  • I love this. No language, no barriers. Just those of us who love the mountains, the snow, the freedom of camping. Good food, a bottle of wine and just enough warmth to get by. All that is needed, thank you for sharing.

  • The lack of any white noise in this makes me want to do the same thing. Drive to a location where there's no sound pollution, just natural sounds. Relax, enjoy a good wine, meal, and silence. Its a therapy that i think many would really enjoy, should they ever experience it.

  • My husband actually went through this once. He was a traveling salesman in a caravan of other salesmen passing through the mountains and they got caught in a snowstorm and had to stop for the night. Visibility was so bad that they had unknowingly stopped right before the whole caravan went off a cliff. They survived by huddling together for warmth in a few of the vans.

  • Thank you. After learning the best way to stay warm (knee hi nylon socks!) And eating meat and carbs (fuel for the body), plus staying hydrated, it brought me many fond memories. If you layer your sleeping area with rugs and blankets, and maybe newspaper, to block the air, plus totally change into clean undergarments before sleeping, you will stay warmer. I camped in -22°F comfortably, as long as there was no cold air around my bedding or in my sleeping bag. I kept my clean clothes around my feet, and it kept my feet warm and I dressed in warm things in the morning.

  • This reminds me very much of Colorado mountain winter camping in my old VW camper van. I was in an unprotected area and the winds of a 2 day snowstorm blew so hard for so long that when it was over my engine compartment was packed solid with snow, and I had to spend nearly an hour digging out the engine compartment before I could drive the 50 yards back to the highway. The drive itself was very easy because the wind had blown the ground almost completely bare of snow. After that I carried cardboard to duct tape over the vents in the engine compartment. Yes, the rig had been physically rocking during the storm. Colorado winds can be brutal. A micro-bus with chains on is amazing in snow, with enormous ground clearance, and the engine weight over the drive wheels.

January 1975 we ere hit three times. Pictures of Dad making a path from house to barn shows the drift dwarfed the tractor. Spring sun made quick work of snow. Lots of Ducks and Geese spent time in the swamp .Made rafts and used fallen branches to move our creation.

That's where I have to get involved with search and rescue teams putting us in danger. If you feel the need to do this, test the equipment in your back yard before putting yourself in a situation where your poor decision puts others at risk trying to save you.

  • I had a 1968 Volkswagen pop top Camper van just like that. Mine was blue. It was my wife and I favorite car. We bought it in pristine condition from an old couple in the seventies. The pop up top made it sleep 6. it had a built in refrigerator and sink with running water powered by hand pump. It had110 outlets. It was all professionally done new. I had the engine worked on and it never ran right again but it would have been easily worth it to replacing the engine. They were notorious for not getting enough air in the side scoops to keep the engine cool enough. It ran beautiful until it took a crap. I'd buy it back in a second. When you get that special car never sell it.

  • A nice warm van at night with the curtains half drawn, moving ever so slightly from the howling, gale force winds outside, that manage to sneak through the tiniest of crack openings around the window frames. The strong hiss of the wind adds even more to the cold, winter blizzard ambience. You only have 1 very dim ceiling light which emits just enough light for cooking, reading, writing, etc. On a small table in the corner sits a very good quality Technics turntable, with a vnyl LP turning round and round, whose stylus soaks up the delicate sound waves from the grooves of the record. The sounds are electrically sent through the thinnest and most delicate of wires through the stereo amp which calibrate the sounds which are then sent through quality speaker cables directly the sound engineered speakers themselves. The result is the beautiful marriage of instrumental an vocal sounds so warm, clear, and extremely euphorically pleasing to human ears. Jazz is surely the perfect music to listen to in this cold, winter, white snow environment - in this case the Miles David quartet. A nice little meal cooks slowly on the stovetop burner exuding the most pleasing fragrance which permeates the whole van. Tonight's choice was succulent beef stew. A nice bottle of red just waiting to be opened. The small TV screen was up on the corner of the ceiling; the volume was on low, but just audible enough to hear the evening news about tonight's blizzard conditions, and urging people to stay at home. And above all else, stay safe. Large parts of the state were already without power. The temperature had already reached a record low of -30 degrees celsius. After dinner and a nice glass of red was perfect, as Jackson reads his novel and sips his wine...Every minute or so the whole van rocks from side to side from the hurricane force winds. But he isn't worried because he knows that his vehicle is strong, rugged, and perfectly engineered for these rough and tumble mountainous parts. He had all of his necessities and then some. Plenty of food and fresh water, blankets, pillows, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, flares, and a special emergency rescue radio. He also has a couple of high powered rifles, a couple of good handguns and plenty of amo. Jackson also made sure to bring at least 4 high powered flashlights too. In short, he was prepared for any eventuality. Tonight's movie of choice was the 70s classic 'The Planet of the Apes' starring Charlton Heston. And so the stage was set for what would be a perfect camping night in his really comfy, cozy, and strong new van, with all the bells and whistles. He even brought his much loved guitar. Come hell or high-water, Jackson was perfectly prepared for a very comfy and cozy stormy winter night. Most importantly, he felt safe and prepared - help could be there in 20 minutes give or take if needed. He had his radios, phones, computers, protection, etc. Anyway, the storm raged on, the van continued to rock every minute or so, the ice pellets were hitting the windows, the inside of the van was nicely dim lit, and the Planet of the Apes was about to start. Jackson had his cold beer in a mug, and was as snug as a bug in his cozy, warm bed covered in soft, thick covers. Later, he would sleep like baby in his small pocket of Paradise and would look forward to a delicious breakfast of bacon and eggs with fruit, orange juice and freshly brewed Brazilian coffee! What else could he ask for?

  • Love your video, I have been wintering in rv's for several years. Some tips to help you survive: 1. Alcohol lowers your body temperature. You can freeze to death and not wake up. Except vodka, if you put vodka in water, juice etc it can keep it from freezing solid to -25c. 2. Everything dehydrated or powder is best for food (oatmeal, powdered milk, powdered peanut butter, powdered/dehydrated eggs with bacon, powdered energy drinks, etc then just mix with water). Definitely water in metal containers can be heated. 3. Biggest heat loss is windows. If you can get bubble wrap for windows and spray soapy water on window before putting bubble wrap you still get light but you get insulation. Alcohol sprayed on windshield helps with ice forming but highly flammable so save for outside. Black fleece in wondows like curtains helps with insulation but also warm up van when sunny (leave a gap below and above so warm air rises into van on top while pulling cold air from bottom through convection) I call it solar thermal warming. 4. If you have a metal cup that fits into stove, you can fill it with alcohol or hand sanitizer gel and light it for a flame without smoke and no wood. 5. If you put fireplce bricks, dry rocks, or pizza stone on top of small wood stove, it will heat up and you can warm up your bed or the rest of the van with it. 6. If you can find shrink wrap CLEAR plastic, aluminum tape and a garage or truck wash you can warm up the van then you can apply it on the inside and outside of windows and it is great insulation. See my videos for info. 7. Disposable heating pads inside the foot area of your bed/sleeping bag are awesome. Also in boots and gloves. 8. Foot sweat is your enemy. Your feet get warm, they sweat between toes then freeze with could lead to pain and frostbite. Change socks, keep feet dry (especially between toes), if your feet are warm, you are warm... if your feet freeze the rest of your body will get hyperthermia (shovering) before death. Better no socks and dry feet than wet socks in van. 9. On emergency use Hoffman's deep breathing to increase oxygen and circulation. 10. Layers is best. Make sure to cover head when sleeping with knit hat. I have woken up to a swollen upper lip and swollen nose (signs of frostbite) as that is what was sticking out of my blankets. 11. Plastic sheeting (painter's plastic) under your blankets and above you (in a tent fashion) will insulate your body heat, condensation will make upper sheet dripping wet so that is why you don't want it touching you) . 12. Mr Buddy is a good propane heater I use. It has a low oxygen sensor and if it tips over it shuts off. Don't mix flame with propane otherwise if the propane had a leak it could explode. 13. Fire extinguisher is awesome but might freeze in winter. 14. Need carbon monoxide monitor and fresh air from outside. Even a small stove can kill. For more tips see my videos.

  • This lovely European fellow isn't pretending this is a survival situation. He is in a park next to an apparent public loo, with picnic tables and somebody else's excited pooch running through in the morning. He came well prepared with food, wine, and cooking equipment. It isn't that much snow -- in the morning he fixes his wipers and drives off! I found the whole thing relaxing.

  • I owned and camped in one of these 20 years ago in Northern Canada as a forester; very difficult to start in the cold, even more difficult to steer and control. I often had to place a coleman stove under the oil pan to warm the engine up in order to start it- made for scary times in the frozen wilderness- still cool though!

  • Nice VW bus!. I've done a lot of research on these, and from the looks of it, yours is a second generation camper from the Brazilian plant. I know it's a second gen because the front window is one long piece instead of 2 split windows. I can tell from the position of the front indicator lights that your bus was made after 1973. Finally, I can tell it came from the Brazilian plant because the Brazilians built 2nd gen buses using some 1st gen parts, like how yours has the 2 side doors rather than the german single sliding door, and the small back hatch, compared to the german one, which is wider and has a bigger window. Also, another factor telling me it's Brazilian is the hubcaps, which have the VW logo raised more than the german version. It's a really cool bus!
