Nandi Bushell Performs "Caravan"

Originally recorded in 1936 by Duke Ellington, "Caravan" has become a rite of passage for drummers due to its quick tempo and challenging Latin to swing feel changes. Most arrangements of the tune feature a drum solo as well. In this video, Nandi Bushell will perform her version of "Caravan" in the Drumeo Studio!

  • Caravan is the hardest song I have learnt, so far... I am so proud to have been invited on to Drumeo at 13. I wanted to show everyone what I am currently capable of, and have as much fun as possible. I decided to play the hardest song I knew. It’s tricky as it’s really fast and there is a lot to remember. I need a lot of stamina to play triplets on the hi-hat. Also the triplets on the kick are very difficult to perform at this speed. I gave it my best shot. I played to my tempo and I am proud of my performance.

Being a prodigy doesn't mean talent comes natural, it still requires serious effort. I've likely put in less hours in 25 years on the drums than she has in her lifetime. Her flawless polyrhythms and ghost notes only add to this spectacular performance. Kudos, Nandi - I wish you all the success in the world.

    • as I've said previously, you need an enabler to be good at any craft, music or sport. You need someone to take the daily duties of cooking and cleaning and paying bills so you can focus 24/7. This is easy being a kid, because your parents are your enablers! as an adult you need a VERY supportive partner. THESE are HARD TO FIND. not impossible, there are naive groupies out there. therefore, there will always be 'talented' kids who had what they needed to improve their skills. not to take anything away from us, pre internet folks, we had all the discarded chords the Beatles didnt use (before oasis took the rest)! the next generation will therefore need to make something from nothing. I wish Nandi all the best when she begins her career.

  • OH WOW! I wish my grandfather and mom were still around, he was a huge Duke fan (and played horns for big band) and my mother was a drummer in an all girl band in the 70s. I wish I could show them your stuff! They would both think you are amazing!

  • It's crazy that she's technically so proficient, especially for her age. Yet there's places where you can hear the 13-year old sense of musicality, because there really is only so many years of musical experience, or life experience. It's natural, raw and her own style is only beginning to take shape. What an amazing thing to witness.

  • Nandi - I’ve been watching you since you were about nine years old and I got to say that you’re absolutely amazing! I only follow a few artists and you are definitely one of them. I also shared your video of Caravan with a local major radio station here called jazz FM 91 in Toronto. The actual frequency is Jazz F M 91.1 FM. It’s supported with a few regular commercials throughout. Maybe one day you’ll get a chance to be on the air with them as well! Thanks for all you do you have fans here in Canada!🇨🇦

  • I literally almost started clapping at the end of the performance, but then I realized I was at work. Man, I wish I could have started playing the drums when I was younger when I wanted to. It's too noisy, she said. Luckily, I have a wife now who supports me making noise, for the most part. Now I'm just trying to catch up by using Drumeo and learning new things each day. I know I'll never be up to Nandi's level, but at least I've got a start now with Drumeo's membership. Thanks for your inspiration Nandi!
