As Germany intensifies its crackdown on pro-Palestinian voices, we speak with Greek economist and politician Yanis Varoufakis, one of the planned speakers at a conference in Berlin last weekend that was forcibly shut down by police. The Palestine Congress was scheduled to be held for three days, but police stormed the venue as the first panelist spoke. Germany's Interior Ministry had also banned some conference speakers from even entering the country, including Varoufakis, the Palestinian British surgeon Ghassan Abu-Sittah and the Palestinian researcher Salman Abu Sitta. "This is not about protecting Jewish lives and Jews from antisemitism. It's all about protecting the right of Israel to commit any war crime of its choice," says Varoufakis. We also speak with Varoufakis about freeing Julian Assange and his new book Technofeudalism.

    • @@juttaspeaks I am from germany and it is NOT guilt that governs germany. Our media hardly reports at all about Israeli war crimes and human rights violations, but it's not just us Germans who believe Israels propaganda. I recently searched on Google about the Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy. For 20 pages, only posts about Iran's attack on Israel were suggested, even though I was EXPLICITLY looking for the Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy in Damascus. No wonder - just look up who the two founders of Google are! And it was NOT Germans who helped intercept the missiles from Iran, it was British, French and US Americans - none of whom were involved in the Holocaust and STILL unconditionally serve Israel's interests. Germany's attitude towards Israel has nothing to do with guilt or the Holocaust, but just like the attitude of the USA, UK and France, it has economic and political reasons. Nobody wants to mess with Google or Blackrock.

It was Israel. Israel 'absolved' Germany in the name of *ALL* Jewish people (even though they were not the victims mostly) in exchange for an endless stream of money and guns, and the German NATCs got to carry on and rebuild, having simply outsourced their 'work' to the Levant.... having granted German Jews their status as part of the 'ubermenchen'--- that is, as long as they get their hands bloody and tow the party line. Otherwise....

What they should have learned is not to scapegoat a people, not to k+ll the innocent and not to follow facism. It's like they have to relearn the lessons of history with each separate group of people they intend harm upon, because their system of logic is too specific to understand how to extract a common theme and apply it to new situations.

    • As a German citizen I also find this an 6 violation of the right of free opinion. The police action to stop the congress(!) and the unbelievable banning of Yannis Varoufakis of entering Germany! You don't need to be against Isreal to find these state actions outrageous. The same has been going on with a new law basically forbidding all criticism of the government with pejorative language, however this will be interpreted (subject to legal actions but anyway disturbing). Also the second strongest opposition party is under constant surveillance of the German "constitution protection service" (Verfassungsschutz) - the political secret service. And why? Because to be anti-immigration is declared to be anti-human right, therefore must be unconstitutional. However the party is just for enforcement of border controls and valid immigration laws by the way. Did any court approve this gevernment view? No. But mainstream media does what they can to support the government view and discredit the opposition. - Now we see the same type of efforts trying to discredit any critics of Israel by our current government. In Germany the dissatisfaction with our repressive left wing government and msm is growing stronger and stronger.

  • As "hate speech" laws were spreading across Western countries over the past 30 years, libertarians warned that such laws give those in power the right not only to censor hate speech, but to define at any given moment what constitutes hate speech. They warned that it was only a matter of time before said laws would be turned on those who initially promoted them. Germany is perhaps the most advanced example of this; a few years ago, Angela Merkel tried to prosecute a comedian for making fun of her then-ally Recep Erdogan; more recently, the current government passed a law (or maybe an amendment to an existing law) making it a crime to "insult" public office holders, on the grounds that any "insult" could incite violence. So, the fact that they would persecute those opposing cooperation the state that cannot be mentioned is not at all surprising. In 1977, the ACLU, despite most of its members being Liberal democrats, defended followers of the German dictator that looked like Charlie Chaplin, who had been banned from marching in Skokie IL. Back then, it was common to support the rights of people without liking them or their views. The world needs that kind of respect for free speech today. The right to speak is more important than the feelings of those who are easily offended.
