He is not the best at a lot of those skills. People rate him the best of all time because they never saw Alfredo Di Stefano until he was past his best, or just playing for Spain when he never had his heart in it. For me Di Stefano was twice as good as Messi if you can believe it, for he had just a much skill and a whole lot more. And it was not Real Madrid who won the European Cup five times in a row it was Alfredo Stefano Di Stefano Laulhe. He lined up at centre forward wearing number nine and scored goals more regularly than most orthodox spearheads, often the top league goalscorer in Spain. But he wandered everywhere dropping back to challenge and scheme in midfield and even covered in defence and was virtually a one-man team and all in world class company. Messi can't do all that.

My younger brother has every single Messi stat and record. This kid is all he does and each time Leo reaches another milestone, he shows me. So many records he's got 11 screenshot pages of 143 records set by Messi. He's been fact checked over and over. My brother is no expert, he's just a kid. Yet he knows why Leo is the goat. I know just from watching him for the past 20 yrs. All you need to do is watch one match. Whether he scores or not, you can see how he controls everyone's passing. His dribbling is top. Most in a season, and most career dribbles.

It was a really important world cup for future reference. If he bottled it, the disrespect from the next generation would've been too much. He proved that he can play in 3 generations during his career and therefor could play in ANY generation. Something that doesn't get spoken about as much, is that Messi didn't have it easy besides the Pep, VIlanova and Enrique eras. He played with so many coaches and players that were far from Barca worthy and carried them for years and years on end. Let me present you with a list of the worst players he was supposed to carry to a Champions League. - *COACHES*: Tata Martino, Valverde, Setien, Koeman. - *PLAYERS* | Boateng, Mathieu, Douglas, Sandro Ramirez, Martin Braithwaite, Trincao, Semedo, Raphinha, Paulinho, Firpo, Alcacer, Malcom, Lenglet, Yerry Mina, Digne, Aleix Vidal, Andre Gomes, Munir El Haddadi, Bartra, Denis Suarez, etc. Now imagine most of those managers with the players above in their teams. It was always a match made in hell. Imo Barca did everything to sabotage him and when they milked him dry, they got rid of him like the players in the list above. The fact that he never got a farewell at Barca is a disgrace and should tell you they only used Messi to cover for whatever was happening in the background.

He was carrying a greatly diminished Barca on his back.He kept them in CL and even won Copa del Rey. And then they threw him out. It's an incredible story.. The minute he was out Barca was relegated. It's not fair to compare different era's. But for this generation, he is the King. With all respect to CR7. You can't campare with the guy who scores as much goals as by far best scorer, and also gives tones of assist, main dribbler (by far) in his era, and in the peak was capable to get the ball in the middle of the peach, in a very static situation, and by himself just go and score a goal destroying everebody from one of the greates football team (Real Madrid) with super starts on each position in a Championship League Play-Offs.

When Eras are to be compared. How could one say this argentina would be out of the group stage had it been 1970s or 1980s? People have learnt the game year by year. Learnt the weaknesses and it has advanced a lot since those days. Hence, these teams should be now far ahead of all those teams. Defence now use more advanced strategies that were not known those days. Hence I conclude that Messi will be now far off than Pele or Maradonna.
Messi was the GOAT even before the world cup triumph. The WC is just the icing on the cake.

People rate him the best of all time because they never saw Alfredo Di Stefano until he was past his best, or just playing for Spain when he never had his heart in it. For me Di Stefano was twice as good as Messi if you can believe it, for he had just a much skill and a whole lot more. And it was not Real Madrid who won the European Cup five times in a row it was Alfredo Stefano Di Stefano Laulhe. He lined up at centre forward wearing number nine and scored goals more regularly than most orthodox spearheads, often the top league goalscorer in Spain. But he wandered everywhere dropping back to challenge and scheme in midfield and even covered in defence and was virtually a one-man team and all in world class company. Messi can't do all that.
