I am a musician and music teacher for 26 years. As many of us are, I am as open minded as they come when it comes to music. That being said, I was just talking to my 15 yer old son about this stuff, and how one dimensional it is. It all sounds the same. There are tons of rappers making music that doesn't sound like this. Those are the ones that will move the genre forward. Andersen.Paak, Kendric, Cordae...those are the guys who will be around for a long time and help rap get better. It's like in the 50's when all the rock and roll songs sounded the same. Eventually, it diversified. Love your stuff, Rick...from a central New Yorker!

Bro I think you lack the ability to vibe. The rappers you listed (Kendrick and Cordae) make a lot of politcal rap that has a time and a place. Not everything needs to be super meaningful my guy
@chad_usa8 ай бұрын
I can vibe. It's not the content of the lyrics I'm talking about, but the fact that the backing tracks and rhythm and timbre of the songs and voices all sound the same. I don't care what they talk about. Even going back to the 80's and 90's the artists all sounded different. Today's rap is very one dimensional. It's the rappers that set themselves apart musically that will have longevity. 90% of rappers are 1 or 2 hit wonders@@chad_usa

The fact that the comments are filled with people saying gunna is trying to sing when he's clearly just rapping says a TON.

Well, even for a rap song this is below par. I get the sound and trappy beat, and it's a vibe (vibe almost alwasy stands for it's trash) but it's nowhere near as skilled as J.I.D., Griselda, Danny Brown, Billy Woods or any good rapper.

I'd have cut it at "melo". Just that. Doesn't deserve the 3rd part. Anyway most of these "songs" are actually simply *tunes* that people listen to as a background noise simply because they themselves don't care about what they're listening to to begin with. Our little ramblings here don't mean much to the whims & wishes of the masses xd.
Thank you 😆
He's rapping, its not supposed to be a melody note-wise. That's like trying to use a pan to make soup and getting mad ab it
Even unison is a form of melody, not very interesting but yet it depends on what's going on in the background remember the one note samba?
@@chandlermccoy1813true. Trying to turn rap into music just doesn’t work 😂
Bro that’s an amazing song
I heard that..”TIMMY TIMMY TIMMY TURNER”
I'm so glad that Rick, with all his amazing skill at ear training, was able to pick out this tune for us. Perhaps he'll do an entire tutorial with a split screen tablature on it so we can all attempt to add it to our repertoire.

“Two note melody” about a rap song is crazy

As a guitarist and a rap producer, this was hilarious 😂 I definitely have some interesting experiences in my sessions where these two worlds meet haha
EXACTLY 😂 these niggas in the comments to serious 😂
As a producer too i agree
Yo sorry to do this, but would any of you guys be willing to give give me honest feedback and help on what to do better? I’m not a producer at all and, I’d love some advice and suggestions on how I can get my voice to stick and sound more clear/distinct on beat!

@@Nicodearl It's not hard to understand. Simple 8th note rhythms that never change. No variation, no complexity, literally nothing interesting about it. And they ALL do it. It's all exactly the fucking same. You can take any artist like this and it all sounds like exactly the same song. People say the album is dead, but the reality is that people make such boring, generic, unoriginal music these days that nobody could stand listening to a whole album of it.

Comments more boomer than the guitarist. "Artists no talent these days" No dude. You only hear the stuff that's played in malls and tiktok and aren't willing to venture away from your "old is gold" stuff. There's talent everywhere, you won't find it if you won't look for it. Y'all acting like your previous generation
youre clearly not familiar with this guys content. every couple months he does a chart review and more often than not finds a lot of good things to say about the songs
it would be much easier if the good stuff was on the charts and the crap was hidden rather the other way around.
Yeah, I'm tired of them looking for any excuse to be like "we did it better."
@@jannidyjannidyjanjan I know very well what his content is. He's a musician so ofc he is going to be more open-minded than the general public when analysing diverse songs. But even he isn't exempt from forming biases and occasionally leaning towards elitism (which is why a lot of these viewers gravitate towards his stuff). My comment is more directed towards the many viewers who are insistent that music should be done in a particular way, or that certain genres are superior, or that things were way better before.
I thought Rick knew the lyrics bro really said “ da da da da da da “
Almost like he’s humming the melody? You act like everyone ever doesn’t do this
Yeah, because "da da da da da da" is basically what he sayin anyway 😂
He didnt sing bc of the lyrics, he sing like that bc it’s the melody… when it comes to melody, lyrics dont matter, only the rhythm matters

Most people don't want to hear Kendrick going on about the current state of the world when they're just driving to work. Even Kendrick knows this which is why he put SIlent Hill on his latest album. Not everything needs to be super meaningful my guy
@@chad_usa oh the same comment again. I guess this guy could be fabricating what he is saying but so could you. If we were to believe him to be a musician for 26 years wouldn't you think a musician knows how to listen to music and have fun? It seems to me you are trying to defend your own ego here
@@Roockert Yes you're right, I made an assumption that he lacks the ability to vibe and I used the words "I think" (as I don't know for sure). I don't understand why you think I'm trying to defend my ego. I can't even tell you what my ego would be based on my reply. I just stated that there is a time and a place for different types of music including Gunna.
You and your son should listen to Kanye West. Although his views may steer some people off, he’s most certainly one of the most influential musicians in the 21st century. Check his stuff out.
Gunna:- fukumean Rick :- whatumean 😂
*He actually pronounced it correctly.*
Perfectly suitable music for the intellectual capacity of the american goblin masses
The comments are so lame, just because you despise rap music (for some reason) doesn't mean there isn't artistic merit to the music. Rap is a completely valid and incredibly rich genre, and even if this song isn't the best example it's still perfectly fine.
Well they are different types of rappers and their music is designed to ellicit a different type of feeling than this song. Music isn't and shouldn't be monolithic. There is room in rap to acknowledge the lyricism and skill of the J.I.D while also appreciating the beat heavy and catchy nature of this song
Yeah fr mfs hating for no reason can we enjoy all music for what it is. This is not a good melodic rap song but to just hate on rap and gunna and whatever for no reason is really stupid.
@@AgentLemmondo you listen to music as a competition comparing artists to eachother? Every artist is different in someway you don’t listen to 2 different artists for the same exact music.
