Did you watch the review? The criticism wasn't the game being R-Rated or something, it was that it was too easy and simplistic. Which is a fair point. Even "kid games" like Mario Oddyesy have a decent challenge or some deep mechanics to enjoy. Context matters
Fraser Souris the difference is Mario isn’t meant exclusively for children, it’s a character that appeals to literally everyone. Spongebob only really appeals to children

StalkerRapture it is a remake. It is supposed different down to sound, gameplay, music, and much more. Like N Sane trilogy or reignited. Rehydrated uses the same audio, and sounds. And the controls, although slightly different, it is the same thing. While the others games has different controls, audio, and new lines. Everything should’ve been upgraded. Only one things which is graphics. They should’ve just port it to PS4 with 1080p 60fps since the same bugs of the original is still present. So no that’s not the point.

I don’t like this review. It is almost like criticizing Banjo-Kazooie due to being way too kid friendly. This game is supposed to be faithful to the original. What do you expect it to be: Grand Theft SpongeBob Edit: Thank you all so much for the likes since I really didn’t expect to get this many. But I had played SpongeBob BFBB Rehydrated on my switch and so far; I’m like half way done through the game and I actually have a fun time with this game. There can be some challenges in the game but for the person who grew up playing the original on the PS2, this game is like a one big nostalgic memory lane; from the music to the levels. But if I have to get some criticism, it might be the gameplay. Not that it is bad, it plays fine; but since I’m playing on the switch, it can have some problems. The game will kind of lag in some areas; most notably the hub world and the game has pretty bad loading times. But to me, they don’t really severely hurt the gameplay, it just happens from time to time and I am starting to get used to it. Also, I did not try the multiplayer mode yet, but I will try to play it when I get the chance. So in conclusion, SpongeBob BFBB Rehydrated is a fun game to relieve your childhood where it can have some problems here and there, but with the bright visuals and faithfulness to the original game still makes it a lot of fun for people big and small. As for my recommendation, I catered this to more of the SpongeBob fans like me and those who love the original game. Even those who had not played the original game would have fun with this all the same. As for my rating, I’ll give this a 8/10 as a gamer and a SpongeBob fan. Thank you Purple Lamp to give us the game worth waiting for Edit 2: I’ve just 100% the game. It was really fun

Oof. Sounds like someone didn't know what he was getting into. The Community surrounding this game wanted a faithful remake as close as possible to the original. THQ Nordic delivered. That is obviously not what our reviewer was expecting, or even wanted.
And a faithful remake carried the flaws of the original. Why not improve on those?
@@FraserSouris You're taking the assumption that we all agree they are flaws, for example switching characters via a button would remove a element of the puzzle solving, yes it's easier and more desired by today's instant gratification market but many actually like the challenge of knowing a character puzzle is in one location, a box to transport you across the scene is in another and a bus stop is in another and having to come up with the most time-friendly way to complete the puzzle (which usually isn't hard but can be fun for people who don't just want everything handed to them) I agree on some things like Clancy Brown not being in it is distracting, I'd have rather they got someone better at the voice like Brock Baker if he still wasn't going to be in it for whatever reason. But hardly game ruining, same with the odd bugs and loading screen. A score in the realm of 8.5 is way more fair than a 5.
@@DrMattPhillips There's a difference between wanting instant gratification and not wanting your time wasted by filler. Keep in mind the original character swapping mechanic was implemented mostly because Heavy Iron had some technical issues with loading. You can make swapping more seamless while still keeping and even adding more puzzles and challenges on modern hardware. And I'd argue its score is closer to a 5 than an 8.5 because substantially better platformers exist and BFBB doesn't do anything too remarkable compared to them, even back in 2003. Mario Sunshine had all of Mario's moves to make something of a platforming sandbox in addition to actually challenging platforming challenges that tested the player's skill and knowledge, not time. Jak and Daxter had a much better seamless open world with evolving gimmicks. Sly had a focus on Stealth and story. Compared to these, BFBB was always on the shallow side so would be undeserving of an 8.5 The only thing that made BFBB unique to play was speedrunning it. And according to Shift, Rehyrdated removes many of the cool skips and starts of the original.

Spongebob is kid friendly. This is quite possibly the most genius review I've ever seen. The way he articulates the obvious points, and how he complains about the games reasonable load times. This review is a gold mine, a plethora of incredible points. 10/10

This reminds of Dunkey's game critics review, where he talks about how they're so used to playing new triple a games that they can't comprehend how to review a remaster or remake of anything past 2010.

legorunnerkid agreed that’s the problem with these big channels you don’t know what the reviewer likes or dislikes. but with channels that are run by one person you can easily tell their personality and preferences.
Considering the Spyro and crash remakes were reviewed very well I don't think that's really an argument

Killing off main characters at the start is the new standard for masterpieces, bonus points if before that they behave disproportionally dumb compared to previous games.
J L agreed, it also helps the story if you control the villain for half the game to understand where there coming from, those are the signs of a true masterpiece.

OBJECTION: Apparently you didn’t play the game long enough. You would have played until you hit in Spongebob’s Dream where the entire level is challenging. If you want to do a review right, how about actually complete the game instead of half-assing it until you hit into a third level and calling it quits. Do your job, IGN. From what he said all he would need to do is turn off his volume and have a quick swap feature.
It does mention one valid flaw...having to go to specific spots to switch characters is done only to increase gameplay time, and this exact feature was heavily criticized for Donkey Country 64...The devs could have easily avoided that and I hope they find a way to patch it. Other than that, I agree that IGN was unreasonably harsh, especially considering their latest reviews...

Game is great. Though in my opinion the multi-player is boring.
@@drakep.5857 the multiplayer is for the new generation of kids. The story is for the old gen to relive childhood memories and pass them on to their future gen.
Multiplayer is just a horde of waves, which is what a ton of other multiplayers like Zombies have too. These reviewers are absolutely trash.

The first game I ever played was Battle for Bikini Bottom on the PS2, when I reached Jellyfish fields in Rehydrated I nearly cried as all the memories came flooding back. I’m absolutely glad they didn’t change a thing because it made people like me enjoy the game exponentially more
