Long Flight Home! Returning across the Atlantic from Iceland.
Part 4 of 4. Flight from Egilsstadir Iceland (BEIG) to Wick Scotland (EGPC) returning over the North Atlantic Ocean in the Diamond DA42 VI registration N42LR. Departing Eglisstadir on a foggy morning, then routing via the Faroe Islands back to a Scotland in good weather. Route was just over 600 nautical miles and flight time was 4 hours, burning around 50 gallons of Jet A1. Even though there was turbulence and icing forecast, flight was pretty smooth. Strong head winds picked up at high level on the later legs of the flight.
2020 DA42, Registration N42LR, equipped with the Garmin G1000 NXI avionics. Use of Flight Stream, Garmin Satellite Weather and GWX 68 weather radar. Aircraft equipped with Flight Into Known Icing protection.
Use of Foreflight to aid flight planning and for Jeppesen Charts.
Pilot Headset is a Clarity Aloft in-ear headset.

The view out of the DA42 is superb.
Much better than the DA62!
@@SteveZimmermannAtHome I’ll second that (not biased or anything 😜)
Thank you 🙏 Richard fab as always
What an awesome flight, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for taking us along! Cheers
I don't know how I came upon your channel. But you really found a near perfect format for these type of adventures videos with the panorama window of the plane, 360 camera and more. From a Reykjavík native.
Stunning!! Thanks a lot for sharing.
You're welcome See! Glad you enjoying it 😁👍
What an adventure indeed. Many Thanks Richard!!
As always, you're welcome! 😁👍
Great video again Richard thank you.
You're welcome! 😁👍
Great watch, I managed to get a couple of T/G’s in the DA40 during my PA28 PPL and it’s a completely different beast, wonderful craft and nimble!
Great video thanks so much for sharing
You're welcome Jason! 😁👍
Thank you for the video. Very Nice
You're welcome Harry! 😁👍
That lightspeed headset in the 2nd seat looks left out Richard ;) Great video and with the weather of recent i am surprised you managed a flight back in. Superb flying btw
Another great piece of airmanship and just pure flying !!! 👏👏👏 That’s why we fly. Congratulations Richard, thanks for sharing and looking forward for many more !!!
Thanks Carlos! Hope your plane is still going well! I will be passing the Med in a week or so!
Superb as always Richard ✈️👍
Thanks so much! Glad to see you enjoying them all! 😁👍
Many thanks for sharing cheers
You're welcome! 😁👍
What an awesome flight. Love this format. Definitely deserve 10x the subs!
Thanks so much! Maybe I'll get there one day..... 😁👍
Love you video!
Thanks!! 😁👍
Another great series of video Richard. I’ve just started flying the DA42, about 15 hours in it now. Great to see it being used for real travel.
Thanks! Hope you are enjoying the DA42! I have been down to Bournemouth quite a bit recently, not a bad spot!
Beautiful. :)
Thanks Joel! 😁👍
Flying looks so easy watching it.
I thought the exact opposite after watching this.
@@MarkHopewell 😀
Hallo from Luxembourg 🇱🇺 you have a nice chanel
Another amazing video Richard one to try in msfs. look forward to the next video
You're welcome Mark! Not long until the next one
Finally new video :D
New sub. Really enjoy the vlogs
Thanks Pieter! Glad you enjoy them! 😁👍
A smashing little motor. I wonder if its modelled in MSFS yet?... Meanwhile, I felt freezing cold watching this - the immersion was sufficient to cause it. I don't watch many real world flying presentations - what's the point?! However, this pilot stands out particularly for me. He appears very conscientious (as they all are, obviously) but really thorough in preparations for the flight and in flight too. I note he's a helicopter pilot by profession. He appeared much more than a weekend pilot from the off even though at the time I wasn't aware of his "day job", so to speak. This presentation has had a lasting positive effect on me. Thank you for sharing it.
Thanks so much Mark! Glad you enjoyed watching it. The 42 isn't modelled in MSFS (as far as I'm aware), but the DA62 which is available is modelled very well. Cockpit is nearly the same and it has similar performance. Cheers, Rich 😁👍
awesome bud
Thanks! 😁👍
32:23 it’s faster just because of my polishing skills at 7 in the morning☝🏼😜😂

Just found this, great video - I just found it amusing that his narration to camera sounded EXACTLY like an airliner's pilot announcements to his passengers. "We're aah...flying at aah 10,000 feet....aah,..." Not being critical, just found it amusing.
As much as I tell myself not to do it...... I keep on doing it! I think it's a combination of a lot going on in the background while having to talk to a GoPro! 😂
You pronounced Keiss correctly. I live there! Love the videos btw.
We do get Amazon prime too lol
Missed the route change where you seemed to fly back on 202 towards to VA after takeoff but didn't continue onto Hotel November on the South East Icelandic Coast...you were able to route out to sea on about 130?
Was the right engine temp got ok after going in the clouds?
Another excellent video but a bit surprised that a Brit does not know at least the C20th history of Scapa Flow.
Scapa Floe is one of the best diving sites on the planet with lots of German WW1 battleships that were scuttled there. The Orkney Islands are filled with 6000 years of history!
@@frglee - Agree. 🌻
Yup.... I regretted not researching the area before flying over it, looking into the history I wish I had....
nice! new sub:)
Thanks Gaston! Enjoy! 😁👍
Richard, why plan for only 60% power in cruise, given the stiff headwinds? Fuel concerns? The normal rule of thumb is to increase cruise power when flying into a headwind, in order to reduce the length of time you’re exposed to it.
It really depends on the type of aircraft (Jet, turboprop, piston etc) with their cruise speed relation to the drag curve. I find with the 42, until you get to a 30kt head wind you get better range with reduced power setting (and this varies with 50/60% performance profiles) Anything above that better range is with a higher power setting! 😄👍
@@richardtyrer Richard, congrats on your crossing! What average headwinds did you have on the leg to BGSF and how much fuel did you use on that leg?
Wow, you have to be one of the most knowledgeable aviator KZheadrs. Can I ask what your background is? I assume you’re an airline pilot.
Thanks Bob! My background is mainly corporate in both business jets and helicopters 😁👍
Awesome video as always. Do you use a clap to sync the two audios as well as the videos? I'm pretty sure the audio is off in this video by probably only a single frame. Just something to consider :)
I do lots of clapping! I have had an issue with audio drift on one of the camera's. It took a long time to correct this one but yes, it is a little off! 😁👍
@@richardtyrer Nice, thanks for the response. Looking forward to watching the latest tonight!
I'm sure you said "Egilsstadir", right? Had to listen to it 3 times. Btw, how did you like our little storm earlier this week?
Haha I think everyone in Iceland was laughing at my prononciation 😂 So difficult to get it correct! I missed the storm you guys had! I know you get pretty sever weather up there!
circular camera in that cockpit was a nice idea
It's a GoPro Max! Works really well! 😁
Hellloouuuuuu
Hello!!! 👋
Which immersion suit is that Richard ?
In the meantime until Richard can confirm, it looks like the Switlik U-Zip-It. I have one that I need to do some final fitting with. Richard: curious how tight you ended up leaving your neck seal? I have to trim mine quite a bit, but curious of the sensation that you have when it is “just right”
@@toddjc1999 Is that mandatory?
@@stesma54That specific suit isn't mandatory - for example you can apparently use a "gumby" suit, but I have heard folks not recommending them due to discomfort, problems operating controls, and overheating. I'm not sure exact what the law is, but I believe that you need to take appropriate measures --- since you'd die in 1-2 minutes without the suit I'd say it is pretty mandatory then.
Sorry Joel! Missed your comment! It's made by survitec. They can custom make them with different seals and dimensions. This one is actually really comfy, I don't mind flying in it at all!
Honestly Todd I have my neck seal a little loose. I think if I ended up in the water it would leak a little for sure, but not that much by the time I got into a raft. I went for the option of being comfortable in flight is safer than being strangled!
Eglestar airport? 😅
Haha..... or however you pronounce it 😂
Perhaps you didn't have the time to spare, but why not stop off in the Faroe Islands for a break?
I wish I had the time but I had to get back! Something I definitely want to do for the future!
hello Richard .I need to fly to Iceland with my TBM850.let me know contact details since need another pilot.
Thanks for sharing Richard. But... not knowing the history of Scapa Flow?! Dude! 😉en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scapa_Flow
