  • NOTE: This is a question that has come up a few times, so I just want to ensure it's especially clear: as stated in the video, a player CANNOT build houses on a property unless they own ALL of the properties of that color set. This means that if you own one red property and another player owns the other two, neither of you can build on red properties. You will have to wait until that player goes bankrupt and hopefully acquire their properties, OR you can trade with them (explained in the video).

    • Hi Rodney, thanks for your great content as always. One question I have that I don't think the video covered: can I mortgage a property if I still have 1 house on another property of the same set? My guess is no, since I can't buy houses if any properties are mortgaged, but it wasn't explicit in the video. Thanks again, great stuff!

  • Now we see why no one plays Monopoly correctly: It takes Rodney Smith, the greatest board game explainer, nearly 18 minutes to go over the rules. Most non-gamer attention spans last about 2 minutes before their eyes glaze over & they say: “Let’s just PLAY!” LOL!

    @phoeteus@phoeteus4 жыл бұрын
    • First off, welcome! Glad to have you here, and sorry if some of the comments are a bit confusing. Second of all, this is a legitimate tutorial video for Monopoly, and that's what it's meant to be. Thanks for the kind words about it. The main reason for many of the comments is that I typically cover board games that you are more likely to find in a hobby store dedicated to board games. Monopoly and other games (like Risk, Trouble and Candy Land) are usually seen as mass market games sold in mass market stores. However, the hobby of board games has grown a lot over the past decade, with the variety and depth of theme and styles of play evolving at an amazing speed. Over 3,000 DIFFERENT board games release a year now, and it's these other types of non mass-market games that I typically cover. I hope you check a few out, you might really enjoy them. Could I suggest Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride to start? Or if you like the idea of a co-operative game (where players work together), perhaps Pandemic? These games are also getting more popular, so you might find them in your mass-market stores too! People who play some of these newer games I'm mentioning, may end up looking down on mass market games. It's not entirely with mean-spirited intentions at heart. There are some common criticisms of mass market games. Games like Monopoly rely a lot on luck, taking the choices away from the player. You roll the dice and you move where the dice take you. Modern games tend to give the players more choice - instead of rolling the dice, you decide where you want to go. Older games, like Monopoly, tended to have things like "player elimination" where a player could be kicked out of the game before it's over. Modern games frown on that. We don't like to have experiences where some people get to keep playing and having fun, while others are sitting on the sidelines. That said, just because some people may not like older games as much any more, that doesn't mean they don't have value. Lots of people still enjoy these games today... and they should. "Fun" is not something that someone else gets to tell another person how to have. If you play Monopoly and enjoy it, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Unfortunately, like any members of a niche hobby - sometimes the biggest supporters of it can get a "little snooty" about the games they left behind in pursuit of newer options. In part, that's why I released this on April 1st. I wanted to create a proper tutorial for Monopoly, a game that is quite frequently played wrong, but I also needed to give some of my core audience an excuse not to fill the comments with "this game is trash, why would you ever cover it?". For that portion of my audience, they now have an excuse: "ah, it's an April Fools joke!" - for everyone else, and for folks like you, you hopefully get to enjoy a well presented tutorial about a classic game that introduced many of us to the hobby we now enjoy. I hoped to have a little fun with my core audience who wouldn't expect a video like this (for reasons I appreciate), but I also wanted to do a legit tutorial for a classic game. The other hope I have, is that people who aren't aware of the wonderfully diverse world of board gaming today, may discover it, by finding this video here and then checking out some of the other ones on this channel. I hope you have a look around - happy gaming!

Darrow definitely made some changes and refined the game, but it's hard to know to what extent, since he was taught some version of the game by players in the early 1930s, and no record of that version survives. So a joint credit for the game is the fairest solution.

  • Man, I could not thank you enough! Im currently replicating monopoly fully in Minecraft and its really hard to get the rules and everything since the computer follows a stright dialouge of instructions that basicly consist and build on top of these rules so I have to specify every single detail and it can be frustrating hard to get your head around, how this may all works and when to display what. This helped a ton!!! Thanks man!! Got so many notes now 😂

  • Wow great video. I do not usually play Monopoly anymore but when I did I always sat down with the people I was playing and ironed out all house rules and basic rules so that we were all on the same page. Until I discovered Betrayal at House on the Hill, I played this game a ton and had over 20 different flavors. My favorite was the MegaMonopoly which added a speed die and extra properties.
