Cole produce lyrical rap (deeper message in their songs). Another example is lil wayne; an artist that uses these type of beats but has extremely in depth lyrics and hidden meanings. I personally prefer this type of music, but I don't go around trashing on other genres.

  • I am a musician and music teacher for 26 years. As many of us are, I am as open minded as they come when it comes to music. That being said, I was just talking to my 15 yer old son about this stuff, and how one dimensional it is. It all sounds the same. There are tons of rappers making music that doesn't sound like this. Those are the ones that will move the genre forward. Andersen.Paak, Kendric, Cordae...those are the guys who will be around for a long time and help rap get better. It's like in the 50's when all the rock and roll songs sounded the same. Eventually, it diversified. Love your stuff, Rick...from a central New Yorker!

Rap is a completely valid and incredibly rich genre, and even if this song isn't the best example it's still perfectly fine.     • Well they are different types of rappers and their music is designed to ellicit a different type of feeling than this song. Music isn't and shouldn't be monolithic. There is room in rap to acknowledge the lyricism and skill of the J.I.D while also appreciating the beat heavy and catchy nature of this song
