My complete CB radio base station set up!

Here it is, the entire set up including the antenna and all of my equipment. A lot of guys out there who get down on channel 6 (the Superbowl) are running 5,000, 10,000 and even up to 75,000 or more watts! That's not me and will never be. My little 2,000 watts is plenty to do what I need it to do! As it is, my power supply already requires 240 volts to operate. I know a lot of guys won't believe me, but I'm done! This is it and I'm very happy with it. Thanks for watching! FORD MAN 302 NORTHERN NEVADA.

All I’m looking for is about 550/600 clean PEP and I’ll be more than smiling . Once again ,, great attention to detail and a beautiful setup .

  • Was that RMS or PEP watts that you were showing on your meter when you keyed up?

    @vhf2582@vhf25822 жыл бұрын
  • Your watt meter is working correct. The 2SC2879 transistors are rated for total power dissipation of the transistor, says they’ll put out 250 watts, under totally ideal circumstances. You cannot get that out of them. More realistically you will get 120 watts output, per transistor. That’s it. No matter what you do, you can’t invent more power. Running higher voltages will of course give you more power output PEP, peak. It’s a fixed gain, 13 to 15.2db bipolar transistor. 13 nominal. Regardless of how well you match a set of them, no matter what other logic you run behind it, and no matter how efficient your 4:1 transformers perform, you can’t violate the law of physics. So, 2 driving 8, doesn’t give you the effective output of 10... it simply gives you the output of 8, but requires higher input power to drive the base Again, you’re likely getting a maximum of 1200 watts PEP, maybe a bit more. I think the 1600 PEP is your very peak envelope. That’s about it. I’ve use to love big transistor boxes. I still run them in my mobile. But the minute you step into the tube world and realize what types of real power you achieve out of big ceramics, you realize that the pill boxes are fun, but still kind of a toy. Yes, I’m an RF engineer and a lifelong ham, but quite well known in the industry. To achieve big big power, you need tubes. Best sounding station I ever had, was a Galaxy Saturn turbo, that I modified to sound huge. Ran an astatic night eagle. Clipped and fine tuned my radio beyond belief. Disconnected the small 2 transistor amp do the radio was essentially running barefoot, 18-20 watts. Dead key was very low. Approx 300 mw but could of course I could run it much higher. Ran that barefoot radio, into a TNT Mod V plus, so I’d still dead key around 4 watts but swing up around 150-200 as I recall. When I would manually key my 3cx3000a7 tube amp, it was in transmit mode full time. No minimum power input to trigger relays, it was just talking. I could adjust my dead key through the modulator or the radio itself. End result, was a dead key of around 50-70 watts, and would swing upwards of 6000-7000 watts RMS. Yes. Rms not pep. If I didn’t tune it properly it would sound very dirty. If the receivers far off couldn’t lock to my carrier or receive my smaller carrier, I’d almost sound gravelly. I’d always turn the carrier up a bit more, so I would dead key around 200-250 watts. Audio would clean up excellent at that point. I was in the process of building a 2cx15000a7 amplifier when some major personal issues came up and I decided to put the hobby behind me and focus on life for a while. It’s hard to have the life of a CBer and a ham radio operator, but also be a professional in a high demand industry. I accomplished both quite well but sadly had to get out of the hobby for a while to succeed. Radios suck up a tremendous amount of time. Yes, I know personally some of the bigger names around the bowl for years. Some are attorneys, singers and stars. I’ve known quite a few of them personally as well as professionally throughout my life. Radio brings us all together. PS: if anyone home brews any amps, please be extremely careful. Lost a couple of friends when they decided not to add bleed resistors across their plate. The massive power generated by your plate voltage will kill you instantly. Don’t even try and turn a tube rig on to test with a cabinet open. Plate voltage will kill you instantly. Also, always be careful when running power levels over 100-200 watts. RF burn will ruin your life. Still missing feeling in my left index finger, 20 years later. Cheers.

    • This amplifier puts out an additional 250-300 watts using a bird 43 with a bird peak kit. The MFJ 870 meters don't read correctly on the PEP mode as it doesn't have a powered circuit. A true PEP reading meter will have a powered circuit. The 870 tries to show PEP power, however falls short. It's good for RMS, but not PEP.

      @vegasfordguy@vegasfordguy2 жыл бұрын
  • You smart not over driving that Amp. If you do your signal will get choppy and splatter everywhere. Another thing That MFJ is more for modulation and standing wave ratio than for actually power. You will want to add an old Blue Bird true power meter. I would run it with around a 250 - 300 slug.

    @eriks87cam702@eriks87cam7022 жыл бұрын
    • No, a bigger antenna doesn't require more power. The taller you get the antenna will increase your range of transmit and receive. An aluminum 5/8ths wave antenna such as the penetrator SPT-500, Maco 5000, Sirio Tornado 27, etc are all good Omni directional antennas. Even an A-99 will get you talking, but doesn't compare to the others mentioned. It's a lot harder to reach out 50 miles locally vs a couple thousand miles when skip is rolling. It also depends on your terrain, part of the country, etc.

    • I ran on the super bowl for years, locking the west coast down when I could. Secret to talkin good on the bowl is not just a big amp. Very specific Antenna height, along with a very good ground is vital. Phased array beams work well, but just my twin 3cx3000a7, with custom Peter Dahl transformer, Jennings vacuum variable caps, and an 8 element flat at 56ft, along with wonderful West coast sea level, wet ground, on the salty coast gave me an amazing location to talk anywhere I wanted, any time I wanted. Don’t get me wrong, there were some much bigger stations operating, but if the skip is in your favor, you can lock it down. Other times, skip was in their favor and merely a difference of 200 miles north to south, I would run the show. 2 hours later, wasn’t in my favor, so I’d go check out sideband on the upper frequencies and try to work the world. You know when your station is working good, is when you could point your beam towards the west over the ocean, and you’d hear the big boys talking all over the nation on backscatter. The waving signal and hollow echo sound confirmed they were refracting on backscatter. I’d be talking to Hawaii on the bowl and I’d still hear stations trying to reach Mod Squad and other stations, but still hearing their stations refracting. Many times I’d just be running off my driver without even touching the foot pedal and be smashing all over the place, without using the ceramics. When small shooting stars would come into the atmosphere, if your antenna is big enough it would open up tiny windows or skip, and you could hear other stations in Washington and elsewhere for just small moments in time. Also, was able to work some strong stations out of So Cal, day or night, 700-800 miles away, even on the tiniest amount of skip. Radio is a wonderful thing. It’s mysterious. It’s something I’ve done my entire life. I took about a 20 year hiatus. Family, raised my kids, but now going to step back into it again with a home brew station. Have tower and most of my radio equipment now. Time to set it up this year. Great video. Appreciate the quick tour. Get yourself a nice beam. 4-8 element is all you’ll ever need. I prefer an 8 element flat, 4 element vertical on the same pole. Cheers.

  • Great antenna setup. Only thing is the ground wire in addition to the tower being grounded. No advantage to a long run of small-gauge conductor for lightning protection (or RF either as the SPT provides it's own ground plane). That #14 or #12 wire would look like an inductor to a lightning strike (especially with the coils at the bottom). It also causes a ground-loop situation. Nice freakin setup overall.

  • Considering you're still using Chad's equipment you're not saying very nice things about him you could just say I had a couple issues because you're still working the equipment and the equipment works, Is everything that you do come out perfect every time people are only human
