➤➤Transcript (Partial):
The Greeks had the maxim “know thyself”. How do we come to know ourselves in terms of our personalities, and more importantly, potential? Well, one of the first ways to come to know yourself is to understand that you don’t. You know, you can learn to kind of watch yourself like you’re watching a stranger. But you have to adopt a position-this is a position of radical humility, I would say-humility in two senses. So, one sense would be: humility of recognizing your ignorance. So you have to understand that you don’t know who you are. And that’s not easy to understand, because you think you know, but then you know, you remember you can’t control yourself very well, you’re not very disciplined, you're full of flaws, maybe you don’t know yourself as well as you think. But it’s hard to get low enough to understand how deeply it is the case that you are ignorant about who you are. Now, there’s an upside to that, too, which also is that you’re also ignorant about who you could be. And so, the discovery of that, you know, is some reward for the horror of determining who you actually are. Then I would say, well-then you watch yourself. You watch yourself like you’re watching a stranger. You watch what you say and you listen. You think, well, what sort of person would say that? And how am I reacting emotionally when I’m communicating in that manner? Is that making me feel stronger or weaker? Is it filling me with shame? Is it helping my confidence? Am I laying out a lie? Am I deceiving myself and other people? Am I adopting this personality at parties that is designed to impress and to amuse and it comes across as nothing but self centered narcissism? What are my dark fantasies? What are my aggressive fantasies? What is it that I’m willing to do? What am I interested in so that I’ll spontaneously pursue it? What do I procrastinate about and why? What am I unwilling to do? What do I think is good? What do I congratulate myself for accomplishing? And what do I berate myself for failing to confront and to implement? Those are all incredibly complicated questions and you don’t know the answers to them. So that’s-that’s a start. And then, in terms of potential, well, you’ll discover a little bit more about your potential as you discover who you are, especially the darker parts about yourself, because then you discover your potential for mayhem. There’s some real utility in that. It’s actually something that strengthens you, because the first thing that a realization like that can in fact produce is the ambition to incorporate that dangerousness into a higher order personality, and that can make you implacable. That can make you someone who can say “no” when you need to say “no.” You know? That can make you someone who won’t avoid necessary conflict. And so that’s unbelievably useful. And so that’s one of the potentials that you might discover. The other thing you do to discover your potential is to-well you challenge yourself. You know, it’s like-Rule 4 in my book “12 Rules for Life” is: compare yourself to who you were yesterday and not to who someone else is today, and that’s kind of a good way to start this...

I've been clean and sober for 2 years off heroin. 4 months off alcohol now and I am eating better exercising. Taking care of my physical and mental health has be feeling better than ever. Wish I could have learned the humility and great life lessons that I did from that suffering without all the suffering but it didn't turn out that way. Thanks so much for what you do Jordan and I would love to share my story and help others do similar.

A specific example for me would be confidence. As a big fish in a small pond, you would naturally feel very sure of yourself and confident. But as soon as you step out of your comfort zone and your "bubble", you might realize that your level of confidence was dependent on your environment being simple and stale. That's one of the things I realized about myself recently, I've grown too big for my fishbowl.

    • @@omarsheikh7501 my exwife of almost 3 years ended up falling in love with another man and cheated on me months before the end of the marriage. she'd spend hours on the phone with him, eventually sleeping over at his place, and then just 1 day before i move out and just 2 days after the divorce was finalized, I could hear them having sex in what used to be our bedroom. and she'd tell me that i'm amazing, and she regrets our marriage, but also she wishes she'd want to stay and fix things. i truly tried to be a better person and man for her and be more attentive and I never showed another woman the amount of attention i'd give her. I never allowed myself to try to get to know another woman while I was married and devoted. I'd be distracted from video games and shows and ended up neglecting her, but I'd never disrespect her by spending my free time with another woman. I became really resentful of the fact that she promised in our vows that she'd never cheat on me. I guess there should have been a clause in our vows that we'd never stray and fall in love with another person. near the end she'd always keep me at arm's distance and just spend more and more time with him. all the while refusing to say she loved me. refusing to show me any affection. just hugging me was a complete arduous chore for her. she'd wince and cringe any time i'd try to hug or show her i still wanted her. she'd show her love in actions. we still slept in the same bed for a while, we'd talk, she admitted she felt bad that the marriage was ending part of what tells me she was full of shit sometimes was that she'd say the divorce was a bad choice and possibly a mistake. but the cheating? all the infidelity and amount of time she'd spend with him and refusal to spend time with me? that was never a mistake she'd admit to through all of it, her admitting to wanting a divorce, the cheating, the divorce, and so forth; I still loved her and am still in love with her. I forgave her for betraying me and for wanting to leave. I'm still so in love with her. but more and more I find myself wondering if I would take her back if she changed her mind. She broke my trust so many times. and never once seemed sorry for it. so many times I screamed and begged for her to stay and for us to fix things. but she didn't want to. she'd rather just talk to him. to this moment, its only been a few weeks since I moved out, i'd still want her back. but i know i'd be second place sometimes. she'd want to talk to him cause he's her best friend. and i wonder if i could take that. being the person she chose to come back to, but still end up feeling like last place or a 4th or 5th priority

What are my aggressive fantasies? What is it that I’m willing to do? What am I interested in so that I will spontaneity pursue it? What do I procrastinate about and why? What am I unwilling to do? What do I think is good? What do I congratulate myself for accomplishing? And what do I berate myself for failing to confront and implement? I wrote these down so that I can ask myself and see what the answers are. I hope you do the same!

  • One of the most important things with growing is first choosing your center / foundation. Because you can try to learn who you are and try to grow, but unless you have a firm foundation upon which to build and a center upon which to lean on during the hard time, you'll likely see many of your efforts toppled. Additionally, a foundation / center isn't something someone "discovers" about themselves. It is indeed a conscious choice. And some foundations are stronger than others.

    • Me too. 4 years of taxes. My husband used to do it. He developed frontotemporal dementia and recently died. I simply didn't have the brain power or the courage to face that mess. I've been overwhelmed. I've been listening to these recordings for a several months now. I've listened to at least one lecture a day.. Sometimes many.. The taxes were my "elevator." To face my terror of the damn taxes. I started with simply opening the cardboard boxes of receipts. I'd just look inside and then close the box. Eventually I could take some out and really look at them. Then I could take a few out of the box and sort/categorize them. My courage grew exponentially. Two weeks ago I met with my accountant and got all 4 years filed. The relief I feel at finally having this frightening responsibility completed cannot be overstated. I credit J. Peterson for getting me through this.

  • I decided that this was such an amazing speech that I would take notes. Basically I just wrote down the entire thing. This 10 minute KZhead video took about two hours to get through as I clearly do not type particularly fast. Totally worth it.
