How to Diagnose a Bad Steering Angle Sensor
In this video I'll go over how a steering angle sensor works, how to diagnose a bad steering angle sensor, how to initialize steering angle sensor on Mercedes ML Series and how to use a scanner capable of reading live data or a multimeter to help narrow down the problem area. A bad steering angle sensor, bad wiring, poor connections, bad alignment, poor connections and a bad Traction / ESP Control module can all be the culprit but I'll show you how to check each one and find the right culprit.

FINGERS and thumbs is the best diagnostic instrument demoing principles and procedures . . .Testing in with between DMM and scanner is an elite talent!
Dropped the like for the thumbnail. How long have you waited to use that?
Haha
haha that is not my only thumbnail that looks like that :)
Awesome diagnostic, similar common problem with 3rd generation Silverado trucks.
yes, thanks for the comment Marco.
I've had this extremely rare problem before. It was quite a headache to figure out and had to take it to our areas most specialized mechanic! !
I appreciate all the effort you put into making these. I learn a lot everytime thank you!
When the thumbnail tells you it's gonna be a good one
I've looked and looked for ways to fix the paint and my steering and came across one of ur videos and am still watching because finally you gave me answers that my dumb ass needed. Then this video had my laughing my ass off so will subscribe and post elsewhere. Thank you thank you thank you.
Wow, fantastic video. Great explanation with the wiring diagram aswell. This is the depth of explanation I have been looking for 👍
Glad you are back!
I like what you do keep up the good work
Hey, thank for you videos! I have 2001 E55 (W210) on my AUTEL it gave me the C1140 (sas) and I checked the Live Data (steering angle was at -0.0). Then I have replaced the sas with new one, the lights on the dash are there and Live Data still shows -0.0 (even when turning the wheel) I have only this error for ESP module. Q1: do you know where to look i to? Q2: where I can find the witing diagram for my car? Please help me 🙏
Great video. Would love to see someone diagnose in detail a "START ERROR" on the W163
Start error is usually when the chip inside the key fob is a bit loose you have to open it up and get it to seat good
About 95 percent of the time it’s the key fob chip. Don’t lose that. Some people will permanently glue that chip inside the steering wheel very close to the key ring sensor
Do you need to check the new sensor calibration? This for a VOLVO XC90. Very good video, learned a lot. Watching your Yaw Sensor video next. Will subscribe👍👍👍

2:14 👉👌😂💕🤦♂️ too funny. Great video for all kinds of diagnosing problems 👍
glad you liked it.
Thanks save me fortune.
Thanx alot and Will u Plz name of prog. Of wiring and how can I get its source and make future tutorials on how can use or navigate the program and what if we try measuring the signal via Hz multimeter ??
You should get an oscilloscope to see the digital signal coming from the sensor. You might not know if it's correct, but you could compare it to the new one to show the difference.
Thats one way if you don't have a scanner with live data.
The pico-scope is more expensive than the scan tool
I need videos for my 94 sn95 body that had a 2004 boss engine and Tran in it. Every part for the car has been for the 2004 year though.
I had to replace my clockspring. LIght is still on so performed the test above. When I have the wheels pointing straight forward and the steering wheel straight ahead I"m reading 360 degrees. I"m assuming somehow I installed it incorrectly..though it seems pretty straitforward
Hi, when I check my steering wheel angle sensor through a scan tool, it always shows 0, regardless of whether I'm turning the wheel or not. What can that mean? Does my sensor need calibration, or is it faulty?
Hi there, you might be able to help me here. I have a MERCEDES-BENZ ML-Class (W164) ML 320 CDI 3.0 4-matic 224 hp Diesel - 2008. Sometimes (not always) I get a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark on panel, then the self-driving, stability controls / ESP, and the rear camera stop working. I tried to change the sensor piece, but could not find anywhere in my country. It does work most of the time, but sometimes not. So Im wondering if you could shed some light here please :) Appreciated in advance 🙏
Thank you for your videos, they've been helpful. ✨🙏✨
np, glad you found it useful.
Sorry 2004 was put into the sn95 mustang body. I got it after the fact.
Is there a way to re calibrate a power steering torque sensor on a 06 chevy malibu without having to take it to the dealer?
How can I do this procedure on a 2014 Honda accord 2.4 L
Love your videos thank you 2:14 😂😂
I have a cadillac with the a invalid data resived from angle sensor code but also the steering wheel is off center wonder if an alignment first my first the issue
2:05 Steering angle sensor or YT sensor?
@ratches And Wrenches? I scanned my steering angle sensor and the value is -500 +/- but alignment is done wheels and steering is straight, what should I do with this value??
Hola you are funny
Can you show us how to do the fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator on this car?
Hi My bmw 1 series steering angle plausibility error code disappears with steering angle sensor calibration . But After driven few kilometers, again pop up same error code. Do you know the reason for that? Thanks
I have a 2004 ML350. I had to Replace ECM, AAM, BCM and Steering column, Key Module and key with used parts. It started but the ESp/ BAS, SRS are still on after I turned S Wheel both ways and I straighten S Wheel as best I can. QUESTION: Do I have to remove whole steering column to do straightening of Steering wheel if I am not sure whether I put It back on in the same position at the knuckle? (The lower part of steering column may not be where it was, Is that a problem?)
I think i have a problem with my audi a4 b8 2009 sedan steering wheel sensor, please give me some advice. If iam driving and steer to the right my car goes completely in alarm. esp, parking brake light, Etc. Everything thats possible. And my steering wheel goes to the left (25 degrees) but my wheels stay straight i can drive but its really annoying offcoure. Brought it to the audi dealer allready but they couldnt find the problem I personally think that this steering wheel sensor is bad. At this time my alarms are always on, just by starting the car. Could it be that my sensor is now completely broken by wear? The car has just over 200.000 kilometers now and this problem is occuring like 3 months now. You have some advice? Iam clueless:(
Thank you so much
Amazing !
I scanned my steering angle sensor and the value is -500 +/- but alignment is done wheels and steering is straight, what should I do with this value??
I would like to see the shock absorber works, using your hands....
😂😂😂
