When I first did these in 2002,the recipe called for quite a bit of pearlite. This made the finished birdbath much lighter than sand with the Portland. I put them in the shed in the winter, it’s pretty cold in Pa. . So far they’re holding up well.

This is so great! Wonderful video. Very inspired to try a version for the climate here in Eastern Canada, I think I will have to use a pre-mixed "crack resistant" concrete blend and some metal reinforcement mesh to ward off expansion and contraction from the temperature fluctuations!

I've seen the tutorial of Mam Helen Wyatt too. You guys did a good job. If I may make a suggestion you can cover the sand with a plastic sheet prior to putting the leaf on so that any stray cement mixture won't come into contact with the sand. Also if you want it to be stronger, you can sandwich wire screen/ mesh within the cement to help prevent it from cracking. 😊

Great video, but you should consider wearing a dust mask at the very least when handling/mixing concrete. Concrete contains silica dust. Inhaling silica dust can cause hardening of the lungs known as silicosis. Which is a dangerous chronic health problem.

I wonder if wire mesh would help strengthen the cement? Also, mounting the different sized leaves on each other or on a stock, requires some protruding mounting wire or rods for that process? How beautiful that is. Yes, I saw the Georgian woman doe this craft too.

Beautiful bird bath. You really should wear a mask and safety goggles while mixing the dry cement and the sand and also when adding the water. Cement is caustic and the dust can damage your lungs and eyes. Wet cement can cause burns to your skin and this is why you wear gloves. If you lay a big sheet of plastic over the sand then lay the leaf on the plastic it will make it so the sand isn't in contact with the cement, leaving you with cleaner edges.
