The US Coast Guard says it is tracking a suspected Russian spy ship in international waters off the coast of Hawaii as tensions between Washington and Moscow remain heightened over Russia's war in Ukraine. CNN's Oren Liebermann reports. #CNN #News
Ex-salior here. This is quite common. They are called 'radar picket ships'. This one is larger then the usual to be able to navigate open ocean. when we would go out to exercise with other Pacific navies there would always be a Russian spy ship sit just outside the exercise area and monitor everything. Outside of many ports of US allies ports there is a picket ship about the size of a large tug boat anchored just on the edge of territorial waters. easy to spot, they had antennas all over them. No biggie, we just ignored them.
There is one just south of Pascagoula shipyard
No biggie -- they are only decrypting all of our military communications 😆
USS Enterprise CVN -65 , says tons of these back in the late 80's
What happens when they board a ship like this? Guns drawn and stuff?
Stu Bonner, so let me ask the question that the reporter didn't ask. What kind of information can a spy ship pick up? It seems to me that they can get everything they need to know by watching American TV.

These ships help transport cocaine around the world.
This made me laugh really hard, that’s the most obvious “spy” ship. They’re taking absolutely zero measures to try to remain anonymous
😅
Because technically it’s completely legal in international waters. I bet the US does the same in the Arctic ocean, but Russian media doesn’t go as far.
TJ< CNN is calling it a spy ship to get views. This made russia laugh at us as well.
The only fishing boats never to catch a fish were the Soviet ' fishing boats ' off the east Coast of Scotland bristling with antenna in the 50s and 60s.
We always had Russian trawlers near us during the Vietnam war. They would cross right in front of us even when we were operating our aircraft. I think it was the Kitty Hawk that almost ran one down because Kitty Hawk had the right of way and was engaged in air ops. The Russians would deliberately get in our way and make us back down.
I consider that ship target practice.

These events happen all the time….when I was active duty US Navy, our CO used to do circles around the Russian ships, until the seas were so ruff inside the circle, they would have to move, then we would chase them for a while….this is a non issue, great for training.
Nobody said its an issue unless the Russ operate in a way that raises the potential for incidents with civilian ships. This is purely for information purposes anyway, kinda like "we see what you're doing there".
Or you coulda all shouted ruff at the same time...

@@roofpizza1250 if you saw how violently the ships rocked, when we circled them doing high speed turns, you would understand, it is a method to make them move, not a lot you can do in international waters….it’s just a Cold War game, Russian fishing boats off the coast with all kinds of antennas….it happens all the time.

Back in 1973 (half-century ago!), our destroyer squadron was tailed by Russian naval vessels all the way up the west coast of Canada to Adak. Newsflash: The Cold War never really ended, folks.
We were going to a range in Alaska to bang off some expired shells and picked up a submarine off the BC coast just in our waters edge (Can Navy). Dropped 3 grenades to signal surface and identify, it didn't. Played cat and mouse to north of Hawaii and had to go in for fuel and an American destroyer picked up the game from there. Great fun.

The Russian ship is on international water so even if the Russian ship did know what the U.S submarine was doing underneath them they still wouldn't care much about it because everything their doing is fully legal and they know it. Their protected under international law of international water free navigation. The U.S Navy does this all the time and does it more then any country in the world. For example China have been threatening Taiwan for decades and everytime things tense up the U.S Navy would send their fleet to sail right off China water line with out actually entering China water making it fully legal. But recently the tension between China and Taiwan is on a different dangerous level now and why U.S decided not to do that anymore. China use to always play this game with Taiwan also sailing and flying fighter jets up to Taiwan water line and air space with out actually violating it in show of force. But recently China have been bold and have been straight up violating Taiwan waters and air space regardless of what International have to say now. 2 months ago China flew fighter jets and bomber right over Taiwan airspace and territories. Taiwan Airforce responded and scramble their fighter jet to confront the Chinese but at the end they did noting and in the air space over Taiwan it just turn into a cat and mouse situation with no actual shoot down. It was a weird situation... As much as Taiwan hates having their water and air space violated they also don't want to give China a single reason to invade them.
Also, when nosing around an exercise area they would sometimes run into the area and try to grab our sonobuoys from our fence lines before they timed out and sank.
Perfectly normal

My bet is that they're waiting for SpaceX's Starship orbital test flight, which is to splash down off of Hawaii. They'd be interested in the telemetry and noting the exact location in order to possibly recover one of the engines, which is ITAR restricted.
But aren't they worried about fast ascending subs under the hull ?
There's also no love lost between Musk and Russia. A major reason that SpaceX came into existence was that Russia refused to sell him a decommissioned ICBM for him to use in a private Mars mission. He and Roscosmos aren't on each others Christmas card lists either... witness the verbal sparring since Ukraine-related sanctions resulted in them losing a number of lucrative satellite launches.
