Montana’s Rock Creek - The Ultimate Fall Fly Fishing Experience
Join me in an incredible adventure to one of Montana's premier trout fisheries in the western part of the state. Wild Brown Trout, Cutthroat seemingly way too big for the size of the creek and feisty Rainbow Trout abound!

Fly fishing for trout, fly fishing for Cutthroat in the Pacific Northwest has been a passion of mine for the last 40 years. I have spent most of my life fly fishing the great Pacific Northwest to include fly fishing in Alaska, fly fishing in Washington, fly fishing in Oregon, fly fishing in Idaho and fly fishing in Montana. I generally will fly fish and practice catch and release when fly fishing for trout, but I have been known to catch and cook during camping trips to many of my favorite fishing spots. I love to fly fish lakes in the higher elevation, though I have a few lowland lakes that are fly fishing only that are also on my most favorite list. I have a ton experience fly fishing rivers for trout and always enjoy discovering new rivers to fly fishing in and around the greater Pacific Northwest. I am also an accomplished at casting a fly rod - whether it is fly fishing casting for distance, fly fishing casting for accuracy, the double haul, roll cast, tower cast and many more fly fishing casting techniques - I can show you the basics when it comes to casting a fly rod. I also will cover many topics that relate to getting started with fly fishing. From your basic fly fishing setups, flies and fly boxes - we cover all the fly fishing needs for beginners. Thanks for taking the time to tune into FlyFishDan and I hope you consider subscribing to my fly fishing channel. Cheers and FISH-ON!!!
your intro's are border line epic....... along with the fishing portion of your vids, thanks Dan...... can hardly wait for the next one.......
Thanks Mike - very kind to say, I am humbled! I certainly love sharing my experiences and passion for the sport. Thank you for your time and FISH-ON!!
Dude that comic style art is off the charts and your browns are actually toads disguised as fish WOW!
Thanks Joel - I had a little fun with that one for sure!
Looks like a bucket list place to go. Loved the comic visual. That was fun. Thanks for taking the time to do that.
It really is an incredible place and a destination that anyone passionate about fly fishing should experienced one day. And thank you, I wondered if most people would make it that far… I lost some footage and then got creative :-)
Wow the trout and the trees were competing to see who could be more beautiful!
It was a glorious day indeed :))
This is another incredible video! I like the homage to "gladiator" ( and marvel comics? In the midddle? Haha) Thanks for putting so much energy to make these mobtana experience available to people like me!

Man I love Rock Creek. Can’t wait to get back again
You and me both! Cheers!
I fished there a couple summers ago, I like that footbridge spot. Only caught some small trout but still a fun time!
It's a tough fishery for sure...definitely worth the return trip. Thanks for watching!
I’m hoping this is Rock Creek outside of Philipsburg, MT. My uncle taught me to fly fish here a decade before he passed. I went several trips in the spring right after the snow melted. He said of all the places he had fly fished in his life that this was the best and at that time of year. Two things I’ll never forget: 1) he said after fishing there annually for 20 years he could see every turn in the river and he would walk it in his dreams. After the second year I experienced the same. I could recall every point I casted on that river. 2) His father (my grandfather, born 1917) was a deep sea fisherman. My uncle said he gravitated to fly fishing as a teenager just to piss off the old man who referred to it as ‘buggy whipping’. Although my grandfather took me a couple of times deep sea fishing, I never was interested in it or any kind of fishing. Then at age 40 my uncle says he has to turn me on to it since we had come from a long line of fly fishermen (on his mothers side). Oh what a gift those memories are. I’ll be back some day Rock Creek.
It really is a special place for sure - thank you for sharing your story!
Great video and luv Rock Creek, although I tend to stay away during summer... can be crazy busy considering the narrow road along the length of the river.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t that busy. We had each spot to ourselves on the three days we fly fished. One of which was a weekend! Thanks for watching - cheers!
It'd crazy all year now. Just tried fishing it today (January 14th), and nearly every single spot was taken within the first 12 miles of the river.
You are a wonderful human Dan
Thanks! I try to be :)) I appreciate your kind words. Cheers!
Outstanding video, Dan!!
Thank you!
Great production value. Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Montana is best in autumn and winter
Agreed!
Homestead is my favorite section, I have had epic days there. Hopper and dropper setup
On my bucket list!!! Thanks Dan!
Any time!
Grew up in that area forgot how beautiful it is… Would love the time to travel out more although to utilize my backyard Lake Coeur D’Alene is stunning this time of year. Today the water was so still it was almost eerie. Great Bass day.
Pretty amazing place indeed - sounds like an amazing day for sure. Cheers!
First time seeing your stuff. Loved it dude. Beautiful scenery. Beautiful fish. Montana in the Fall. Is this Heaven?
Welcome to my channel!
Great video Dan. Keep them coming sir. I'm headed up to that area for 7 days this weekend. We will see how it goes.
Jealous! You are going to have an amazing trip!
How did you go for 7 days in a weekend?????
Thanks Dan for the video, great intro with nature. Thanks for sharing, did the camera issues get resolved?
Thanks Lee - did you catch my easter egg in the video? I found a creative work around due to my lost footage. Oh yeah - new camera on it's way that will solve the problem! Cheers!
Fantastic video, absolutely gorgeous. I’m in Alaska, and all I can think about is fishing in Montana.😊
I love Alaska - such an amazing place. Montana is another incredible state - somewhere you'll definitely want to visit soon. Cheers!
Great place, great vid!
It really is! Thanks Ryan!
Why is it, in all the Rock Creek videos I've watched, no one uses mending when fishing dries. Is "drop and drag" the preferred technique specific to this water???
I do mend quite a bit - but often fish will take flies skating late in the season.
Heading to Missoula for a week in August. I hope the wildfires are few this year. I’m planning to try Rock Creek. Were you fishing at public access areas? Thanks.
That sounds like an amazing trip - you can follow Rock Creek road from I-90 on up...great access points along the way. SUPER rough road, be sure to bring a spare.
You should try the Jefferson river here in Montana
Thank you! I will certainly look into that, much appreciated! Cheers!
When were you fishing, October? What were temps like then?
They were wonderful, lows in the mid-30's in the morning/late evening and highs in the mid-60's during the day. It can be some of the best times to fly fish Montana.
2 mins in, im getting a little emotional, not gonna lie, and i live here! what a great video. Any thoughts on tenkara?
an oldy...but certainly a goodie - thanks for watching and for the kind words. I have never used tenkara before - definitely looks challenging!
hiiii dannnn
Not sure if you commented in here or not. But Rock Creek is fished my appointment only. And only so many people per year are allowed on it. Why it suck a outstanding fishery. Also no Moving water in Montana has been stocked since the late 70s. All natural reproduction.
I'll make my appointment again soon!
