Hey, how ya doin’? I hope you’re doing well. This is the Insanity of Daredevil (2003), or rather, The Insane Story of Daredevil (2003). Making this video on Mark Steven Johnson and his Daredevil Director’s Cut was a joy for me, for HiTop Films. What is the correct way to title this movie? Ben Affleck’s Daredevil? Daredevil 2003? How do people refer to it? No idea. Seriously, though, this felt a return to form in a lot of ways. I love talking about the Behind The Scenes of my childhood favorites. Maybe I should only create Daredevil Video Essays. That would be fun. Anyways, I love so much of this movie and what they tried to do with Matt Murdock. Enjoy this crazy deep dive into the Deleted Scenes, the Behind the Scenes, all the scenes. I’m exhausted, HiTop must rest.
Much love to you all.

    • HiTop Never Disappoints 🗿 Isn't it ironic that in the history of the superhero genre Ben Affleck portrayed both Batman and Daredevil (the two important pillars who taught Thorfinn that killing is bad lmao), just to make them smash peoples so astonishing 🙂. Ohh by the way I would highly recommend you to watch the following anime that will blow your mind:- 1. Vinland Saga (peak storytelling, peak character development, just wow and I've No Enemies) 2. Dragon Ball (Itterasshai Toriyama, don't watch GT and skip the fillers of each series) 3. Bleach (people who are jumping on JJK now must watch which inspires it and most of the new gen shonen) 4. Naoki Urasawa's Monster (if you think anime couldn't be serious then watch it, it will change your perception) 5. Heavenly Delusion 6. 20th Century Boys (Read the Manga) 7. Homunculus (No Anime so Read the Manga)

    • PLEASE, you, and EVERYONE, if you haven't already, embrace the One True Only God YHWH Jehovah, Only One Jesus Christ His Only Begotten Son and Lord and Savior of our souls and the Only One Holy Spirit. God is good. God is love. Jesus is Lord. Jesus IS coming. Your soul depends on it! I have seen God act in my life. He saved my soul, changed my heart, changed my mind, helped people through me, took care of people in my life, people I hurt before I found God. God is the only reason I was able to reconcile with my dad before he died. God worked through Jesus Christ to save our souls. Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins. Believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, and that God raised Him from the dead, repent of your sins, accept God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit into your heart and you will be saved. Be baptized in The Holy Spirit, and if He wills, water as well. For God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son Jesus Christ, that all who believe on Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Jesus Christ is The Way, The Truth and The Life. No one comes to the Father Jehovah God but through Him. Not long after I got saved I prayed to God for help understanding the Holy Bible, and that same day someone knocked on my door asking me if I wanted to understand the Bible. The Holy Bible says, "love thy enemy", "turn the other cheek", "If your enemy is hungry, feed him", "if he is thirsty, give him a drink", "pray for those who persecute you", "do not repay evil for evil". God tells us through The Holy Bible, "Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body." Similar with gayness. LORD willing, all humans may commit sexual immorality (gay, straight) and sin, and that's wrong, all humans sin, as The Holy Bible says, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus." The Holy Bible also says, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

  • One of my favorite Directors, George Lucas said it best that "It's not about how well you can make a movie, it's about how well can you do it under the circumstances because there is always circumstances. And you can't use that as an excuse, you can't put a title card talking about all the problems... you have to show them the movie." And seeing that every single problem on set, everything that could go wrong did go wrong, still making a cohesive and almost faithful tale is truly inspiring, even if the movie is less than stellar.

There's multiple times during that commentary that Mark is talking about the differences between the Theatrical & Director's Cut when Avi will interrupt and say "Yes, that was a writing problem". That was when I first realized that I wanted Avi Arad far far away from any superhero character I was invested in.

Watching the director's cut gives me similar vibes to how it will be if we ever get to see a true director's cut for The Crow: City of Angels (both similarly had bittersweet endings and comic adaptations which showcased both films as the directors intended them to be released before the studios cut them both to near incomprehensible hell).

I had recognized the character, because I owned the 90s Spider-Man vs Daredevil crossover vhs tape. It was a peak moment for me, because I was so into Daredevil and wanted to know more about the character. Hell, I really wanted to see a solo project of this guy and there it was. Glowing with a steam of gold for me to buy. I offered my aunt to buy it for me. So she does, and I watched it over and over and over again and would not get sick of the movie. I was around 7 or 8. Then, when I heard there was a Director’s Cut, at 15, I put it on my tv and did not realize the importance of everything they swapped and removed from the theatrical version. The camp was campin’ and I loved it so much. Everything felt so comic booky to me and it was my introduction to Evanescence, Seether, and Fuel 🔥🙌🏼 Won’t Back Down is forever in my head and I got the movie to thank for that 👏🏼 Daredevil is an importance to my childhood. Without that movie, I probably wouldn’t have been drawn to watch the Netflix series. Who the heck knows, but I love the movie so much. Thanks for making this video, Alex 😎

  • The DVD “Making Of” featurette you pulled most of your footage from has always been one of my favorite relics of the 2000s DVD boom - when these Making Of featurettes were all 30 minutes or longer, showed the intricacies of development, people stressed out on-set and in post-production, talking frankly about the struggles of making the movie, warts and all. Some time around the early 2010s, literally *every* BTS featurette became a glossy promo for the movie, plastered with smiles and slogans and slick editing instead of a genuine peek behind the curtain. The DAREDEVIL one is awesome, as is the THE PHANTOM MENACE one. SUPERMAN RETURNS has a 3+ hour Making Of documentary on its second disc, which was so interesting it makes owning that DVD worth it. • I think it’s more embarrassed of this movie. The Netflix show to me is true to the spirit of the source material without slavish, fan-service splash-page homages. “Because it’s fucking cool” is the sort of approach that made the Snyderverse such a shit show. No matter which cut you watch, you can’t get around the miscasting of the title character or Elektra or the impulse to cram all the things into one movie. More violence, a Coolio storyline, or letting Favreau riff like he’s trying out new material at a comedy club are not the key to making this a better movie. And most of S1 of the Netflix show did just fine with a black costume.

  • This movie introduced me to Daredevil. Yes, it has some problems (like Matt and Elektra's weak love story, dated CGI and goofy fight scenes), but I don't care. Actors were great, the humor was great, the music was AWESOME, and I really like Matt's radar sense in this version. Of course, the story is far from perfect, but the "I'm not a bad guy" arc was interesting. Affleck did a great job here and had some really good scenes (like Matt's conversation with the priest in the director's cut and the funeral scene). So... Still rewatch this movie sometimes =)

  • You never disappoint Alex. Grew up the same time, watched this DD and Marks Ghostrider, spiderman. I didn’t have any comic shops close to me all I had as a broke kid was the cartoon channel and if I was lucky enough to find a super movie I’d always give it a watch. This movie is very underrated. I recently rewatched it a few months ago with a friend who is new to this genre. We sat down and took it for what it is and everytime I hear that guardian angel line with Ben’s voice I get goosebumps even now as I type this comment. Thank you Alex for being the voice for me and many others out there, I like to think Mark would love this video. Btw I loved your line “the scars under the horns” I can feel your passion & care as you said it. All the love and support Alex. “Go git’em Matt!” - Ben U.

  • This movie and Spider Man TAS was how I got into the character and I've loved him ever since. Definitely as I got older I grew to love Daredevil more than spider man even owning more Daredevil comics than Spidey himself still got love for him, but good old horn head is just hits a core with me. He's right behind Nightcrawler as my favorite marvel characters. The director cut is the only way to watch this movie and u clearly see the love for this character in it. Awesome video my guy!!

  • Listening to the way you talked about this movie really hit me hard. I honestly loved it too when it came out - it really was so cool when it came out. It has kind of become cool to look down on it as uncool or too camp, and yeah there is definitely some of that pre-Nolan campness to it that can feel a bit cringe now, but it is also genuinely a solid movie. Gotta go figure out where I can stream it in my country now haha. Great video as always!

  • I was underwhelmed when I first saw this film. I grew to love it. I am a huge Daredevil fan and I have every Daredevil comic from #1 from 1964 until now. Going from his childhood origin all the way to the death of Elektra in one two hour movie way way too much. A few different choices and maybe they could have had a franchise. RIP Michael Clarke Duncan. I loved his kingpin.

  • Having seen both versions, I can safely say this movie is just okay. Instead of listing many negative aspects, which I could do, I will say that Ben and Jon were great in this movie and had really strong chemistry. I liked the noir based cinematography, and attention to detail with his blind characteristics, including his sonar vision. Also, its better than its spin-off, "Elektra" from 2005.
