The US Coast Guard says it is tracking a suspected Russian spy ship in international waters off the coast of Hawaii as tensions between Washington and Moscow remain heightened over Russia's war in Ukraine. CNN's Oren Liebermann reports. #CNN #News

  • Ex-salior here. This is quite common. They are called 'radar picket ships'. This one is larger then the usual to be able to navigate open ocean. when we would go out to exercise with other Pacific navies there would always be a Russian spy ship sit just outside the exercise area and monitor everything. Outside of many ports of US allies ports there is a picket ship about the size of a large tug boat anchored just on the edge of territorial waters. easy to spot, they had antennas all over them. No biggie, we just ignored them.

  • We always had Russian trawlers near us during the Vietnam war. They would cross right in front of us even when we were operating our aircraft. I think it was the Kitty Hawk that almost ran one down because Kitty Hawk had the right of way and was engaged in air ops. The Russians would deliberately get in our way and make us back down.

    • The Russian ship is on international water so even if the Russian ship did know what the U.S submarine was doing underneath them they still wouldn't care much about it because everything their doing is fully legal and they know it. Their protected under international law of international water free navigation. The U.S Navy does this all the time and does it more then any country in the world. For example China have been threatening Taiwan for decades and everytime things tense up the U.S Navy would send their fleet to sail right off China water line with out actually entering China water making it fully legal. But recently the tension between China and Taiwan is on a different dangerous level now and why U.S decided not to do that anymore. China use to always play this game with Taiwan also sailing and flying fighter jets up to Taiwan water line and air space with out actually violating it in show of force. But recently China have been bold and have been straight up violating Taiwan waters and air space regardless of what International have to say now. 2 months ago China flew fighter jets and bomber right over Taiwan airspace and territories. Taiwan Airforce responded and scramble their fighter jet to confront the Chinese but at the end they did noting and in the air space over Taiwan it just turn into a cat and mouse situation with no actual shoot down. It was a weird situation... As much as Taiwan hates having their water and air space violated they also don't want to give China a single reason to invade them.
