very high possibility that he would be replaced with a freedom caucus member who is even more extreme and won't budge on any issues.
Johnson did something right once and Americans should pick him as speaker? The few Americans left in the Republican House should vote for Jeffries as Speaker so America can move forward.
