Germany needs an economic turnaround in order to secure its geopolitical position, German Finance Minister and head of the Free Democrats FDP Christian Lindner said on Saturday.
The German economy was the weakest among its large euro zone peers last year, as high energy costs, feeble global orders and record high interest rates took their toll.
In its World Economic Outlook, the International Monetary Fund has cut its forecasts for German GDP by 0.3 percentage points for both years, expecting 0.2% growth this year and 1.3% in 2025.
These forecasts are below the estimates of 0.8% for 2024 and 1.5% for 2025 for the euro zone.
Lindner said Germany's economic weakness has consequences for security and geopolitics.
On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russian GDP growth for the first two months of the year had been better than the authorities had expected.
Putin that Russian GDP could grow more than 3% in 2024 given current trends in the economy.
Putin made the remarks when he opened a meeting with the government on economic issues on Saturday.
The Russian Economic Development Ministry has estimated Russian GDP growth for January-February 2024 at 6.0%.
It said GDP grew 7.7% year-on-year in February after rising 4.6% in January.
The ministry has just raised its forecast for Russian economic growth in 2024 to 2.8% earlier this week from September's estimate of 2.3%.
The International Monetary Fund recently raised its estimate of Russian economic growth in 2024 to 3.2% from the 2.6% it had forecast in January.

  • This is what betrayal does. It will cause the pain and suffering on the affected initially while those inflict continue to enjoy. But over the course of time, the affected will grow at a pace and more than the one who inflicted. God speed Russia
