It’s a good strategy if you have limited space, but if space wasn’t an issue it would be better to stretch out longer. Usually you want to go out as long as you can for better form and less back pain

But…. not the safest. This is called undercutting and if you train them like that it can damage your spinal canal, hips, shoulders, elbows, wrist, knees and ankles and spine. This can also cause whiplash and cause head injuries. It was smart but definitely not safe.

As someone who has learned how to do a backhand spring you are taught not to go out a lot and pretty much stay in the same spot you started(you are supposed to move out a bit tho)

Ikr, I’m a cheerleader and while everybody else can do amazing back handsprings I can’t even do one, because I can’t get over the fear of falling and getting a concussion. My body is just not meant for tumbling.

If you don’t know, this is called undercutting. It is where whenever you do a skill (most likely a backhandspring) you arch really far and it kind of makes you go nowhere. It can be really harmful and very bad technique wise, but if you know how to control it and when to not use it then it isn’t too bad. It’s still not a good habit to have.

Back when my sister was on a competitive tumble team, she had a reaaaaally bad habit of it and it drove the coach nuts lol. She doesn’t really tumble that much anymore cause she developed back problems and I wonder if undercutting for many years is the reason why😬

I was hoping someone said something. A true back handspring doesn’t have much of an arch, using shoulder flexibility and the muscles in your legs to push you into the bhs itself; lessening the weight and impact on a persons spine. When undercutting the legs do much less and the spine arching much much further and surrounding muscles drive the skill, along with putting more weight and impact into the spine. In other words 11/10 don’t recommend.

I used to undercut badly and they would stick me on bigger and bigger barrels and put up mats that forced me to extend properly until I broke the habit. Can’t do any of it anymore though because I didn’t practice after I quit

It’s a good strategy if you have limited space, but if space wasn’t an issue it would be better to stretch out longer. Usually you want to go out as long as you can for better form and less back pain

She did lots in one place whereas the other kids spread them out more. It's an incredibly intelligent way of doing it!!
But…. not the safest. This is called undercutting and if you train them like that it can damage your spinal canal, hips, shoulders, elbows, wrist, knees and ankles and spine. This can also cause whiplash and cause head injuries. It was smart but definitely not safe.

As someone who has learned how to do a backhand spring you are taught not to go out a lot and pretty much stay in the same spot you started(you are supposed to move out a bit tho)

Ikr, I’m a cheerleader and while everybody else can do amazing back handsprings I can’t even do one, because I can’t get over the fear of falling and getting a concussion. My body is just not meant for tumbling.
If you don’t know, this is called undercutting. It is where whenever you do a skill (most likely a backhandspring) you arch really far and it kind of makes you go nowhere. It can be really harmful and very bad technique wise, but if you know how to control it and when to not use it then it isn’t too bad. It’s still not a good habit to have.
Back when my sister was on a competitive tumble team, she had a reaaaaally bad habit of it and it drove the coach nuts lol. She doesn’t really tumble that much anymore cause she developed back problems and I wonder if undercutting for many years is the reason why😬
I was hoping someone said something. A true back handspring doesn’t have much of an arch, using shoulder flexibility and the muscles in your legs to push you into the bhs itself; lessening the weight and impact on a persons spine. When undercutting the legs do much less and the spine arching much much further and surrounding muscles drive the skill, along with putting more weight and impact into the spine. In other words 11/10 don’t recommend.

I like this challenge, except you don't want to get a bad habit of under cutting on your back hand springs. You should do who can do the least BHS to get to the end of the mat.
I used to undercut badly and they would stick me on bigger and bigger barrels and put up mats that forced me to extend properly until I broke the habit. Can’t do any of it anymore though because I didn’t practice after I quit
