The region, known historically as Persia, has been home to several ancient civilizations, including the Elamites, who flourished around 2000 BC. Around 550 BC, Cyrus the Great founded the Achaemenid Empire, laying the foundation for one of the world's largest empires, stretching from the Mediterranean to the Indus River.
Subsequent centuries witnessed the rise and fall of empires, including the Parthians, Sassanids, and the Arab-Muslim conquest in the 7th century AD. The Islamic Golden Age under the Abbasid Caliphate brought remarkable achievements in science, philosophy, and art.
In the 16th century, the Safavid dynasty established Twelver Shia Islam as the state religion, leading to a period of cultural renaissance and geopolitical prominence.
The 20th century brought significant changes, from the Constitutional Revolution in 1906 to the rise of Reza Shah Pahlavi and subsequent modernization efforts. However, discontent with the monarchy culminated in the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which transformed Iran into an Islamic Republic under Ayatollah Khomeini's leadership.
Since then, Iran has grappled with domestic reform, regional influence, and international sanctions, all while preserving its rich cultural heritage and historical legacy, which continues to shape its identity on the global stage.

When the Persian capital of Ctesiphon in province of Khvarvaran (today Iraq) fell to the Muslims in 637 under the military command of Sa'ad ibn Abi Waqqas during the caliphate of Umar, the palaces and their archives were burned. The Tarikh al-Tabari describes that Waqqas wrote to Caliph Umar asking what should be done with the books at Ctesiphon. Umar wrote back: "If the books contradict the Qur'an, they are blasphemous. On the other hand, if they are in agreement, they are not needed, as for us Qur'an is sufficient." Thus, the huge library was destroyed and the books, the product of the generations of Persian scientists and scholars were thrown into fire or the river Euphrates.
