Darkest Dungeon is a famously difficult game, and may chase away potential players with these seemingly unsurmountable hurdles of getting started.
I found a few key reddit posts, and other stray tips that were shared with anyone looking to improve their overall game. I asked their permission, and attempted to synthesize that wealth of knowledge into a single package that could hopefully benefit players of any skill level!
It's simply a game I love. And with the upcoming sequel, and constant sales and deals on the original game to encourage new players, I wanted to do my part to share I game I truly love!

  • Excellent advice from the comments (will update when I can) 1. 2:47 Blight is common in the Ruins with the DLCs only. For the base-game, Bleed is actually more common. 2. 2:47 I've seen many different recommendations on how you should supply your party. I tried to keep it super generic, so you can experiment, and create a loadout that best suits you. Eg. Some players recommend more Shovels for the Cove, or that keys are more valuable than shovels. Use my list as a starting point, and work to refine it to your playstyle! 3. 13:49 the Stun resist was patched, and is now 50%. If you DO stun them twice in a row, their stun resist increased by 100 4. 15:14 The stall timer was updated. If 2 rounds elapsed, OR if the player uses two "stalling skills", with 2 or fewer enemies -> reinforcements will be summoned. Your heroes will warn you of coming reinforcements (eg. "do not toy with this one"). Using two damaging dealing skills in one round will reset the Stall Timer. 5. 17:34 Apparently this advice came before "Gather the Blood" missions were added, which made blood management *much* less stressful. In light of this, players these days tend to recommend focusing on either the Cartographer's Camp, for bonus loot and easier dungeon crawling, or the Granary to alleviate food requirements. 6. Eldrich is the most common enemy type, so quirks that give negatives/positives to them are the most debilitating/powerful 7. Some people apparently *really* like the Bank. I made my own money-making recommendations in-video. But if you don't want to force that party composition, then exploring the Bank is a viable option. Invest up to 200k in it early on, and forego spending money on your heroes where you can. Soon you'll have an extra 10k per mission. 8. Quirk management is key for longterm playthroughs. Save your money, and match items to curios to remove random quirks: Ruins: Torches on Scrolls (random -quirk) Weald: Holy water on Effigy (random +quirk) Cove: Herbs on Coral (random -quirk) 9. Special Event missions have a special symbol, and will trigger a town event upon completion. These are generally worth attempting. 10. Some players recommend ACC is your #1 stat priority. It depends on your playstyle. I've had my best luck with SPD focus. Check out Vincent Cavanagh's comment for a breakdown of why they recommend ACC.

    • Note that there is no perfect way to play this game. I don't disagree with most alternate pitches users have given throughout the comments. But there are SO many viable ways to approach Darkest Dungeon that it was impossible to describe every strategy out there. I focussed on the advice of players whos playstyle matched well with my own, as well as a few nuggets I learned along the way. This is NOT the only (or objectively "best) way to play the game and succeed!! I'd recommend combing some of the top comments for alternate strategies to what I outlined in the video, or downloading something like the Darkest Companion App if you want to *really* take it to the next level

    • I was curious, you seem to value speed very highly. I don't know the name off hand but i remember there was a disease that gave speed while losing accuracy i think. The ratio was like 3 speed and -5% accuracy. Would you think that could be a disease worth keeping?

    • The best stats are Accuracy, Speed, then Scouting. At champion enemy’s dodge can be ridiculously high. Crit is always better than raw damage % because critting removes stress, & some enemies (ex: Swine Skiver) must die ASAP. Really good guide for a foundation. A creator named ShuffleFM has made dozens of guides & is also a great source for information.

  • Great video. Just a few additional tips for any new players watching. 1:The number 1 biggest tip I can give is as soon as you arrive in town after finishing the old road mission is to upgrade your stagecoach so that you get 4 new heroes every week. Your 4 standard heroes might be in rough shape after the first ruins mission so this will give you more options to start out with. 2:You are extremely unlikely to find any food in the ruins so bring plenty. 3: Quirk management is one of the most important (and expensive) aspects in the game and is vital to success in a prolonged playthrough. You can however save tons of cash by using specific items on dungeon curios. 3(b): Take extra torches in the warrens to use on scrolls (removes random negative quirk) Take an extra holy water or 2 for the Weald to use on an effigy (random positive Quirk) As stated in the video always bring a few herbs in the cove to use on Coral (removes random negative quirk) You can check the quirks of heroes in the stagecoach before you add them to your roster. Be very very wary of any hero who has the negative quirk Compulsive, Curios, and Kleptomaniac. These are the absolute WORST QUIRKS IN THE GAME as they will give the hero a high chance to forcibly interact with any hallway curio (and steal the loot in Kleptomaniacs case). If your favorite hero gets one of those 3 quirks REMOVE IT IMMEDIATLY. 4;Boss missions always reward a very rare trinket. I'd recommend unlocking each region boss as quickly as possible to increase your weekly options for a powerful early game trinket and wait until a good one pops up. Noteworthy trinkets are: Plague doctors Blasphemous vial Grave robbers Raider talisman (only in Warrens boss missions) Occultist Demon cauldron Focus ring. 5: Keep a lookout for special event missions. These will have a special symbol and will trigger a town event upon completion. Ones to look out for are: All saints day in the ruins (makes all activity in the Abbey free the following week) Bumper crop in the Warrens (free provisions for your next mission) Caregivers convention (Sanitarium is free the following week) This one is especially worth going after since you will be able to heal a diseased player AND remove and/or lock in a positive quirk for free. That's about all I can think of atm. If you read all of that and have any other questions I'd be happy to answer. Over 1,200 hours of experience I'm happy to share

    • Hi, thanks for the valuable tips :) Could you elaborate on the Torch Usage a little bit? I read some players do “dark runs” where they don’t use any torches and I was wondering how you manage stress if you do that as no torch increases Loot but also stress build-up if I am correct. In my case (started playing the game 2 days ago) I just always use a torch whenever I see the Red Stress Info on the Torch Mouseover so that it goes away.

      @maximusmagic3793@maximusmagic37932 жыл бұрын
    • @@maximusmagic3793 At low torch you get much better loot and a higher chance to crit, but receive far more stress and chance of being crit. It is a really high risk high reward game mechanic that I wouldn't recommend until your second or even third playthrough tbh. However you don't have to do entire playthroughs based on it. You can always just do a no light run if you have a party that you feel can do well in low light (crusader and jester are great for healing stress). Biggest danger I'd say though is that if you aren't scouting you may be surprised a lot (meaning your party gets randomly shuffled on turn 1) so if doing a low or no light run you'll want to try and avoid heroes who are very reliant on being in a certain position like Leper or Arbalest. One little trick you can do though (especially with boss fights) is when you know you're about to win you can snuff out the torch before the battle ends for better loot. Sorry for the wall of text. On break at work lol. hope it helps!

    • I've entered a medium cove with a very "meh" hellion (deadly / curious, calm and fragile). I've found 3 corals in this round. At the end, my hellion had no bad quirks and gained slugger as good quirk. So i can just confirm this tip.

    • Yes! Using the environment & know what it does before hand is a must. First save I played was Radiant. Their is this shrine which I forgot what it’s called. Regardless when you put a torch on it you get teleported to this hard boss fight. This spawned for me on the very first level!! Lmao. I guess it also spawns a lot more & replaces a certain object.

  • Regarding this Provisions Tips screen 2:47 Ruins: Only enemies that deal blight outside of DLC are the spiders, bleeds are more prevalent because of the generic human enemies like Brawlers, Cutthroats and Bloodletters which spawn everywhere. You should bring more shovels as they can be used to interact with the Cabinets and Sarcophagus, bring more holy water for Urns, Holy Fountains, Confessional Booths and lastly herbs to interact with Iron Maidens and Alchemy Tables. Cove: Buy way more shovels as they're not only needed but are the only item that can be used to interact with Barnacle Chests and Oysters (apart from Dog Treats). Once again only enemies that can blight you are spiders, everything else deals bleed damage. Bring as many herbs as you can to purge negative quirks with Coral, clear the crippling -spd debuff from the traps, clear the -healing received debuff from the giant crabs in later levels and use them on Fish Carcasses for loot. Weald: Bring both bandages and antivenoms, not only are bleed and blight damage common in the weald, but they are used for loot curios like Old Tree, Mummified Remains, Spiderweb and Luggage. Buy a lot of shovels, Weald has long narrow hallways that are most of the time impossible to avoid, other than that shovels are the only item that can be used on Shallow Graves. Medicinal herbs are less important during the early levels, but become more important when the crones, giants and viragos start spawning, those debuffs are nothing to mess with. Other than that holy water is nice for Effigies and Fountains, as well as the Eldritch Altars which spawn in all regions. Warrens: You very rarely have need for more than 2 shovels in the warrens, because of the interconnectivity of the hallways and the general box shape of the area. Same for torches, because you can clear the dungeon so quickly you can get away with taking less torches. Warrens enemies deal both blight and bleed, so bring both antivenoms and bandages. Slightly more bandages because of the Rack of Blades scattered around and the traps bleeding you. Holy waters for Piles of Bones. Herbs for the Moonshine Barrels and well as to purge the -50% healing received debuff the butcher pigs give at later levels. If I had to give an example for provisions I would take for Medium dungeons in each area I'd recommend: Ruins - 2 antivenoms, 3 bandages, 3 shovels, 3 keys, 4 holy waters, 2-3 herbs Cove - 4 bandages, 5 shovels, 2-3 keys, 3 holy waters, 5-6 herbs Weald - 4 antivenoms, 4 bandages, 4-5 shovels, 3 keys, 3 herbs, 3 holy waters Warrens - 3 antivenoms, 4 bandages, 2 shovels, 3 keys, 3 herbs, 4 holy waters Regarding food, usually 16 food is enough for mediums, 12 for shorts and 24 for long missions. But that's all down to personal preference. Same for torches, 1 stack is typically enough for short missions, 2 stacks for mediums and 3 stacks for longs.

    @thickveinysausage3062@thickveinysausage30622 жыл бұрын
    • I will add that in the ruins, keys are better than shovels as they give more loot when interacting with cabinets and sarcophagus, so I use a 4-2 ratio instead. Also you can buy torches aggressively, so every treasure room when you are about to finish the battle dip out the light for more loot. Both the extra loot from the battle as well as from the chest in the same room and even other curios around(if you have the map scouted)are worth the 4 torches(300gold) you have to use to relight

  • For me, i always bring extra food and torches whenever i go on quests. Because you never know when rng will mess you up by giving you constant hunger checks, bringing tons of food for medium and long quests will also ensure that you can always use the feast option for stress heal. And in regards to bringing extra torches i cannot stress enough (get it) how powerful light manipulation is, snuffing your light meter at the end of a fight specially if you're in a treasure room or you have scouted multiple curios in the next hallway will give you tons of loot which will help you a lot. This is much more powerful in veteran and champion dungeons where the loot scales up a lot. And when you just started, don't be afraid to kick off heroes with high stress or have bad quirks to save money and make room for better ones.

  • 11:58 Yes, the Boss always spawns the furthest away, but it also spawns in the room most far down and most to the right. So if two rooms are the same number of rooms away from the start, the room further down on the Y-Level of the map will have the Boss. If both rooms are the same Y-level on the map, the Room most towards the right on the map will have the Boss. 13:50 The Stun resist buff is actually 50% and increases for 50% for every additional time they got chainstunned. So when you stun once the enemy will get a 50% buff. If you manage to stun the again, they will get a 100% buff and so on. No matter how high the resist is tho, it will go away after they take one action without being stunned. 20:38 Relying on stats doesn't really help the Trinket selection. Each Trinket gives a different amount of stats with different downsides. Stuff like Berserk charm Quick Draw Charm might have the stats mentioned, but still absolutely suck. Basing Trinket priority on just stats like SPD is a veeeeeery bad idea. Explaining what every Trinket does and how good it does what it does takes a looooong time. I recommend looking up Trinket Tier lists/guides to get a feeling for what Trinkets to prioritize. 20:50 They can cure Debuffs inflicted by enemies. They just can't cure Debuffs inflicted by the Town or the Hero themselves. This can also be seen by the Icon of the Debuff. Just Orange when the Debuff can be cured and a Red Arrow when it can't 21:08 It doesn't. It removes one selected disease. It has a chance to remove additional Diseases when the Sanitarium is upgraded. 21:59 I don't think those are the only Quirks you should ever remove. Sure, stuff like Dud Hitter might not matter that much, but things like Slowdraw, Nervous, Fragile and -ACC have a bigger impact. They are basically like downsides a Trinket would have that you cannot play around like the Phobias. In my opinion, focusing on removing stuff like that is more important than removing forced interaction quirks. (Except Kleptomania) I also think removing Interaction Quirks early isn't a really good idea. (Except Klepto on Reynauld) Most of the time you are going to throw away your heroes pretty often so getting that additional Disease or Stress doesn't really matter so the only downside is the Loot you might've gotten if you used a Provision. And unless the Quirk misses you like 5 Curios removing it just costs a lot more. Most of this above is really nitpicky and for a big part my own opinion. Stuff like Trinket priorisation depend on your playstyle and I'm going off my own experiences. All in all, I think the Guide is still really helpful considering how short it is. Covering all the Strategies and Dephts of DD requires a loooooooong time.

    • I am in the same boat with the quirks. All the -acc stuff can be really bad in a dungeon especially when you do not use torches. The -manias are less of concern that moment, but when ie -5 Accuracy in the darkness is a quirk that can ruin your fight. And very bad is less acc and dmg against Eldrich as they are everywhere. That would be a bad quirk which either leads to better disposing the hero or remove the quirk depending on which level he or she has. In the early game I just swoop them with new ones. Also, when planing on fighting a boss then you should know what class the boss is. When a hero has a quirk -10% dmg against humans or so you should not bring it to the Hag as she is Human.

  • The bank isn't necessarily a trap, I don't spend money on any of my heroes until level 3, by the time all the level 1 bosses are defeated I have around 200k gold and I wouldn't benefit from upgrading the guild to lv 5, so getting the bank over the final guild upgrade is reasonable to snowball the money pile.

    @michaelgibbons7014@michaelgibbons70142 жыл бұрын
    • I agree entirely. It's compound interest that can come in handy real quickly. For 200k banked you get 5% and that's an extra 10k for every mission.

  • Don't waste money on stress healing or quirk removal on mediocre people in the early game just use them once or twice if they get good quirks concider keeping them if not just dismiss them it saves a lot of money Eldrich is the most common enemy type so quirks that give negatives and positives to them are the most debilitating and powerful And always bring a secondary healer with an Occultest, also upgrading the Occultest heal is a double edged sword because it also increases the chance to bleed your own people (Arbalist and Crusader is my favorite non Vestal healing combo) And lastly DOTs are OP against bosses and marks suck most of the time

    @Mutually_Assured_Destruction@Mutually_Assured_Destruction2 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah there's some chances mark does not work and would miss. Most of the time it works some of the times it doesn't so most of the times I mostly use the most accurate hero like the musketeer to do the marked hero. Though I rarely use it since my grave robber would destroy enemies with either lunge, pick to the face or any throwing dagger variants.

      @phantomvulpe791@phantomvulpe7912 жыл бұрын
    • @@phantomvulpe791 its not really the problem of it missing its the fact that to set up the damage you have to use a turn better spent somewhere else like stunning doing damage or healing and marks go off of how many actions the enemy takes so a boss with 2 actions will loose it quickly and other than size 2 creatures or the collector it isn't to helpful but dots also do damage each time an enemy acts so a single dot does damage twice to the same boss but if you want a mark comp the one I did the best with was from 1st to 4th is occultest, bounty hunter, highway man, Arbalist You get 2 stuns 2 heals 2 marks (Occultest and *bounty hunter) and at least 2 attacks on position 2-4 with mark boosts *don't use the pull mark because unless the enemy you want to mark is in 4th it pulls them out of range of the Arbalist and highway man's attack range for the mark Edit: but yeah just use a grave robber or highway man they don't need a mark to 1 shot when you got 40% crit on a 15-25 damage attack

      @Mutually_Assured_Destruction@Mutually_Assured_Destruction2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Mutually_Assured_Destruction yeah it's one of the reasons I bring bounty hunter for that marker damage and the occult(sometimes musketeer) to mark. But for some reason because rng in this game likes to say fuck you there's a verrrrrrry small chance you will miss.

Stress nukes, bleed/blight and diseases (even Crimson Curse) will be ignored. • So I’ve been playing for a good few hours made it into a few weeks and have beat my fair share of bosses and here’s some of my tips if anyone just wanted to pick up on it. 1. Antiquarian is your best friend for money making, she also can buff her teammates by giving them a dodge bonus and can proc blight so put her in the back and then put a healer stress healer and main damage and you’re set. 2. Don’t go into medium or long quests right when they come out, short missions are still amazing to use for leveling and getting some quick bucks. 3. Stock up on supplies you don’t have to go all out and buy a little bit of everything but at least get a shovel or two, food (8 for short, 20 for medium, and 24 or so for long) and torches (8 for short, 12 for medium, and 16 for long) and also medicinal herbs because those debuts can fuck you over I’m telling you (2-4 for short, 6 for medium, and 6 for long) 4. Speed and accuracy are very important being able to attack first or stack anything can be a matter of life and death and so can hitting those attacks. 5. Don’t forget to level up your hamlet, keep the heirlooms you get from expeditions and use those to upgrade your hamlet, those are the building blocks to making your teams strong. I have a few left in my little headspace but I feel like I’ve been going on for too long

  • Tip for exploring: If you want more loot and snuffing torchlight costs a lot for you, increase your scouting chance. It drops with lower light but if you scout a path that you haven't gone through without a hallway fight, you can go through it torchless, not waste the torches that would otherwise be used on it and increase your loot chance at the cost of a potential hunger check, and for paths that you have gone through but want to go torchless, try not interacting with curio on it beforehand, filled tiles decrease the chance of hallway fights and traps. It's also important in the beginning to end room fights with full torch for a higher scouting chance. Also the alchemist table that's present in ruins can be interacted with a torch to fill your light to 100.

  • Great video. I have to mildly disagree on the bank. If you grind low level missions and avoid aggressive upgrading of heroes for the first 10 weeks and just add the bank with gritted teeth you can spend a few more weeks adding gold and then go strictly to heirloom gathering. That also doesn’t mean you can’t stock heirlooms along the way. Stay slightly balanced with a bias towards gold early and grind low level then explode

  • I wouldn’t consider myself a veteran but I’m definitely not new. First save I made was on Radiant “the highest difficulty” & never had a single guy die besides like one vestal that I didn’t care about. I had a few close calls though with some of the higher level bosses. I never beat the game, but I didn’t lose either. I stopped playing that save & made a new one on normal. One tip that is so essential at least to me. Is to always killed the back line enemies first! On my first save I was always stressing & I would always be close to death from stress. Ever since I’ve managed my stress. I haven’t even had to use places like the taverns. Camping skills are also essential for managing stress. I’d say that’s the first thing you want to learn. I also prefer to have high dodge & speed. Never getting hit means less health loss & stress. Man at Arms, Occultist, & Antiquarin are essential. Another tip too is bleed & blight stack. So for warrens bring people that blight & for the Weald bring people that bleed. I hope this helps anyone new.

  • I disagree with the order of the stat priority, and I'll say why. 1. ACC is the most important stat, PERIOD. If you cannot hit your opponent, it doesn't matter how much damage you can do, or how fast you are. 2. SPD is second, but ONLY for making your heroes go in the order you want. There are arguments for your party going in different orders, but you def want your party mostly faster than the enemy if you can help it. 3. DMG is important, but depending on the hero, you may actually want more CRIT instead. A great example is 2nd row Occultist, who has what I'd argue is the best stun in the game. Landing a critical hit with a move that has status effects attached makes the chance for status to go up a sizeable chunk. You can easily create an Occultist that actually stunlocks fairly reliably despite the stun resist buff that recently stunned enemies get.

    @vincentcavanagh1784@vincentcavanagh17842 жыл бұрын
    • @O K ACC is the most important stat, but if the character in question has plenty, you can move on to the next stat. I wasn't saying you have to beef up ACC on every character. Occultist crits like nuts if you put CRIT trinkets or get a quirk that buffs CRIT. At max level, Occultist can get 220 (I think) stun chance on crit, and his stun skill actually still hits pretty hard on crit. At the end of the day, this makes this his best move like 75% of the time as far as action economy is concerned.

      @vincentcavanagh1784@vincentcavanagh17842 жыл бұрын
    • @O K all in all, he is one of the few classes that can actually stunlock a target with nearly 100% reliability through their stun resist buff, almost certainly taking them out of the fight completely. I'd like to think I understand how the game works, considering that I've cleared a handful of Stygian and Bloodmoon runs each, and have been playing on and off since the game came out. So making assertions about what I do and don't understand is just ignorant and rude.

  • Honestly I feel the bank is far more worth it than you make it out to be. Let's say you get the bank on week 40 (you can get it much earlier but I normally get it around 30-40). At this point you can get around 20,000-30,000 gold on a few good runs to get up to around 60-70,000 gold and try not to go below that number to keep the bank running. Doing some simple math 5% of that gets you an extra 3000-3500 gold per week. Over the remaining weeks (I'm using 55 weeks since you will need to the final dungeons and should have your heroes fully prepared at this point) that's an extra 165,000 to 190,000 gold! Even if you are getting 30,000 gold on average per week, that's an extra 5 or 6 weeks worth of gold. That amount of gold may not seem like much but keep in mind I am low balling the number here. If you can make it a bit more optimal (getting the bank sooner, having higher money for the bank etc) you can get around 350,000 gold from it (getting bank on week 25 and having around 100,000 gold on hand). This extra amount of money can seriously free you up to do other things like collecting heirlooms for town upgrades and other districts, not having to go on money runs and not having to worry about getting bad loot rolls.

  • There are some glaring issues, mainly too few specifics and outdated infos; 1. Provisions. What I mainly regard as a problem is that this part utterly fails to take how many obstacles and curios are generated in each dungeon and how they are shaped in general; For isntance, Ruins has the same range for # of obstacles (0-2 for short dungeons) as Cove and Warrens. The same goes for longer missions, you get the point. Plus, Ruins has dungeon structure that are similar to Cove (although less 'curvy'), and both of them are way less centralized compared to Warrens. Thus, when it comes to neutralizing obstacles, both Ruins and Cove should be considered the same. If you include curio interactions into account, nearly every other Cove curio needs shovel. Therefore, Warrens should have 'very few shovels', Ruins should have 'A couple shovels', and Cove should have 'more shovels', if I'm using the metric you have used. However, 'very few' or 'a couple' are not nearly specific enough. How many are 'a few shovels'? 3? 4? 5? Wait, I cannot bring 5 shovels to a short mission unless I'm using Grave Robber. Wait, should I bring all the shovels I can buy if I can just make heroes remove those obstacles by hand and let them heal up by stalling in coming battles? The specifics are missing here, and this can be detrimental when newcomers are trying to apply this to their playthrough. 2. 8:37 : Radiant light starts from 76. Technically, 75+ should mean the same thing technically, but you need to be more specific. 3. 10:09 : There are tiebreakers in case two or more entities have the same speed + 1d8 value. Heroes always win, and entities in 'more front' rows win the tiebreaking. Thus, instead of +8, +7 is required to always go first. However, this may not be the case when you're fighting against enemies with 2 or more initiatives, as the game tries to prevent an entity with multiple initiatives from acting multiple times in a row. These are very minor details, but they can (and should) affect how players react. 4. 11:54 : 1) The furthest from the starting point, in terms of how many rooms you should pass through. 2) The lowest room, if there are multiple rooms that meet 1). 3) The rightmost room, if there are multiple rooms that 1) and 2). These are full conditions of where boss rooms are generated. 5. 12:49 : Really? No mentions about Invigorating Vapour? 6. 13:10 : No Hellion? Barbaric YAWP? Or Vestal? Crusader with Paralyzing Crest? 7. 13:48 : 50%, not 40%. CoM came out years ago. 8. 15:14 : This explanation on stall timer is outdated. After 2 enemies are left, reinforcements will come after a predetermined number of rounds. This depends on whether the enemy belongs to 'fast reinforcement' category or not. You can find relevant info on wiki, because there are a lot of them and I can't be bothered to list all of them. You'll get a warning at the end of the round before reinforcements come. Before or after that warning, you need to use 2 offensive actions lest (Before the warning) the heroes will alert you about reinforcements or (after the warning) reinforcements will come. The warning is just a bark from one of the heroes that says smth along the lines of “do not toy with this one” etc. (In the courtesy of Nick) 9. 17:34 : Vintners? Puppet Theater? Her guide was before drop rate of the Blood was lower and there were no Gather the Blood missions. Clearly, it is a general consensus that either Cartographer's Camp / Granary is the best first district. Bank is good if you can go for early bank strategy (I'm talking about ~15 week, with enough principal) 10. 20:05 : By the extension of 8, it is wiser to let Jester use Finale against weak yet strong backliners.

    • @@vincentcavanagh1784 That part I get is a learn as you go kind of thing. But how many runs would I need to do to know for sure that trying to stun the round immediately after would have a 40% lower success rate? I tried it six times to stunlock and it never worked out so I gave up on it. I'm guessing around sixty hours of gameplay doing nothing but trying to stunlock, account for my characters' stats, enemy resistance, and then have enough volume to actually get a meaningful set of data. I don't have time for that in my life. How long would I have needed to play to understand the speed stat? Nobody would ever guess that it's a d8 variable or even figure it out short of stripping the code or having a programmer on the design team tell you. Or, alternatively, I could do something similar to the above. I'm not down for that either. I'm idiotically analytical to the point of analysis paralysis when it comes to math and turn based games (even if it's pretty much just addition and subtraction with the lightest algebra imaginable in this game) and knowing this kind of stuff is absolutely massive to me. I'm a little unsure that the dev team wanted anybody to be left in the dark on much of this since they have a direct link to the wiki, help boards, and are pretty in depth with their coverage on the official site. In my experience people don't typically enjoy games that are hard because they're inconsistent nonsense. Stumbling my way through something I have no hope of understanding due to how long it takes to even do a single run for the entire campaign sounds like a very fresh hell that only a masochistic weirdo would get off on, and dev teams don't typically like being battered with hate mail being told that their game is no fun because how it functions makes zero rational sense. To me gaming fun doesn't come from trying to figure out how something mathematically works while I get pummeled into oblivion testing every hypothesis I can. It comes from knowing how the system works, cranking it up to the hardest difficulty they've got, and seeing if I have the reflexes, understanding, and judgement necessary so I can actually finish it.
