  • Thank you for your review. I have these pencils but since I love Prismacolor so much, they are my go to pencils. I had trouble layering these Colorsoft pencils. They would not take too many layers. I watched another instructor give a review of these pencils and he said that people who like to layer many layers, thst these pencils do not blend well. As we know, some pencils are used for different styles of coloring. By the way, I have the Dahle 133 sharpener and have been using it for three years now. It seems to agree with all my brands of pencils I have purchased. I usually only turn the handle 3 rounds for a great point.

I am going to hopefully film a video tomorrow where I put these pencils up against the Black Widow pencils and the Prismacolor pencils. The Black Widows have been very popular as of late since the release of the Monarch set so this is why I'm adding these in. They are also wax-based like the other two pencils. Look for that video tomorrow or the next day. You will be surprised at what I show you on camera!

    • Have you tried Derwent's watercolor pencils? I found them to be not that great when compared with competing brands, like the Albrecht Durer or the Museum Aquarelle lines. I found the Derwents to be dull in color and having a strange, chalky quality to them that was undesirable.

      @neilallen529@neilallen5292 жыл бұрын
    • @@neilallen529 I have not tried them no but you are not alone in your opinion of them. I haven't tried them partly because I read many reviews which, like you, say they aren't very good, (although Lisa from Lacrai (?) fine art liked them) and partly because I already had the Albrecht Durer (they are gorgeous) and someone bought me the museum aquarelle full set as a gift. I also have the supracolor by Caran D'ache so I don't need any more watercolour pencils! I think I already have the best ones available so Derwent's were never really on my list. However Derwent do make my all time favourite pencils with the Lightfast range. Best pencils on the market in my opinion with Luminance coming a very close second. These two sets in my opinion make the perfect pencil set.

      @BlueKungFu@BlueKungFu2 жыл бұрын
    • @@BlueKungFu I just recently bought the whole Luminance set, and I think they're my favorite with the Holbein pencils behind them. Those two are both quite different from each other, but I love them both. I was debating with myself on whether to go with the Luminance or the Lightfast and I chose Luminance because I had bought the 20 set before and liked them, and I have never tried the Lightfast, so they would be an unknown for me. I've only heard good things about them, though. One of these days I'll have to try them. Yeah, you aren't missing out on anything with the Derwent watercolor pencils. I was unfortunate enough to have those as my introduction to watercolor pencils, and even then, I somehow knew there was something about them I didn't like. When I switched to the Albrecht Durer line, I was like, "WHOA!" Total world of difference. Lachri...hmm. She's a good artist and I do value her opinion, but she has said some things I certainly don't agree with (which is totally normal and fine.). For example, take the pencils in this video. Because Lachri couldn't get them to work for HER, she strongly condemns them. I didn't trust that, so I looked up other videos like this and I'm seeing other opinions that are quite contrary to hers. I was surprised to see she likes the Derwent Water Color Pencils so much compared to other (in my opinion) MUCH MUCH MUCH better options, but I guess they work for her and that's what counts for her. Me? I have them and never use them.

      @neilallen529@neilallen5292 жыл бұрын
    • @@neilallen529 The Luminance are an excellent set, you can't go wrong with them. I sadly haven't tried Holbein yet, although they are definitely on my list. I've got a friend visiting Japan who can hopefully pick me up a set. The Lightfast are a gorgeous pencil. They are firm yet buttery, hold a good point and I love the colour pallette. Maybe get a couple in open stock to try them to see if you like them. Oh yeah the Albrecht Durer are my favourite! The colours are so vibrant and dissolve so easily, gorgeous pencils. I do love the museum aquarelle as well but if I were going to recommend a set to someone, I'd say Albrecht Durer every time. Yes I know what you mean about Lisa at Lachri, she is a bit brutal when something doesn't work for her! It's the same with the Holbeins, she's quite savage about those and all I've heard from others is that they're excellent, one of the best on the market. I like having different pencils because they all have their strengths (well maybe not the Derwent Watercolour!) and weaknesses. Different pencils for different paper, style, artist, technique etc. At least that's the excuse I use for having so many sets!

I like Castle Arts and Shuttle Art...I am delighted with them all. I never tried Prism...I wonder how they measure up. • I just purchased Southern 160 Oil pencils which I prefer oil based pencils..these are great.. not too pricey at all. And Castle Art 24 count oil based skin tones. So I have 1 expensive brand and some low end brands. I recently bought but returned Black Widow light and dark skin towns and I was doing Victorian ladies..what a disaster. The Black Widow are way to waxy. I had to use my Derwent Color soft to do details of the face as the Black Widows wouldn't even lay. I am not heavy handed..however..I just got my sister the Monarchs and that made her complete set. She likes black widow but she is heavy handed and does more Mendalas. I guess to each their own. This is solely based on my oppinion. Does anyone agree?

    • Hi, beforehand I am sorry for long text, but I know how hard is to choose pencils. Koh-i-noor polycolor are great pencils and I love them but they are harder (but not too hard) and there is a lot of inconsistency in colors. Some of them are layering well, some of the don't. Some of them are a little bit scratchy. They are a lot cheaper in our country(Czech republic) than coloursoft, but coloursoft are definetly better in layering and blending. Actually I can compare coloursoft better with Koh-i-noor mondeluz (aquarell pencil), which are almost as soft as coloursoft and I prefered them before polycolor. But I should mention that Koh-i-noor is working on polycolors and they are making them better (the company is far more younger than Derwent) and they have a lot of new colors in their new set (144). I think, that i will use them both, because I am used to Koh-i-noor colors and coloursofts are complementing them with company of derwent drawing. Best to compare are really light colors. In polycolor there are not so visible as in coloursoft which is why I tried coloursoft in the first place.I should also mention, that I am actually drawing e.g. portraits so coloursoft are better for this, but only for coloring or simple drawings Koh-i-noor polycolors are fine if you won't layer too much. If you will be buying Koh-i-noor look for tin boxes. Paper boxes have pencils with worse wood and tend to break more easily then these in tin boxes, but the core is the same. I hope that will help a little :)
