As a hybrid woodworker, storing and protecting my handtools in a way that makes them easily accessible is very important. My Dutch Tool Chest is basically an entire handtool woodshop in a box. In it is every single tool I need to turn a tree into a piece of fine furniture. It is handy to take my entire handtool workshop with me when I teach classes and build in my friends' shops. Building a dutch tool chest is one of the most requested projects my channel has had because folks always see me using it in my videos. I built my first dutch tool chest after reading about the project in a piece written by Christopher Schwarz. You can read what he's written on the topic on the Lost Art Press blog and he also has a video about building a dutch toolchest available through Lie-Nielsen Toolworks. Building a Dutch Toolchest is a great weekend project utilizing fairly inexpensive materials which will allow you to practice your dovetails (don't worry, it's painted!), dado grooves, tongue and groove joints, and breadboard ends.

  • CAPITALS DUE TO LOSING SIGHT AND REDUCED COGNITIVE ABILITIES. I’M A RETIRED CARPENTER IN THE UK. THOUGH OUR TOOL BOXES ARE DIFFERENT I WOULD LIKE TO OWN A DUTCH ONE. WHEN I STARTED AS AN APPRENTICE 51 YEARS AGO A WHEEL BRACE WAS THE CORDLESS DRILL OF THE DAY. AS SLOT SCREWS WERE ONLY AVAILABLE A FLAT BLADE SCREWDRIVER BIT WAS AVAILABLE TO USE WITH THE WHEEL BRACE. CORDLESS SREWDRIVER OF THE DAY WAS A STANLEY YANKY. A STUNNING TOOL. THANK YOU FOR A GREAT TUTORIAL. MICHAEL

  • Oops accidentally pushed send. I like you also learnt from my grandfather, he only used hand tools. I have been doing my own wood working for almost 60 years. I try to encourage other females to explore and enjoy wood working. I am an Aussie grandmother. I love your videos and I love using hand tools (mostly my grandfathers tools). I also have 3 powered lathes from 9 foot between centres to a pen lathe. I have enjoyed wood working all my life so it is very interesting for me to watch your videos. I have 4 children and 10 grand children from 4 to 20 years old. My eldest daughter and youngest son are very interested in wood working but my grand children aren't interested yet. Well done Anna. Ashleigh 💖

  • Bless your heart for posting a video where you're actually making something. I feel that after watching 175,000,000 videos on how to make a cross cut sled or a small table saw made from nasty old plywood and a powerdrill. I got it! I love this project and I can see where it can be a great addition to my shop. So thanks is for sharing this and have a wonderful day.

    • Harm Booij was referring to lots of english expressions like "Dutch courage", "Going dutch", "Dutch oven", etc --- "Dutch toolchest" being the odd positive one out.

      @SenselessUsername@SenselessUsername4 жыл бұрын
    • @@SenselessUsername I can't think of anything particularly bad about a Dutch oven or going Dutch: I use the first quite a lot, and have quite a few people I routinely "go Dutch" with when going out to dinner! I hadn't heard Dutch courage before, though. And the Dutch toolchest is definitely a personal favorite!

      @andymckenzie8031@andymckenzie80314 жыл бұрын
    • @@SenselessUsername I'm going to make the claim that "going Dutch" is also a positive one. It's an early slang term that nods toward egalitarianism, and came from the recent positive development of women being allowed to work and have their own sources of income. Not like we're anywhere near done with that process yet since the pay gap is still like $0.82 for women per $1 for men, but still.

  • with the sloped top how do you cover the top of this with junk so you can't open it without all the junk falling off? oh, hang on... :) There aren't as many "traditional" toolbox vids on youtube as there should be, so glad to see this one. Look into Japanese toolboxes if you feel the need, they lend themselves well to cut nails (or pallet nails and wood which is what I usually make them out of) and are very easy to make.

  • Love this build. I've been looking to buy a hand drill(hand powered). There are many brands and it's hard to go by the reviews they give. I have a brace bit drill that belonged to my grandfather, but I don't have the little egg-beater type that you were using in the video. Can you tell me what is a good brand/model of hand drill?

  • This is a great video, thank you for sharing it! Where can we get the plans so we can build one too?

    @shaungarbry88@shaungarbry883 жыл бұрын
    • You don’t really need plans. Tool boxes/chests are usually sized from your tools, so the length should accommodate your longest tools. Height needs to accommodate the tallest tools wherever you plan to put it. This is a pretty good video for instruction. Christopher Schwarz had a good article in Popular Woodworking. He also did one with Roy Underhill on the Woodwrights Shop.

  • Hi Anne! I've been looking forward to building one of these ever since I saw Christopher Schwarz's presentation on the Woodright's Shop. I'm getting ready to start my own tool chest and I was just curious--it looks like you're building yours out of poplar. Would there be any issues with building it out of pine? I haven't had much luck with poplar in the past, it seems to splinter on me. Great video as always, thank you!

  • Great video Anne! Out of interest, what do you use for spacers in the tongue and groove backing? I assume it needs to be something with some give?

  • Anne, for the pilot holes, do you just drill through the first board for the pilot holes for the cut nails?

    @joeleonetti8976@joeleonetti89764 жыл бұрын
    • Both, you want to drill down to the depth of 3/4 the length of the nail
