It’s all about what you’re experienced with If you’re used to the sound of your headphones and know them very well you can usually make a really good mix on them In jons case he’s used speakers for basically every video I’ve seen so of course he would be more used to mixing on speakers than headphones
its how i feel, i use pioneer hdj x10s for mixdowns and the mixdowns are decent quality
Dude koan sound used headphones for a good while. They consistently have had amazing mixes throughout their career. Its all about experience. Agreed.
John Bach didn’t know that but yeah, there’s not much that beats a loan sound mix. It baffles me how clean they can get there mix while still having so much going on. Also they’re sub is always so clean.
For me it is the opposite :D I cant hear anything with Monitors
Same
these people don´t have nothing more to talk about. I use everything. Many times only macbook speakers will give you a sense of reality again. Now i bought 40$ wireless earbuds, it is also a nice experience to have all the comfort and hear music like everyone. Just for latency of course no one uses bluetooth
I have no problem mixing with headphones because I have done it so long. You can get great mixes using headphones if you know them well and know how they translate. I have several pairs (open and closed back) for comparison. My main heaphones are ATH-M40x, but I also use AKG K240s, Sennheiser HD280PROs, Sony MDRV6 and others. That gives me the ability to compare. Of course, if you mix to sound good on monitors in a particular studio, it will sound great there. However, that doesn't mean your mix will translate well to whatever the end user is listening on. All studio monitors sound different and rooms and placement also add to the equation. That is why engineers in major studios used Yamaha NS10Ms and Auratones for so long. It was not because they were the best sounding speakers (they weren't). It was because they could make more objective decisions when moving from studio to studio. My advice is to mix on headphones, monitor speakers, or whatever you feel comfortable with. However, it is much more important to then check your mixes on headphones, earbuds, home speakers, car stereos, wireless bluetooth speakers, club systems, and any other type of device/system that your listener may be using.
M40x gang yesss
I swear by good headphones! You're in a real STUDIO, but 99% aren't
Monitors are too expensive for me and this video makes me feel that headphones are holding me back .
@@pranayavnish8028 How much is "too expensive"? Are you only looking at the best ones?
Pranay Avnish In my opinion there definitely things you can do with headphones, such a recording/tracking and composing. And even sounddesign TO a degree. But when it comes to mixing, getting a good mix with headphones is very hard! I’ve been trying it for years, longggg time ago and at times I was ‘lucky’ but I really discoverd after years that when it comes to good mixes, it did definitely hold me back. There are people that can do mircles on them but as far as I know most people can not. I definitely need my monitors. I’d consider saving up for them and just as important..... acoustic room treatment!! Big BUT.... in the meantime you don’t have to sit still, just keep on going but consider a plan for saving up. I agree 100% with Jon but please don’t feel down, you can do lots of things, even compose and arrange (arrange to a degree but as long as you make sure you keep all your midi and automation in tact you can always recall it- and do the mixing later). Don’t let this spiritually hold you back, lots of success!
Thanks for the advice 👍
Pranay Avnish Welcome! 🙂
Hey Jon. Do you have some measurements from your studio? I would love to see your frequency response so I can compare it to my studio. Thanks for a good channel.
Hi Jon! What do you think about A77Xs? About this topic, I mix on my studio monitors mostly because of the stereo imaging.. I check the mix on my headphones at the final stages, but I think if you don't have a pair of studio speakers you can learn your headphones and you can get some good results. Have a nice day & keep up the good work!
If you mainly mix on high quality open back headphones rather than studio monitors, you will get to know what good sound like on those headphones better than monitors. And the same happens if you use mainly monitors to mix. So it really depends on which you use more.
Totally agree with you on this. I have the room treatment down and now I have to get studio monitors that play all the way down to about 30-40 Hz to hear my kick/bass acurately. Have solo 6's and reference 4 but it's not enough. I still run around a little checking mixes😃
Been guilty of mixing 95 percent in headphones, even my released music. Recently my headphones broke. I have monitors but when I can use them it's super early in the morning. I tried just getting a quick balance at an extremely low volume. I'm very impressed at the results. Also did a comparison on laptop speakers and with a reference track. I don't have an acoustically treated space atm but I think I'm gonna go forward mostly mixing on monitors (low vol in morning and hopefully check at normal vol during day- I live a busy life 😁) Thanks Jon!
Better tip: mix softly, test out, adjust. Conclusion: does not matter where u test on just know your gear and have honest ears (compare)
Bro mad respect on where you're hearts coming from on giving back. I love it
Hey! I love your content! got a question tho, I am torn on what to get for my music production journey, whether to get in ear monitors (IEM) or headphones, what would you suggest?
Hey. Do you recommend the status audio cb1 headphone in its price range ?
What do you think about the beyerdynamic dt 1990 Headphones?
At first I was using closed back headphones next to my monitors. Switched over to open back AKGs and they are sound(experience) wise more close to the sound of my monitors.
ive only used headphones xd then again im in a really small room and most of the people that listen to my music also listen on headphones... also, i prefer mixing on headphones over speakers any day it just sounds clearer and i can hear more fine details on headphones that i cant with speakers without having a good room and good speakers
I agree ..never managed to get a good mix on headphones for all the reasons you mention .. produce on low volume under 80db especially if your room isn’t treated and to prevent ear fatigue .. I would recommend having a sub as most monitors don’t go below 50hz .. can’t mix what you can’t hear . Also check your mix on headphones during your session to make sure it translates and there are no harsh frequencies .. and have a reference track but make sure it’s in the same key of your project .. our ears are adaptive so you could be making bad mix decisions that sound good while you’re producing.. take breaks rest your ears and listen to your favourite playlist .. if it still sounds good the next day you’re golden . Most good songs come together pretty fast ,usually in one session .. sometimes you doubt yourself because it came together too quickly .. it can’t be good right ? Wrong ..this is when you need a good producer group to get the right feedback ... make the music you love and have fun doing it
If your used to mixing in your usual studio then you know your room and can tell what frequencies are being boosted or cut. Jon is used to the studio he mixes in so when he goes back home to mix on headphones it's a different space. Also on headphones you can't really hear the stereo field as you would on speakers so what happens is some elements sound louder on headphones because they appear central in the stereo spectrum. The really is no right or wrong. If you have good ears and mixing experience you can mix to a good degree. The last part of the mix should of course be monitored in a treated room with good monitors just to cross reference
One of the studios I go to has a preamp with crossfeed function and it's just confusing like not natural sounding.
I use a Philips SHP2000. I was only $20. I always have reference tracks to compare. Usually I mix at 10-12 (windows output). Then I compare loudness and balance of my mix at 2-16. Finally, when I think a track is up to it, I play back at 18-24. I keep the whole mix at around -10 dB. When I run the mix through my master section it must sound kind of natural. I would not mix longer than 15-20 minutes and then take a break for 5-15 minutes. Keep the ears fresh. My first production sounds crappy because I did not take breaks and I used fx for the sake of fx. However, experimenting this way I discovered what sounds I want to hear in my mixes. So really, I think it's a lot of fun. Don't care too much about monitors as long as my mixes are getting better :)
Just as I get my DT1990s back lol. Use Both Guys, Or whatever you are used to. Not everyone has an "off-site" studio, so for people that cant have speakers on all the time, or rarely at all, don't give up or feel that you cant make music because of it. Just continue. You aren't at a massive disadvantage. I use the dt1990s, M40x and then HS7 speakers. My mixes from the beyer 1990s never come out/translate bad on my speakers. But I agree that not having speakers at all isnt great.
How much ohms should I choose if I have a bad PC?
If someone could mix your tracks to the same standard would you delegate the mixing work to save yourself time doing other tasks?
That's a weird advice. :D The advice I'd give is to listen to your tracks through as many devices as possible: cheap and expensive headphones, speakers, your smartphone speakers, portable speakers, your car speakers, an old radio... :D Silently and loudly... You'll be able to hear so much more. People will be listening to your tracks through many different devices, make sure it sounds great on all of them :D
Yea to double check but you mix on one or two pairs of speakers usually.
@@Jonsine I've just downloaded your PDFs and and some samples, they sound great and got me inspired! Thanks!!
I have no option but to use headphones. But that's just my life...
Yes in a perfect world I wish I could afford and have a better acoustic environment in a bedroom. But luckily there are great alternatives to help me eventually get there one day. So for now, I’m using sonar works “reference”, mastering the mix “reference/bass room”, and coming soon Subpac. The later more important so I can feel where the low-end sits and save my ears better. I had a spell of tinnitus because of the headphones so, I def understand where your coming from. Perhaps you can talk about ear fatigue, that would be a great topic and tie into your healthy lifestyle. Cheers my man.
İ just bought studio 3,is it ok cause it feels kicks does not sound the same
All the food you eat looks really good, even when you go out. Is that because you're eating healthy or does Germany have really great foods?
I am from Germany and I can tell you that food quality here in Germany is horrible for its price and there are many reasons for this. however, the germans won't even notice, food culture is very poor here and the people here will just assume that our food quality is good because we are one of the wealthiest countries in the world when in fact it is the opposite :D if anyone tells you otherwise they clearly have no clue
First of all - know your gear). My first headphones was some pretty cheap Pioneers (I even don't remember what the model name was). I used them for all - films, music, a lot of music - from classics through drumfunk to metal)) And I figured out how to make my stuff sound more or less acceptable. There was a lot of room for enchancement to make sound more pretty and engaging but overall i've got pretty balanced mixes. After some time I bought my first monitors and they sounded as flat as table - detailed and boring flat)) And my mixes started to sound like sh..t, and there was some time spent to get them at least to the level they were before).
Most headphones until recently haven't been tuned to the Harmann Target curve. Find studio headphones that have and you will be able to mix on them no problem. Easily better than in an averagely treated room with decent monitors. The problem with most headphones, including the ones you have is that their frequency response curve is wrong and don't emulate speakers correctly. This is starting to change with a lot of newer models though.
Crossfeed doesn't happen when you listen in headphones, which some plugins can emulate, some cant... also headphones sre not truly stereo so if you make and mix music with only headphones you need to account for this. A big advantage of headphones is that it removes the room out of the equation but when it really comes down to it it's better to use gear you know rather than the best gear that you don't know
Hey Jon, you ever try Waves NX? It helps me a ton since I don't have a studio.
Matthew Valcourt I agree with you. The NX plugin never blew me away, but what they did with the Abbey Studio plugin and the NX tracker is amazing. I actually had to check whether or not I still had my monitors turned up. Really cool tech and makes it less fatiguing, more enjoyable and easier to mix on headphones.
@@kenporter6059 I've gotten that sensation. I have yet to try the Abbey Road Studio plugin, but it seems amazing by what they claim.
I use headphones so I wanna hear what Jon has to say on it
Get Adams headphones. They say the older you get , you lose a certain percentage of your hearing.
I like to work with headphones, i got some really flat one Not bassboosted pair from AKG, i know how they work and sound.
To me monitors are a way to hype on my music, I have a vintage hifi set up for my studio with no acoustic so it would be terrible mixing without headphones. Plus you get much more detail.
of course, a good studio is better in many ways. but since i live in an flat with paper-walls, theres no option. using the phonon and atm even cheap open dt 990, which are totaly alright making the sound professional.
Funny thing is, I wachted your video and made later music at home with my headphone and it sounded very well. In the morning I had listen to it in the car and was shocked😀😀 better go to my studio to make music
I stand in front of the same problem. I want to use headphones, when I produce at night. But every song sounds dull and dampened the next day. All the details in the headphones make me think, that the sound is already gritty, bitey and has a clarity in the upper mids and highs. So I tend to tame them down in this regions. Even slight distortions feel aggressive enough for a dirty bass. But on the next day they sound like tame, fluffy kittens.
While its not recommended to solely mix on (Open Back) headphones, I enjoy it more than speakers and only use the latter when checking the mix.Like the science say we are receptive to sound frequencies differently
kingboy you turn to enjoy it ? Good grammar
@@Adetokunbo-f I'm French so pardon the grammar mistake.. but I guess your motives aren't meant to correct my mistake huh!
I find it funny 😂 but it’s not the end of the world hey ?. But saying that I can’t speak French!
@@Adetokunbo-f no mate funny is that useless beat you got going on your page ,😁 now go be humble to others
kingboy hey you getting so upset lol typically French
I thought I was the only one with the same opinion. my partners call me crazy because I cant have the same level with headphones no matter how expensive they are.
I have the same probelem... every time i start a track at night with phones... on thw other day... i listen kn monitors and it sounds like crap lol
Artist called arty used, i dont know if he does it anymore make all hes music with headphones he had genelecs but stil uses the 90% headphones. Eric prydz aswell producing with headphones
Skrillex once said that most of his tracks (2010-2011) was made on headphones on touring. What do you think about that statement ,since his production is from another world and dimension? But you are talking totally opposite ..
Green DoG Maybe Skrillex had a $500 per hour mixing engineer to do a final balance and polish on his projects before they were released?
I do mix with headphones then later balance it with studio monitor 💯💯💯💯🔥 #logicProx
weell hd800 and sonarwork work pretty well
Agreed 100.000%
Agreed.
OMG I Need this
Very interesting❤
Soooo...buy me a pair of monitors so I can produce music😁😁😁
I am just like you, although everyone tells me to use my headphones I hate them! LOL
Liking the techno
I don't get the problem... I use to do my stuff mostly with headphones and i like a heavy base and also to feel it... and i got no problem doing that with my equipment. maybe your possesion for audio reached a level which is not goood for you and which could end up in a problem...
Interesting... when I’ve worked in studios ive actually had and seen other professionals have the opposite experience
what happened in 1:49 to 3:00 ??
Messed up the edit
Don't listen that guy. You can make a full album with headphone for sure
And to think most people nowadays (the “consumer”) listen to music on AirPods, Beats, Bluetooth speaker, or their phone .
this is why the statement of the title is pointless. Use everything, and know where is the ground and where is the sky
Headphones make a mix sound deceptively big to me. All of the spacial/stereo elements sounds bigger to me on headphones. When I play a headphone mix back, the kick and other drum elements sound too loud or bright and the total body of the track sounds small. Sometimes it’s not the case but more often than not, my headphone mixes will sound small. It’s counter intuitive. I have tried mixing in mono and that helps for some mixes but it’s still hit and miss. Real monitoring is essential. All elements should be picked while listening on real monitors. IMHO.
I am really agreed with this Studio speakers are far better then headphones just by watching lots of Videos bit now i want to know in real may be i could win that giveaway and i really love these speakers ❣️❣️🙏
Good video, you look like Toby from The Office
Headphones never worked for me too. Besides that you blow an incredible amount of dust into your ears with headphones.
Haha. Try telling that to Andrew Scheps.
Just get you some good studio headphones like Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Headphones which I own works perfectly fine 100%
My best music was made wearing headphones. Matter of habits
I think this guy thinks he is Calvin Harris? Iglooghost who produces using sounds and samples on his laptop using an old version of reason gets more monthly streams than this person. He didn’t start with worrying about his headphones or flooring. Produce how you want to and do what makes you happy. Obsessing over all this makes you an audio engineer not a creative musician. Just create music, enjoy it, don’t fall down this isolated lonely rabbit hole of cataloguing your life via KZhead in order to develop separate income streams because you don’t sell enough of your own music and then tell others how they should make theirs. If you are talented enough and persevere with making music the outcome will be good if you aren’t that’s ok too.
i mean.. did u know Eric Prydz used to mix on Headphones??
really?
he "can" mix on Headphone and he used to -- is more precise. check coffee run -- Deadmau5 and eric prydz.
The A/B test is not volume matched, so impossible to tell the difference :-(
I just wish to make music on monitors but my monitors are shit and sound even shittier then they should because my room acoustics are shit. Also I got a shitty environment with the family all screaming shit. So yeah everything is shit here. I just use my semi-shitty headphones.
dude needs some self care - i can relate
hey guys
hahaha idk man, its just your feeling right? I think u just gotta know your headphones, same as you gotta know your room and your speakers.
I Can't afford
1:50 Broo what :D
A minute of silence for all those who still use headphones 🙏
bruh for everyone that hasnt a really good acoustically treated room, monitors are way worse than headphones
I used the NX Virtual Mix Room because I dont have an acoustically treated room and good monitor to hear what I'm mixing, I'm still on M-Audios so the NX helps me all the time, and I mix on low volume not to get ear fatigue and my mixes translate well on all the systems. Someday when I afford proper monitors like the ones you are using here and can have my room treated then I will stop using headphones for mixing, at the moment I use Sennheiser HD Pro 280 headphones, I hear everything well especially the kicks and bass, my ears are used to the headphones now I know my way around it. But Thanks for the advice, another thing is Yoad Nevo once said he mixes on headphones as well sometimes
AVOID MONITORS FOR MUSIC MAKING
Open back headphones anyone?
you have to learn to hear depth with headphones
This title and video makes no sense. More title makes no sense. So many producers using only headphones. Me personally like more headphones to mix and even master and it translates everywhere good. Everyone almost have phone or car and mobile to check A/B with other tracks after you mix on headphones. So dont let people think headphones are bad because they are good, dont let them think that!!!
"Sutter Dae"
I saw this video in my recommended list read the title clicked on it and had to stop to make a comment. This is some real bad advice here if you don't have a good professional room with the right treatment and speakers(that cost a fortune) that are calibrated to that room then you are 100% better of using headphones in combination with plugins like Goodhertz Canopener for crossfeed (making headphones sound like real speakers) and SoundID Reference Headphones to calibrate them. The problem that this guy has that he is used to his professional room and speakers sounding a certain way so when he tries his headphones he finds them lacking in performance. What bothers me after watching the video is that he's not even realizing that he has to set up a crossfeed for the headphones I mean he's talking about it but doesn't try to set it up. He or anyone else can make that track sound exactly alike with the headphone maybe even better you just have to get used to it just like monitor speakers. So for all the bedroom producers who maybe don't have the money to make a expensive room room headphones are the way. Top level headphones can and will sound better than any set of mid-tier speakers in untreated and semi professional rooms.
Headphones def fatigue the ears more.
this is not at all true from any sense.. i produce, mix, master everything using headphones exclusively. It totally depends on how much u have learned their output and your analysis of frequencies using Equalizer.
Yesh its as easy as eating noodles
sorry, I messed up the number 69 )
MAKE MUSIC WITH MONITORS MASTER WITH HEADPHONES
theres been some mastering engineers telling me that sometimes they really just like using some sony mdr v6's I was blown away
Good studio monitors beat headphones, hands down.
For creative chord an key finding: headphones For mixing mastering: monitors
