In this video, I'll show you how you pronounce the letters of the alphabet in Belgium, so in the variation of the Dutch language called "Flemish". I will also give you some specific tips to train the correct pronunciation of certain vowels and consonants.
The alphabet seems rather basic but it's very much a necessary skill. You might wonder, why bother learning the alphabet but don't forget how handy those annoying letters might come once you have to spell out your (likely) foreign name (or write down someone else's), or when you want to see how a word that you don't understand is written so you can look it up later.

  • I could almost cry... thanks for any help you can give me a this language was my family's language and my mom's mother tongue. It got lost as my grandparents taught my mom english to go to school and never went back to flemish. I grew up with a few phrases or words that would come out now and then from my grandma or mom but otherwise this language has died with my mom's generation. I really want to learn it and restore it.

  • I'm so sad I've discovered your channel only now when you don't post anymore... wish I could ask you how to go about hearing the difference between 'w' and 'v' and 'e' and 'i'! I struggle with this immensely even though I've been learning Dutch for 2 years now and you're literally the first person who's explaining this kind of stuff so well I could maybe get it at last lol thanks for the great work you've done and I hope you'll return one day :)

    • The w sound. The trick I learned. The v position is the starting position of the w sound. But no air should come out of that starting position. Then just make a w sound

  • I have heard Y pronounced as Epsilon (or perhaps Upsilon). Is there a regional difference?

    • No it is actually a reference to the Greek Y, ypsilon. In speaking terms it can sound as ‘ij’, ‘I’,’j’ depending on the word...you should look up some words with Y in it on Google Translate and listen how it sounds. In the Netherlands they will probably not use this ypsilon reference when reciting the alphabet but in Belgium, Flanders, they still can. Some older people will even say ‘Ygrec’...ok forget it, too confusing to explain 😅

    • @Mark Xavier [ˈʔʏpsɪlɔn] for Yy belongs to German. In Dutch, Yy has always been [ɛɪ]. Yy is often considered to be the combination of i and j.

  • Ik ben Nederlander, maar ik geloof dat onderstaande op alle vormen van het standaard/officïele Nederlands van toepassing is. Vandaar dat ik ook een kleine correctie maak. De voorbeeldzin "Jij kan dat spellen" is strict gezien geen taaltechnisch correct gebruik van de vervoeging van het werkwoord 'kunnen'. Hier dient uitsluitend 'kunt' gebruikt te worden. Bij een vraagstelling zal in de formele taalvorm in vrijwel alle gevallen bij de tweede persoon het werkwoord vervoegd worden tot de tweede persoon enkelvoud ('kunt u') en in de informele taalvorm tot dezelfde vorm als de eerste persoon enkelvoud (de stam). 'Kan' wordt in het dagelijks leven wel gebruikt, maar maakt eerder deel uit van de zogenaamde spreektaal, terwijl het op educatief vlak niet goed gerekend mag worden. 'Kan is echter wel toegestaan in de eerste persoon ('ik') en de derde persoon ('hij/zij/het/men'), zowel in normale zinnen als in vraagstellingen, omdat 'kunnen' een sterk werkwoord is waarvan de vervoegingsregels iets kunnen afwijken. Er zijn in mijn verleden zo af en toe lesboeken voor Nederlands te vinden geweest die foutief gebruik maakten van de vervoeging 'kan' in verhalen voor tekstverklaringsopdrachten. Ik ben me lang niet bewust geweest van deze fout, totdat ik er met een docent van een hoger opleidingsniveau over sprak. Die vertelde mij dat bijna elke Nederlands sprekende persoon zowel 'kan' als 'kunt' gebruikt in de spreektaal, maar dat het gebruik van 'kunt' bij de tweede persoon enkelvoud in de grammatica de enige correcte vervoeging is. 'Kan' is nog wel mogelijk bij 'hij kan', 'kan hij', 'ik kan' en 'kan ik'. Ik weet niet of het standaard Nederlands dat op educatief vlak in Vlaanderen wordt onderwezen daarin toch een beetje verschillend is. Maar ik heb altijd gedacht dat die vorm van het Nederlands in zowel Nederland sls Vlaanderen dezelfde regels heeft. Uiteraard maakt het voor mensen uit het buitenland die als toeristen de taal willen leren kennen niet zo veel uit als ze 'kan' in plaats van 'kunt' gebruiken in de spreektaal. Het belangrijkste is dat ze weten waar het over gaat. Ik heb wel gemerkt dat er één duidelijk verschil is in het gebruik van de naam voor de letter Y dat ik gehoord heb in beide versies van het alfabet. Zowel Nederlanders als Vlamingen (hoewel iets minder vaak) gebruiken de benaming 'Griekse IJ', maar waar ik Nederlanders heel soms ook de naam 'ygrec' hoor gebruiken (spreek uit als 'i-grek'), hoor ik bij de Vlamingen juist veel vaker de naam 'Ypsilon' uitspreken (spreek uit als 'ipsilon'). Eerlijk gezegd vind ik de Vlaamse variant beter, aangezien dit ook exact de naam is die uit het Grieks afkomstig is. En bovendien heeft deze naam ook sterkere raakvlakken met de andere Germaanse talen, vooral met het Duits.

    • A lot of Flemish dialects drop the -n of -en when speaking, especially in normal conversation. It is alway written, however, in AN.

  • My name needs more diacritics than the both english and dutch has. Its yash in eng. In hindi is Yaśà.or jaśà or jaśa. Depends on the dielect à and a is same but à is softer e like in the. A is long à but not ā. Ś is soft sh of me role it like r its a whisling s like ş. Also v and w are same.

    • It does sound like K a lot I never noticed this and I'm Dutch😂 The thing is the first part of the g sound is not a sound is English as far as I know so I can't explain that but indeed just like the English K it does have the "a" sound at the end

  • Ik weet niet of de Vlaamse taal dezelfde regel gebruikt, maar ik heb geleerd dat de Nederlandse taal onderscheid maakt tussen 'Kan/Kun je dat spellen?' Als voorbeeld neem ik de zin: 'Kan je dat voorstellen?'. Deze vorm wordt vooral veel in de reclame gebruikt en op plaatsen waar veel mensen komen (winkelcentra, stations, borden op straat). 'Je' wordt hier gezien als 'men'. 'Je' wordt gebruikt, omdat je eigenlijk iemand persoonlijk aanspoort tot handelen. En dat dan om de zoveel keer, want iedereen loopt er langs. 'Kun je dat voorstellen?' is echt gericht op één persoon. Dat hoef ik verder niet uit te leggen, neem ik aan. :-)

    • Ok, enkele dingen want ik denk dat je het een beetje moeilijk maakt. 1) Het is de Vlaamse variant van het Nederlands en niet de Vlaamse taal. We moeten juist zijn, er zijn al teveel mythes over Vlaams vs. Nederlands. 2) Het verschil tussen "kan" en "kun" is miniem voor beginners. In het algemeen kan je zeggen dat "kan" een beetje informeler is, meer spreektaal, en vaker in Vlaanderen voorkomt. "Kun" is een beetje formeler en heb je meer in Nederland. Dit zijn algemene tendenzen en dat is niet zwart-wit. 3) Je voorbeeldzin is waarschijnlijk verkeerd. Ik denk dat het is "Kan / kun je je dat voorstellen?", betekent "Can you imagine that?". "Kan / kun je dat voorstellen?" betekent "Can you introduce that." zich voorstellen = to imagine / voorstellen = to introduce 4) Het pronomen "je" gebruiken we vaak voor algemene instructies, regels, principes, etc. Het is geen exact synoniem van "men", soms is er overlap tussen de twee maar het is toch meestal anders. "men" is formeel en gebruik je meestal in artikels en studies voor tendenzen, algemene, courante ideeën met frasen zoals "Men denkt / zegt / gelooft / wil / vindt / hoopt / ... " (Voorbeeld: "Men zegt dat de coronacrisis een positieve impact op het milieu heeft, maar dat is waarschijnlijk niet correct.") Ik hoop dat het helpt.

    • Ter conclusie dus: er is geen verschil in betekenis tussen "Kun je je dat voorstellen?" of "Kan je je dat voorstellen?". De eerste zin gebruik je waarschijnlijk meer in Nederland en teksten of andere officiëlere situaties, de tweede zin gebruik je meer in Vlaanderen en als spreektaal. De verschillen tussen de twee zijn heel erg miniem.
