During an exclusive one-on-one, French President Emmanuel Macron opens up to CNN’s Jake Tapper about his theory on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s mindset. Macron explains why he believes Russian resentment and isolation due to Covid-19 possibly played a role in Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine.

But some countries/people ARE on the good side, and some ARE on the bad side. Russia is on the bad side - no, actually, Russia IS the bad side. As an Englishman who has lived in Germany for 56 years and speak both English and German fluently, I have always been disturbed about many people here are reluctant to speak English correctly. There is term for German English, Denglish. Even in schools they are taught incorrect pronunciation. Thed worst example is saying e for an a, so a cat becomes a cet, bad becomes bed etc.Yet if people listen to singers often enough they hear the correct pronunciation. I worked for Xerox and one time when a representative from the US visited Düsseldorf on an important matter, I had to interpret because he could not fully understand Denglish. I could not agree more with Mr. Macron's last point. It's easy to point fingers at specific nations but pretty much everybody signed up for cooperation and dependence on each other as the best deterrent for conflicts. Couldn't agree more, very impressed.
Macron is very impressive. I've never heard him in an interview (I don't speak French), so it's the first time I listen to a full interview he gives, ava I think he says some very reasonable things and, more importantly, he manages to, on the one hand, not be unnecessarily offensive while, on the other hand, say what's on his mind. Kinda refreshing from a politician, if you ask me.
I like that he tries to Understand Putin's mindset while at the same time pointing out this does not mean it's an excuse. This is very important. We must allow ourselves to try to understand why someone else does something we don't like, and not just call them crazy or evil. Understanding the mindset and reasons is much more valuable.
That's his whole thing, he's trying to sound reasonable but actually never says anything of substance. Ask anyone in France about his political line and no one would be able to tell you what it is, because he doesn't have one.
@@bretonfou7046 I mean internally hes not great but for the wider European project hes pushing the right ideas. Closer Federal project, a proper European millitary (man that would smash anyone given enough scale) and in general the idea that our future is together against, or alongside the other empires, not as their vassals. Clearer vision than any weak and wobbly brexshite self serving nonsense we get here in the Uk.
@@shacklock01 He’s the only one pushing for Federal Europe, no one wants a « European army » except him. Germany recently added a 100 billion euros to their military budget, they want to become the « largest military in Europe » and I’m willing to bet a good half of that budget will go into the US weapons industry. You say he doesn’t want us to be vassals anymore, meanwhile we’re still NATO members going along with everything Biden says and does. The war in Ukraine already cost us a fortune, imagine the shitstorm we’ll have when China invades Taiwan. Don’t get me started on his internal politics, or the lack thereof.

Great interview, love the accent of president 😊
Good speech 🙏
I think one and very important aspeckt is respect. Its difficult to negotiate if you lack it. Nowadays expecially In social media you dont find it. But I wonder if you find it between the people and government officials.
Macron is all about respect Search videos: “Mali Minister tears France a new one during UN speech calling Macron Government an Evil criminal junta.”
It's really refreshing to hear a politician talk conversationally and rationally. He says "look, not everyone thinks the way we think, we have to respect that." If only we had that mindset before we tried to force democracy on countries that don't want it. But now, we have a chance to work through differences. I'm cautiously optimistic.
Agreed - his emphasis on respect for India, China, Africa and even Russia was striking; I can’t remember hearing a western world leader speak like that before. I feel quite embarrassed because it never even occurred to me until Biden’s speech the other day that Africa has no representatives at the highest levels of the UN. That’s SO messed up. Also, I think that the twin failures of Iraq and Afghanistan have taught the USA and UK a valuable lesson regarding the imposition of democracy: it cannot work unless the people want it, and understand / work out how to make it work for their culture and society. It’s pretty mad that it’s taken many of us until now to realise this, seeing as the USA needed two wars almost a century apart before their democracy fully stabilised, and in the UK it took us over 700 years to get from first steps (Magna Carta) to full democracy. And even now, people’s freedoms and protections are not fully secure in either country. I was taught as a child to see the world as being divided between ‘free’ and ‘unfree’. I now realise that was wrong. It’s not a binary divide: it’s a sliding scale. As January 6th so terrifyingly demonstrated, the scale can tip towards ‘unfree’ VERY fast. We’ve all got to participate in our democracies and exercise our rights as much as we can, or they will be taken from us. Sorry that got so long - was thinking out loud as it were.
i am sure, people in every country wants democracy, unless they are brainwashed by some propoganda, like in north korea. Its the tyrant leaders of those countries, who has stolen all the power and money of their country, that dont want democracy, because then they will loose it. How could a saint human being not want to have rights?
We wouldn't have to force democracy on those countries if they had appropriate human rights laws. Plain and simple.

@@stan-malogesnel8397 In no way was I talking about his policies. He's well spoken for someone not speaking his native tongue, explained his thoughts on his interactions with Putin well and gave us Americans another perspective. He didn't mention French politics nor do we hear about it much here. I'm sorry to hear that is happening in France, as we have identical issues. My comment was only addressing his eloquence and alternate perspective. Politically it sounds like he is doing what politicians do worldwide. 🤷

You don’t give recognition and respect to a bully. He only sees this as a weakness.
I see France in general as a fair country. They opposed Invasion of Iraq as they did of Ukraine. A moral high-ground that the UK and the US can’t claim.
BUT...they sold Iraq missiles, and materiel for the nuclear reactor. They would sell knives to Jason from "Nightmare from Elm Street" to get Oil!
Are you saying that the UK and the USA "wanted and supported" the Russian invasion of Ukraine??? You are either joking or insane !!!!

Il a parlé bien anglais...c'est impressionante ... 😻
It’s all about money and energy. Turns out Donbas and Crimea is sitting on more natural gas and oil than Norway. Why doesn’t this keep getting mentioned!
no, Russia has more natural resources than most other countries, it is the largest country in the world, Putin's war is about power, he is behaving like a jealous ex-husband who can not accept that his wife left him and he has no more power over her
Probably becuse it's not true. Norway has over 5 billion barrels of oil and gas in proven reserves, more than a 1000 times that of the entierty of Ukraine. There are oil and gas in Crimea in particular, but nowhere near the level you seem to think.
your right about resources but wrong about gas. Donbas has a huge amount of Coal. Plus the other regions voting this week make up the bulk of grain production from Ukraine, so yes they are resource right, just not gas rich.
It's certainly astonishing what an all powerful, resentful, aggrieved leader can do to destroy the world.
Start digging bunkers.
