    • @I J Andy Serkis' performance as Gollum helped popularise performance capture, showing the world what it can do and how lifelike it can be. That doesn't mean that he's the first, or that there aren't other people who deserve credit, but Andy's contribution to motion capture cannot be overstated.

    • I think you're placing too much importance on academy awards. They mean very little in terms of artistic merits and are mostly politically driven. That said, the LOTR trilogy deserved every award it got.

  • I always wonder what Tolkien would have thought of his performance of Gollum. I Imagine he would have been blown away that someone could actually bring this character to life in such a vibrant way.

    • I don't want spread things on hearsay, but the few I have known that observed him in person said he can be a really difficult person. I certainly hope that's not true, or at least not more true than any big name actor, but it is odd that a few people have mentioned that to me.

    • Ages ago, before Lord of the Rings as a struggling actor, he was my friend's flatmate in London. My friend told me he was really nice and fun guy, and even back then he would do voices including the one that eventually became Gollum's.

    • I just started listening to them a few days ago, on the Fellowship, they just got to Rivendell. Remember reading up to halfway through two towers about ten years, I'm surprised how much is different already. But it makes sense, I don't think most fans would want a 6 or 7 hr movie, although I could be wrong.

  • You rarely see his face, but if you notice, studios are quite proud to make sure you know Serkis is in their movie. It's almost like they point& say "See? We got Andy Serkis! And I admit, I've gone to a few movies just because he's in them.

  • The best part of the Mount Doom scene Andy Serkis did at the very beginning of the shoot was that they did an early rehearsal it at Peter Jackson's house. Andy crawled up and down Peter's stairs. There's footage of it in the bonus features for the films. XD

    • @@joshuawhite6877 Planet of the Apes is one of the few modern franchises that actually told a cohesive, thought out story, with real consequences for actions and decisions. It belongs in the same category as LotR, Harry Potter, and Nolan's Batman trilogy, for that reason alone. On top of that, they're some of the most visually and emotionally engaging mainstream movies I've watched in years, carried of course by Serkis' Caesar. I usually don't find big Hollywood productions to be anything more than mediocre, because they insist on cutting out any substance, in favor of mass market appeal. Planet of the Apes managed to appeal to the common movie viewer while still having substance and depth. Even with the succes it had, I'd still say it's criminally under rated, since no one watched and though "hey, _I_ could make a blockbuster with wide appeal _and_ artistic value!"

  • I was first introduced to this man in Age of Ultron and then in Black Panther, so I googled him because I was amazed at this Afrikaans man in Holywood.. Imagine my surprise when I found out that not only is he not South African (that is how good his accent was) but he has been in a lot of my favourite movies, playing my favourite characters.. What a gem!!

  • Definitely Andy brought Gollum to life and his performance was a masterpiece. It's a difficult role and he created an epic character that'll remain there forever. I always see Gollum when I see him. A true superstar. Definitely love his voice and he is 3rd on the all time best vocal artist after Mark Hamill & Kevin Conroy.
