"I Choose Me” is a documentary into the lives of adolescents in Suriname’s Amazon. The epic story of 4 indigenous adolescents that give testimony as to what their life is like and the choices they have made for survival, protection and reaching their full potential. The documentary also displays their living conditions and related issues ranging from environmental hazards to the lack of education opportunities. From shots taken themselves in Suriname’s beautifully conserved Amazon, to shots within the goldmines of Suriname’s interior, ‘I Choose Me’ brings you through the emotional journey of these adolescents, their fears, hopes, dreams, thoughts and choices, to better their own lives within their possibilities.

  • I like how Suriname was pronounced the Dutch way instead of the English way, even tho the narrator speaks English.

  • I've lived there for a long time, and at first thought the same as a lot of you: WHY destroy nature, just for a piece of gold? But later on, after traveling and living with the indigenous, I came to realize that poverty really pushes people in a position where it can be hard to resist the gold. I have many friends who tried and tried to get an education, but failed because nobody could sponsor them. And from that place, it's hard to get a job. Judging these people isn't the way, supporting them in finding another way is.

Most people like to go there in vacations. The only thing Suriname cannot give is proper education. In these 10 years Suriname has destroyed itself with the debt taken by the government.

I am kind of sad Venezuelans don't have so much interaction with the rest of the Guyanas, it is really important to say this because without the language barrier we definitely are very similar. • So, this guy, and others, is polluting everyone's water and food supply, can't even take care of himself and is planning to knock up his girlfriend? What , so he can then abandon the both of them? No, don't have kids. Let the task of having children be left to people who can afford it please. I know it is a tough pill to swallow, , but it is a sign of respect to the unborn human to not bring it in such a bad situation.

  • excellent documentary. it conveys in very simple terms what the challenges, opportunities and stakes are in suriname. It's all about a fucked up incentive structure that they and all of us in all countries have. It's easy to criticize the kid mining for gold with mercury but like he says, if I don't do this, I starve. So what then?

    • I've lived there for a long time, and thought the same as you: how stupid can people be? But later on I came to realize that poverty really pushes people in a position where it can be hard to resist the gold. I have many friends who tried and tried to get a education, but failed because nobody could sponsor them. And from that place, it's hard to get a job. Judging these people isnt the way, supporting them in finding another way is.

After 30 years I could not regonized the place I lived the under the people chose as President is felling the country and the people most of them are not using the fertile soil to grow vegetable . It is a pity . Wen I lived there I never went to the marked I had 8 sorts of vegetables growing and a lot of fruits we went only for fish meet milk and bread to the shops . But now nearly no one in the city is using thre living space near the house to plant vegetable . Some streets , but when it rains all of them are like rivers the water is not flowing. thanks to the president a murder who is killing the country and keeping most of the people poor .
