Game of Thrones Season 2 Special Features Creating the Battle of Blackwater Bay (HD)
Watching these making-of's makes me realize the actors have the easiest job
Not at all. But they certainly get the most attention.
Not really, though yes a lot of people do work just as hard or harder
CCTV9 why they dont show behind the scene when they fuck xD
CCTV9 exactly !! yet they get all the recognition
"Everyone would do it if it were easy." _-- Tyrion Lannister_
The guy who plays Ser Davos is as, if not more lovable than Ser Davos himself.
He was born to play Ser Davos
He's the best in dog soldiers lol
@@ShadowQrow Joffrey did an excellent job of making people hate him and he's actually a really sound guy in real life. Joffrey's character was awful anyway but the actor played him really well. He really was a cunt!
Jaylieb Piatt
@@himynamelscolin yeah he actually plays a good villain him and Neil Marshall must of had a Funtime filming this
i live in northern ireland and drive past this everyday
I dare u to sneak in there and act like stannis
@@marlonmurcia7542 you know this is 2 years before you posted it
"As you can see, we're on a large portion of the budget" XD
Amazingly this actually happened in real life. In the 7th century, the Arabs tried attacking Constantnople via sea. The Byzantines launched Greek fire, real life's wildfire and burned the enemy fleet.
Just by watching the finished product I never fully apreciated about how much work goes into this sort of things. Amazing to see this behind the scenes footage and it gives me a whole new level of respect for the art behind all of it.
Wow you feel proud?
Damn he didn't reply
That Liam Cunningham....he is just so passionate about his character and this series.. doing his own stunts....the perfect man for one of my favorite characters! And serving the one true king of westeros :P
Look at that sword master/ stunt performer, C. C. Smiff. He looks like Stannis Baratheon's doppleganger!
The Stannis double is spot-on. Goddamn.
what stannis double?
Max Tan watch entire thing
***** lol XD
when tyrion passes out before the battle even had begun and then wakes up when it's all over, i actually thought wow this is so original, it's the way the writers are telling us how tyrion had 'experienced' the battle. we see such an important event through the eyes of the main character who funnily enough misses everything. brilliant blablabla... now i have been told it was actually just a cut. lol
+ciuffoZanetti4 Well, not exactly original either. This is what happens to Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit book. He get's knocked out right before the Battle of Five Armies and the story skips to him waking up. But I think it's appropriate a dwarf pays homage to another famous midget!
That wasn't the Battle at Blackwater. It was when he was put in the caravan with his mountain folk. It wasn't much better or believable in the book.
leftyfourguns j
ok how did he pass out? he got hit by a hammer!! not exactly passing out! and more so knocked out!
10:51 is the funniest thing I've ever seen. They are using a prop shield to keep the water off the camera man. Very resourceful.
I absolutely love how this was created...old fashioned massive, painstakingly designed sets combined with state of the art special effects. Perfect blend of the two. When television/movies rely too heavily on CGI, the result often looks too much like a video game and takes me out of the story.
OMG. As great as the actors are, and the are absolutely great, the special effects people should have the biggest homes, nicest cars and the fattest bank accounts. Can you imagine coming to HBO and saying, "We need $12 million dollars for a fake boat or for fake arrows or whatever? The amount of trust that goes into this thing must be amazing.
"darkness hides your sins" haha i like that
The Battle of Blackwater was glorious
Ok euron😂
HBO needs to increase their budget 10 fold !!! On the upcoming seasons .....
Budget and more importantly, time Their budget is already pretty big, but they need more time. I love GoT, both the books and TV series, however since this is a visual adaptation, it saddens me knowing that there were so many missed opportunities to use the format to its fullest. Breaking Bad has incredible shot compositions even making entire scenes in one long take or having the camera positioned in a way to express an experience, either visceral or logically. Obviously BB has a much smaller budget and smaller scale therefore greater freedom to express visual art but just imagine that with GoT, making the series 12+ episodes per season and not restricted to making a season per year.
@@RacinZilla003 "They need more time". Man you totally called it. They crammed in too much in season 7 & 8 and 8 in particular was a disaster. Still good for a tv show but not up to the standards of season 1-4.
😂😂listen here, i am from future, they must have invested on the storyline😂
Watching this makes me really want to watch the whole battle again lol
After having appeared as an extra on a few tv shows, I can honestly say I would have LOVED to have been an extra for this battle! :D
Taylor Riley how much do extras get paid?
SPFrobber They usually volunteer
Taylor Riley hey man I know this is an old comment but how would you recommend becoming an extra
@@adammanson9244 nah they can paid, you get more as union
Talking about production value. The GoT cast & crew really deliver amazing quality for a TV-show!
Thank you HBO for allowing these amazing people to bring life to these books.
The guy with the barrel making waves did an amazing job, every time they show him he's doing very little work but the effects brilliant
You can tell the main stunt guy was Stannis's body double haha, he looks just like him
From meticulously adding burn marks to the wall from braziers to forgetting to remove a plastic cup from a scene...
Very nice to see them giving the credit to the various people that deserve it. Wonderful shows and movies are made by more than the stars.
Got is already amazing but imagine how much more they could do without worrying about a budget. Like when full out battles with dragons actually happen it will be interesting in how they are able to pull it off
I think that one major difference is that, during the shooting of this episode (so before Season 2 had even begun to air), GoT wasn't quite the solidified smash-hit success juggernaut that it is now, with three whole seasons under its belt. So I feel like by the time they get to those crazy battles with dragons and whatnot, HBO will be more inclined to give them a bigger budget, as the show's popularity is only increasing. Either way, what they managed to do here was impressive as heck, and I trust that they'll manage the huge scenes in the future just fine.
I think there's a certain charm to making do with what you have. I thought the battle sequence was perfect, and if a change in budget, even an increase, would have changed that, I don't think it would have been a good thing.
Probably would have blown it on making everything CGI like they did on the Hobbit (which made it pretty shit to watch)
Joseph Violet ..... no
Mads Stays Noided you are right my friend, there is a certain charm to productions that have low or tight budgets. They put more care and love into their work. Like a poor person content with their life style. Give someone like that a big bag of money and they will spend it vigorously. Some of the greatest scenes and films have been made with limited budgets. Star Wars A New Hope, Serenity, LOTR and many others. It all goes back to Shakespeare: "Brevity is the soul of wit."
I pray for more of these for future episodes this was a pleasure to watch.. amazing.
***** why spoil?
Lily Holloway Davies The books and the name of the episode
this is why i will watch almost anything on hbo, no matter what it is about. it's just the best quality television.
This comment has not aged well
It is better described in the books. Loras Tyrell donned Rely's armor and people thought him to be Renly's ghost returned from the dead to take vengance on Stannis. It afterwards became a small joke.
Not loras, his btother
I LOVE seeing all the work and detail that goes into scenes like this. Totally appreciate the staff for doing all of this.
I've always imagined the large war galleys such as the Fury, King Robert's Hammer etc as being much larger than that, but I still think the scene was well made considering their budget.
Wait the guy who did dog soldiers directed this know wonder it was so good
Unsung heros have always been the ones behind the camera, the crew and director no matter how little the project is.
Actually it’s the stunt man they made every thing look good getting arrows shot into them getting set on fire yes I know they have protective gear but sometimes it’s doesn’t work
The sheer amount of ingenuity, creativity and hard work that went into making this battle scene is absolutely incredible! Makes me appreciate the show that much more knowing how hard they have to work to bring it to life.
Kerr Logan's voice is soo soothing! 6:22
From the perspective of a game developer this is inspiring. As a Game of Thrones fan, this is absolutely amazing. What a fantastic show and crew.
God damnit, I love this show just so MUCH.
Do you still love it in 2019? 😂😂😂
@@MsMaryPatricia I sure do
Watching all the hard work that goes into it makes you appreciate the show even more.
When Tyrion got slashed, I was so scared my favorite character had died. That happens a lot in this show.
One of the best episodes
thank god the 9th episode with the battle of the blackwater was written by grrm and not D&D,the would fck stannis up
If only you knew just how bad things...
@@Wallace43266 oh boy
I never realized the amount of work that goes into scenes like this. Wow.
Best battle of the serie
just incredible!
It's amazing how these guys have put all this together and make a outstanding show, personally i'd be a lil nervous getting shot with a arrow even with the plate and wood block...
gahhh, im going thru post show depression. WE NEED MORE EPISODES
Being in the extra cast is already a blessed let alone a main stars
I love the cinematography of the show. Really brings everything in the books to life. All the hard work and details they put in, pay off. =)
Finally, GRRM gets to write an episode where he can have horses AND Stonehenge.
You guys are amazing, from top, to bottom, you’ve made a masterpieces, that can be re-watched, over and over again, with amazement. Thank you sooo much! Only problem is, what can follow?? No film, nor any other series will come close to Game of Thrones! Absolutely fantastic.
Wish they had the giant chain in the book.
I remember when I first saw this I was like wow but as each season goes they just keep toping there last battle the final battle is going to be nuts
Was it truly nuts?
Liam Cunningham does a amazing job as davos.
Stannis! 25:14 Epic
"Any man dies with a clean sword I'll rape his fucking corspe" Top three best lines in the whole show
We don't see many Jack Gleason (not sure how to spell his last name) interviews, it'snice to see him
So cool. I loved that you guys interviewed every single effect department individually.
movie magic at work..simply amazing :)
Dude they deserve so much more than the actord
Very impressive.
best combination of practical prosthetic effects and cgi iv seen was blade 2 with the reapers, shit was seamless
"He is still alive. That says a lot in this show."
Thanks for the upload! :)
Thanks, must be an impressive set, I thought It was a real place. Just shows how good the set designers are.
This is simply amazing!!!
Definitely made by people of Gog and Magog. You guys are geniuses.
The Mannis shot right at 2:09 XD
anyone else love 28:52 ?
Brilliant.
Lannister Empire... I like the sound of that.
THE MANNIS HAVE A DOUBLE !!!
The DOUBBIS HAS MANLE!!!
It is a lot of Hard Work.
Amazing!
Realistically, Davos would have just smuggled the army of Stannis into King’s Landing and taken it like Cyrus the Great took Babylon. He was familiar with the docks and with Flea Bottom, after all. If he could sneak into the capital in Season 7, he could have taken the capital in Season 2 for Stannis.
I think the Battle of Blackwater Bay maybe the more realistic of Game of Thrones battles: no idiotic decisions made by commanders, straightforward assault with little in the way of fantastical elements (really it’s just the wildfire) and the story goes to the different viewpoints of characters throughout the battle.
Actors got the easiest job, gets the most attention and largest piece of the pie.
+sharpEAGLES Welcome to the film industry mate, it's even easier being an extra though, you don't have to remember any lines
Then become one?
sharpEAGLES not true. I work in the film industry and work closely with the actors and i can say before working in the industry, i used to think that but after working with them, i can say it's really not a piece of cake as we all think. It's a very physical job as well and doing it over and over again every take, it can get pretty draining. And remember the normal hours on set is at least 10 hours, at least! And add the pressure of delivering a good performance that the producers, director especially audience will buy, otherwise, the efforts of the crew, everyone who worked hard on the set will go to waste. And it takes a great deal of imagination for actors to do vfx and green screen. Their acting has to reflect that too. It's not easy
Not to mention the fact that they are the ones who will get torn apart by the public if it isn't good. No-one calls the stunt coordinator a dumb slut on the internet.
sharpEAGLES exactly
Still the best scene in the series
Nope, Hardhome.
That was pretty good, it relied a bit on shaky cam and other zombie movie tropes though
Battle of the bastards.
BotB had some of the best CGI of the series, but the battle from a story perspective was a complete clusterfuck. None of the northerners would have rallied behind a commander as foolish as Jon Snow.
True, Jon Snow racing towards the Bolton forces through anger- as if he was going to get anywhere near Ramsey- was pretty unbelievable, but the long lens compression of the cavalry marching towards him was very good camera work. I think Hitchcock was the first to use this type of effect in the film Vertigo, where he zoomed in whilst pulling the camera back to create the dizzy vertigo effect of changing aspect ratios.
The battle is over, we have won!
I heard the Battle of Blackwater Bay cost $50 million to produce. And that was half the budget for the entire second season. I'm betting future battles will become a lot more expensive.
***** how do you know that?
***** It was a lot longer than 5-10 min. It was more like 35min, maybe longer. Most of the episode was action.
LOL, you fucking idiot, it cost only 8$ million, not 50$ million.
Well, that was polite.
For the record, though, 'Blackwater' as a whole only cost 1/3rd more than the usual episode.
Battle of the Bastards, hands down
Jon Snow is not bastard you stupid ignorant fuck
@@user-tm4br8pf3n jesus christ he is not referring to there actual stances. Ramsay Bolton was legitemised before he killed his father but the name of the battle is the battle of the bastards. As referred to by the cast and the show and literally everyone involved you ignorant fuck.
@@user-tm4br8pf3n John Snow isn't a bastard. He is a stupid shit who gave up the North because he fell in love with his own aunt.
But still this is great! :) thx for the upload!
more effort was put into this scene than in all 3 star wars prequels combined
I have this on my disc but, yaknow, I'm here now might as well watch it.
Oh my god. I am so fangirling right now xD
As a stagehand, working for HBO must be truly a fucking delight. So jelly.
watching here easier than inserting disc
I LUUUUUUUUUUUUV GAME OF THRONES
Do you still love it in 2019? 😂😂😂
7:37 ,,Not bad" :D
Everything done in the dark will be brought to the light
The night is dark and full of terrors
I just realized that the main characters are the only ones that don't wear helmets
08:07 i like this actor... and i hope he has a good bodyguard
Yes, it's so easy to create realistic, high res CG that doesn't break the viewer's immersion instantly.
WOW!
Best spoiler ever!!!
Cant get my blu ray for another two weeks! thanks for the cheeky upload
Wow, a lot of British and Irish people involved in this show ... guess they needed the best in the world :p
LOL I just noticed that too!
