  • As to the plural of Noctilux: it depends on whether you're using German (lux = measuring unit for light intensity) or Latin (lux = light) declinations. Latin: Noctilux / Noctiluces; German: Noctilux / Noctilux (plural and singular are the same). Sorry for the nerdism 😅 ... and thanks very much for the review!

  • Thanks Hugh for discussing this extraordinary lens. Compliments of course for Sigma. For enthusiasts of a small depth of field, it is interesting to know that the depth of field of the Sigma 65mm f 2 is identical to a 50mm f 1.2. In practice, these lenses have a small difference in light gathering and angle of view but a huge difference in weight, size and price. So there is something to choose from for everyone. I am a fan of the Sigma 65mm f 2 in L mount precisely because of the bokeh and subject separation.

    • Awesome. This is a point that's rarely brought up and I didn't realize it was so dramatic even across 15mm. Keep in mind that minimum focus distance is important to some. I know that part of the reason I even pull out very fast 50mm or 58mm lenses is because I want to use them SUPER close to subjects. The DOF for the 65mm at minimum focus distance is .76 cm, while the DOF for the 50mm at minimum is .40cm. may not matter for most but part of the fun of fast lenses is razor thin at very close distances, so it may be useful for some. Still not enough to make me spend $1400 for it though

    • GREAT point! You are correct: at a distance of 6’ both yield a DOF of 3.5”!

  • Thank you for the Sigma 50/1.2 video. i’m really glad to see this from Sigma even though i own both the Sony 50/1.2 and 50/1.4 GM lenses since they were introduced. I also own Sigma’s f/2 50mm and 65mm I-Series DG DN i use on the A7CR. This is because 40-50+ is my favorite focal range. Now i can consider Sigma’s newest ART series an alternative going forward. Take care.

  • I've had a few Sigma lenses that have been outstanding compared to first party lenses. The 24-70/2.8 L mount is fantastic, and the old 17-50/2.8 for crop sensors was also very impressive. The 56/1.4 is one of the best lenses I've ever owned. No wonder Canon won't let you put them on their R-series cameras.

  • Looks like a stellar lens for e-mount and L-mount shooters. I own a Lumix S5 (I) and actually I feel a little tempted, but to be honest - I don’t need a f1.2 lens. Most of the time I shoot street and travel and I rarely need something faster than, let’s say, f2.5 or 2.8. Actually I really like the Sigma contemporary i-series lenses on my S5. The 24 f3.5, the 45 f2.8 and the 90 f2.8 are awesome lenses. Small, beautiful with a real aperture ring and a great performance🤩. But hey, this f1.2 lens is kind of mouthwatering🤤.

  • I. M. P. R. E. S. S. I. V. E. Some great images here, and a very impressive looking lens! That photo of ‘the pooch,’ was just so nice and so sharp. I’m curious as to whether these newer lenses give up any of that sought after ‘character’ in the pursuit of perfection? Love how You break things down Hugh, and never fail to come away impressed. Your Photographic knowledge notwithstanding; I think I could listen to You talk on about various patches of paint drying on a wall! 😯😃 Please stay safe and best to You and Claudia.

    @georgedavall9449@georgedavall9449Ай бұрын
    • Thank you George! As to your musing about “character:” it depends upon one’s definition of “character.” A precise definition of lens character would probably incorporate the notions that 1) “character” is a subjective thing; 2) it refers to what an optical engineer would likely consider the distance between technical perfection and what the person opining about character finds pleasing DUE to that distance. 😊🖖🏻

      @3BMEP@3BMEPАй бұрын
    • @@3BMEP You're Welcome! Really good points taken! Photographers are always chasing after ‘character,’ bokeh, micro contrast, and other so called features in a lens. You made a very good point on what the optical engineer is considering in the design. I’m happy if I get a decently sharp lens that isn’t decentered! And I am content on focusing on chasing after that ‘one image.’ But that is just me! I’m penning this on one cup of coffee, and after re writing it several times, I’ve settled on this. 🙄 Take care! 😊📷🇮🇱🇺🇸🖖

      @georgedavall9449@georgedavall9449Ай бұрын
    • @@3BMEP No that's a poor definition of "character". "Technical perfection" as a term depends on one's definition of "perfection" just as much as "character" does. Character of a lens would simply be the attributes that render the various aspects of optical conveyance in a way appealing to one's preferences while still being acceptably sharp or better.

    @jenklanify@jenklanifyАй бұрын
    • I would. I already have two APO Summicron SL lenses that are reference standards (35 and 90), and I have a relatively small and light Sigma 65/2 for when I want a "normal" FOV without cropping. The bonus is that it will give me an identical DOF at 6' to a 50 at 1.2. Bottom line: I RARELY need to go to 1.2; 35 and 90 are my bread and butter lenses; and if I NEEDED 1.2 (as I will in June for a wedding inside a dim chapel), the Sigma makes more sense from light gathering, size, weight and cost perspectives than the Summilux SL. But hey: that's just me. :)
