He wasn't a virtuoso on any instrument, but he would come up with the different parts in his head and beat box the percussion, bass lines and sing the melodies to his session musicians, guys like Quincy Jones, and Teddy Riley who would help put the song together. MJ says that's how he would write his songs in several interviews and it has been corroborated by those he worked with.
