I honestly don't think SNL ever did or ever will do any better than Will Ferrell...he practically carried the show on his own for much of the later part of his time on the show, with the rest of the cast essentially assisting lol. He always gave 110% to every single sketch, and it always showed.
Happens every generation. Eddy Murphy carried them after the first cast left.

Darrell Hammond carried just as much weight on the show in that era but gets a lot less credit. Molly Shannon, Chris Kattan, Cheri O'teri were also capable of carrying sketches on their own Will Ferrell it was just so obvious at that time that he was going to be a massive star for the next decade beyond the show itself
