So... Those SMG4 redesigns...
Little short video that's only purpose is basically to say "I'm keeping the old designs!"
If you expected me to make some commentary essay video to complain about the SMG4 redesigns... I mean I don't blame you lol it does give that vibe lol
However I know some people will want to know my opinion on them, so I'll do a big text for yall
Ok first off.. They're NOT BAD. Howeverrr they could have been a LOT better IMO
and I've already experienced that with the Saiko redesign they made months back, as I HAD seen it while it was in development like 8 months ago or something, and got confused why they tweaked it so much when it finally appeared
Of course what's most criticized is Boopkins, and to be fair he's also my least favorite lol, he just looks so... uncanny bit.ly/3TSD9pf you know the type of uncanny that would completely destroy my super gaming house in less than a second without even a single tractor 🤯🤯😱😱😱
In contrast.. You also got Bob that's very good for example (even though I think he lacks texture a bit but let's not be nitpicking lol that's not the point, as much as I'm a lil perfectionnist heh)
But what I mostly think about this whole redesign wave.. It's just not necessary in my opinion

because here Glitch is going for brand identity, and imo the way I'd do that is separate the Mario stuff from the company stuff and make a clear gap, but now that's going into the territory of "my opinion on modern SMG4" which I'd rather not get into.

My problem with the redesigns is that they don't really catch their "old feel" very well imo. If they were slightly edited/tweaked, I wouldn't really have minded even tho I don't believe it was necessary to begin with.
The problem is that they are bland and boring (with the exception of Bob, who basically just got drawn in a different artstyle with a scarf.) Ans then there's Boopkins. 🤮

It's not because of the shell, it's because his redesign looks so bland and basic, he looks llke something a 3 yr old would do in blender.
I like to think now we have two diverging SMG4 timelines, one with the redesigns and one without them. It's kinda like the awful retcon of the Sonic series where Classic Sonic is an alternate dimension Sonic instead of Sonic of the past.

Not gonna lie when I first saw Boopkins' new design I laughed so hard I almost coughed. He looked like if Microsoft Paint and Blender fused together and drew/modeled a pea with lips, eyes, hair, and limbs. So I can agree with you, its kind of weird. Though I do kind of like SMG3 & SMG4 redesigns.

Yeah, I’m not so sure about the redesigns myself. SMG4/3 I don’t really mind _too_ much(albeit it kinda just doesn’t feel like them without that classic Mario look), and they did a semi-decent job with Bob too! But we can all agree that Boopkin’s new design *_needs to die in the fire._* not _a_ fire, *THE* fire(you know which one I’m talking about)

The last SMG4 video i ever watched was the finale to the Waluigi Ark, and I have to say it is very weird seeing a 3D model for the old man instead of a PNG
I really hope you keep the old designs. As much as I like Bob’s new design, it would feel weird only having his new design and not everyone else’s new designs. Besides, seeing you keep the old models makes me happy.

I think SMG3 should've been designed as like a "Waluke" two lightning bolts for a mustache, the pink nose, the pointy ears, the Chesire grin and the blue eye shadow.

The new designs feel way too simplified/lack detail, since most of the models of Smg4 prior to the redesigns had some level of detail put into them it made the characters look generally in the same tone, but when the new models they kind of wrecked that balance so now it looks insanely obvious which character got reworked or just got added
Unfortunately the redesigns had to happen to avoid what happens in the Lawsuit Arc to happen in real life with the bad ending
Gonna be honest ... These redesigns are a hit or miss : -Bob Looks Awsome now and i agree with you : He got a scarf and his hands are now actual blades -SMG4 and SMG3 are ... ok? They don't look THAT bad... But gives them some personality to their character -Boopkins ... He looks like a ball with a face now ... Go Back pls!

It’s impossible to get used to. SMG3/4 look like reject Bob the Builders and Boopkins legit looks like one of those low-budget CGI children show characters. Bob is good though

While I don't mind them I can see why they're off putting at first Sure they have an practical reason for the redesigns, but some range from good to unrecognizable. Old Man, SMG4, and Bob look the best imo I also feel like they could've made Boopkins look more like an actual animal. Perhaps more like a bullfrog with slanted pupils, black and brown stripes along his body, noticeable webbed feet. Or since the studio is based in Australia and Boopkins has hair maybe make him more like a platypus
I respect and agree with your opinions on the redesigns, and love that you wish to keep the old ones! A lot of people (mainly fanartists) feel they *need* to make the change so it’s canon compliant, but I believe it’s so much better that you choose to use the old ones and continue your thing! In regards to which characters I would love to see more of, I believe I want to see some Wacky Wario Bros or Sonic the Derphog! But some traditional Mario Recolor fun wouldn’t be too bad either! Essentially, I’m good with whatever story or video you put out, they are all entertaining nonetheless!

Agreed, I prefer the old designs. It just feels like a sudden change. Especially since those were the designs that majority of people remember back when SMG4 started out and was starting to get popular.

the problem about the redesigns imo is the "too smooth" effect on the designs. Like 3D Mario for example, it smooth enough to fit in the universe of Gmod. Here, the redesigns is too smooth for the Gmod universe. They look like they don't belong to the right place or something, or like they're made out of weird plastic thingy. But overall, i pretty like them, Boopkins is... Yeah, terrifying, but they're fine.

To be honest, I don't mind the new designs. I tend to get use to new things rather quickly so it wasn't much of a problem for me. However, Boopkins was the only one the wasn't good. He looks like a prototype design of spike and just feels so out of place. Doesn't help that all 5 designs (including Saiko) happened in the time-span of a month.

People keep insisting that the reason of the redesigns was to avoid copyright claims on his videos when that doesn't even make sense. If that was the real intention, his "who let the chomp out?" and many other of his old videos would've been taken down already. Considering how merciless Nintendo is about copyright and how that video and smg4 blowed up in popularity; if Nintendo, of all things, hasn't taken down that video to this day, it's because they never will. The true reason why they did the redesigns? Simple, to sell figurines and plushies. Because if smg4 sold blue skinned mario then he could actually get striked by lawsuit, but if you change it to ocs instead then it's perfectly fine, so this is really just another marketing strategy to make money (hell right after the WOTFI 2022 he started selling figurines of his redesign). It's sad to see that smg4 became just another brand nowadays...

I'll be real,as soon as meggy had her redesign years back. I thought this might happen... Haven't touched smg4 content for a long time till the new splatoon vid so it was a bigass punch to the face when i saw the redesigns of smg4 and such XD
I actually kind of like the redesigns. Yeah they could have been better, but I feel like they fit the characters well, while more or less staying faithful to the old designs. Yeah I know ow boopkins is the worst, but I think what they were trying to go for was to make it look similar enough to the old look, while also trying to make him look more fish like and like he actually is jubjub's brother. Bob I felt got a glow up, since the character model he used was from the Nintendo 64 days, even when a ragdoll. Just looks like he got a graphical edit. As for smg4, it is basically a actual model of some of the artwork of himself that shows up every so often, so it fits. I get why a lot of people don't like them, but I actually enjoy them and feel they fit the characters.
I can confirm that the SMG4 and the SMG3 ones are the most cursed one in history.

I don't know if SMG4 came out with a statement on this, but I think one if 2 things on why the redesign happened: 1. Nintendo had a stick up SMG4's ass, & threatened legal action against him if they didn't do so 2. SMG4 is at least TRYING to do sonthing different for a little bit.
