This video is really all about trying to get the best possible results and outcome for a small stone chip, for those of you that have a little experience under you’re belt. However if you’ve never touched up, sanded or corrected automotive paint in the past, this really isn’t the best starting paint, as there is a learning curve we all need to go through before getting to this stage. The best way to safely buildup your skill set is to grab a cheap car panel from a car wreckers and use that to practice on before attempting it on your beloved car!
Great Video...
Ive used those Duplicolor touch up paint pens that have both. Bruch and plastic pen with clear. There ok but no means perfect this is the best method i have seen. Also i use Various Meguires Ultimate And Gold Class Products on all my cars paint.
Thanks for making this video! Question though.. When painting, if I go outside of the chipped area a tiny bit, should I sand lightly to remove the paint or just continue with the process? It’s difficult to stay perfectly inside the area missing paint so I’m curious what you do if you end up going outside a tiny bit.
I’d use some thinners to gently wipe it off an start again. Unless the paint is too thin, it really should sit inside the chip as long as you just dab the paint into the chip.
I subscribed because of the honesty in your video. I'm a DIY mechanic and have done a little "make it acceptable" paint correction, recently bought a (factory) new yellow car, and it got a stone chip. The part where you said "It will never be perfect" and admitted you don't always do this either, made me realise, that I'm just going to do a basic touch up with cleaning, base coat and clear coat, and not bother wet sanding, as it will have me need to re-polish a 2 week old car. Not worth the effort. It can get this treatment, and then a yearly polish if I'm not satisfied. Thanks for the honesty.
I did this to my 2015 Reflex Blue Mazda 6. After 3 days of hard work and effort it did not turn into a Red F430 Ferrari.
You did something wrong somewhere... my 12-year-old Jeep Wrangler turned into a brand new Lambo.
Because you put red touch-up paint on your blue car. Duh.
You see your problem was you weren't quite holding your mouth right and you were breathing on the offbeat, otherwise you would have had an F430 with a manual transmission, in Ferrari red no less. We just can't seem to get you kids to get it right. Oh well, maybe on your next pass. Wear these, 🕶, and at least you'll look cool until you get it right. Bare minimum you should have come out with a 308 GTB.
why do people buy Mazdas smh

Add %75 of the vid is 80’s porn music over showing lights reflecting in the paint
by then id have the entire car taped, papered, sanded, primed, sanded, tacked off. painted and let dry. then remove the tape. and still have time left to take a nap!
Use extreme caution if using lacquer thinner. I accidentally got 2 smudges on my 2016 jaguar ftype ammonite grey paint and it dulled my car paint. It seeped past my clear coat and modified my paint. I have to now find a way to correct this by spray painting the smudges. They look worse than the repaired paint chips and are larger in size. Just skip the lacquer thinner completely and use something else if you dont want to deal with the risk
I can at least respect the owner of this Ferrari, as they obviously drove the car and didn't just buy it to have a garage queen.
@Sleeping fuck off, stan. Ferrari owners don't need your dumb ass defending them.
Can see lots of battle scars on that F430. Ive lots on my Ghibli too and thats why I came to watch this video.
Something tells me the owner doesn't need, want, or require your "respect "for what he or she does or doesn't do with their own vehicle.
Amen... I can’t imagine buying a car, $100 or $100K, and not driving it. Seems more than a bit douchey to have a true ‘performance car’ only to have it be a garage queen. Enzo would’ve been glad too ‘sell it’ to you, but he’d probably not respect you if you didn’t get it on the road.
@@faizzaziz Why bother on the Ghibli? It's not worth anything anymore anyway!
Great video. Based on your tutorials, I did my 17' Range Rover Sport, in Cassin Grey. Prepped 30 spots or so, and a couple door dings, in about four hours. Prepped paint with 4/6 Sonax compound, isopropyl wipe down. Marked spots with small post-it stickers, so as not to contaminate spots with wax pen. Sanded with 2000 grit paper initially. but only in 1/2" circles. Cleaned chips with "farmers reducer", a bodyshop thinner on q-tips. Applied 4 coats OEM touch up paint, and 4-6 coats of OEM clear, with a 1mm artists brush($2). Following weekend, sanded with 2500 & 4000 grit, wet paper. Iso wipe, Sonax 4/6, compound again, and then did entire car with Chemical Guys V38 final compound, two coats Jet Seal, and four coats Zymol Carbon paste. All machine applied with a Festool rotax 125 RO, Griots orange pads on compound, red pads for polish, black pads for wax. Distilled water rinse and microfiber hand buff. All done, I spend about $300 on consumables and 20 hours over two weekends. You'd be hard pressed to find the chips now, and I'm over the moon about the results. I caught my boss touching my car in the office parking lot. said it felt like "wet", lol. Thanks so much for the videos. One of the only zero-hype, zero brand fan-boy channels on here, with solid techniques.
Wow, sounds like you really nailed it with you’re method and technique with great results to reflect that! Thanks for sharing your process and outcome, I really appreciate it!
@@CarCraftAutoDetailing The NSX video was the inspiration for the effort, I'll try ceramic next year. Thanks for all your hard work on these vids, truly stellar.
just do like nascar and call a bunch of sponsors. they will pay you to put their decals right over those chips. if you go far enough they will completely body wrap it in whatever color you want. if it stands up to 200 mph, car parts thrown at it, then its gotta be the real deal. im gonna buy windshield tear offs. when it gets screwed up just grab the tab and rip it off and voila a new windshield.
That’s awesome, I am about to attempt this on my brand new 2022 BMW in a gray metallic color, do you think that the same steps would apply to the plastic bumper? Or just metal? Thank you
@@nicholasbabeaux2052 same steps
You can focus your sanding by using a hole punch and crazy gluing it to a pencil eraser. This allows you to roll the pencil between your hands and avoid sanding off more of the clear coat than necessary.
I work in paint for one of the big 3, we get chips like this straight out of a brand new paint job from the oven, we do a similar method, but use toothpicks, but..we have 30 seconds to do each touch up, all while on a moving line lol, it's tricky.
Best video ive seen for touch up paint, the theory makes sense and the results prove it. 8 haters are jealous and sad... thank you!!
Great video Sandro. This is without a doubt, the best "touch up" work on rock chips I have ever seen done outside of a professional respray. Also the most outstanding results in the end by any professional detailer. Thanks for sharing your many years of experience with us enthusiasts out here in the world. I have to fix about six or eight rock chips on my red Nissan 370Z which also has very soft paint. After viewing this video it gave me a more in depth understanding of how to approach doing a more professional job on my chips. If my repair looks half as good as yours, I would be totally thrilled. Fortunately I have a Flex PXE-80 which hopefully will assist in achieving some great finishing results. I just have to pick up a few of those small 1" sanding disc's and a few of those finger sanding blocks in various grades. Thanks again for this great information and demonstration/tutorial! I've said it before and I will say it again, you are one of the BEST expert/master detailers on this entire planet! They should give you an Honorary PHD in Automotive Detailing! Dr. Sandro. The Doctor is in! 👍
Yeah man, this is how you do it. And its explained in a manner so that even a novice can get the same results (given the right tools and PATIENCE) I would like to stress that to "APPLY NO PRESSURE against the surface while sanding" is of utmost importance let the sandingpaper do ALL the work. You did mention it, but it cannot be stressed enough to the inexperienced.
Could not have taken longer to get to the point. Porn music is cheesy and needless. But, thanks....
@@BigStik2007 It really is some porn music isn't it.
Amazing video. Goes over every single step from start to finish. Thanks for taking the time to do this!
Finally, someone showing how to correct rock chips THE RIGHT WAY.
You can also use little clear in the base
@@MrClempro48 unless its metallic
if you knew "THE RIGHT WAY" then why are you here?
@@jakefromstatefarm9721because he paid someone 50$ in a parking lot to put paint in his rock chips and thought he was going to get body shop results. He doesn’t realize “THE RIGHT WAY” would be minimum 250$ -500$ depending on the amount of chips. I’m a painter but I use to do bumper welding and “touch ups” no one ever wanted to pay for it to be done right. They just wanted some paint in it. So I realized I could fix and sell a lot more rock chips at 100$ the wrong way then I can the right way. I can hide them for 100$ or make them disappear for 700$ guess what they choose.. every time.. 100$. Because if I’m going to sand and buff and polish. I may as well paint and have a PERMANENT fix.
Fantastic video guide, i have done touch ups like this before but there's definitely a number of things i can take away from this for next time!
It is so nice to see someone doing something the right way.
The BEST rock-chip touch-up tutorial I've seen!! Good job!
I think you'd have more than a chip if a rock hit your car 😂
finally a video with the right procedure .. thank you
This is the best video on you tube for stone chip repair. Fantastic job.
Quality finish,i wouldn't have thought it possible with sanding and a paintbrush, but there it is in front of my eyes, superb.
This is the 1st time I ever see paint touch-up whit amazing results, super job and video Thanks vm Sandro...…. Wes from NJ.
Fantastic Learning Tool. I have been using all the wrong methods to wash my cars over the years. This video has helped me change the way to wash a car with outstanding results. Cheers
I followed this step by step on a pepper white mini and You have saved me getting the whole bonnet painted!!
Clearly a very thorough and detailed method to fix stone chips.
Sandro, I wanted to send a thank you for all the work you put into your videos. As you well know there’s an infinite amount of information/ videos out there but yours are the absolute best. Stay passionate!
Thank you for putting this up. I watched dozens of videos and this is by far the best.
Awesome job! I used to have a successful detailing business here in Japan, but could never do paint chip touch-ups like you've done here (could never get them flush). You're a real pro, and a great teacher.

Just about to work on the touch up of my Volvo. Perfect timing for your video. Thanks. Most helpful.
It's worked great for me! This was not time consuming but actually time very well consumed for how it changed my 04 STI.
Perfectly painted. Well done man. I never saw a video with pait correction like this. Very appreciated and i can learn how to do it
This is the reason I watch your videos. We might not be able to do what you do but we can get close because we now know the right way to do “X”. As always I learn something every time I watch your videos.👍😁
As a dual tradesman i appreciate you taking the time to detail the correct procedure, while acknowledging that it may rarely be adhered to. Great presentation and camera work.
This is by far the best touch up paint correction i have seen
Taking the time to explain everything multiple ways was key for greater understanding. Great work
Wow, best video i have found on this! The job was fantastic! Glad the car is driven too...
Very good video, I found it very useful, thanks for taking the time to post 👍
I learned a lot. Thank You.
That's how you do it, - proper job! Brilliant video, thank you so much for posting. I'm going to tackle my own stone chipped bonnet with much more confidence now!
Great vid mate! Been something on my mind as I have a few on some of my cars I want to address. Can't wait for full length vid - Keep it up! #1
So glad you did this. You're literally the first detailer I've seen that showed how to do the retouch if you have a 2 step kit (my Benz kit has the clear in a different bottle) and even though I assumed if would be best to sand and compound, no one did that either. Thanks again Sandro.
yeah I was looking to some pro detailer make some video to get some tricks, I have my car to do and it’s got a few stone ship Big thanks to you.
Your attention to detail is inspiring
Terrific tutorial. Very professional production, script & voice over. It was straightforward and easy to follow. Thank you!
This is best touch up work I have ever seen on my life!! I scratch my Prius and just ordered paint touch it up!!
Incredible job! Thank you for sharing your expertise. There's so much myths repeated all over youtube about other 'miraculous' ways of doing this...
Nice video - I think I'd be freaking out at the sanding stage thinking to myself what have I done to my car! Great end result!
Picking up the sandpaper the first time was ... hard.
At last, a pro solving the problem I have with the hood of my 2005 Mercedes SLK350. I don’t want to remove the factory paint but want to address the dozen or so chips. This is very helpful.
Bloody brilliant andreas. Perfect example of what we discussed in the TCB podcast. Bravo for calling them out 😁
Wonderful video, great showing of what a meticulous process it is to touch paint the right way. Quality takes time, so many on the internet show all these quick hacks for doing stuff like this and it looks good on camera, but the reality is those quick results are so inferior. Well done
Awesome steps. I wish other garages learn from you
God I wish you had done this video several months ago as it would have saved me $$$$$ repainting a bonnet and roof. Really good to know how to do this repair now the best way possible. Well done again.
Amazing content Sandro! Cheers from Florida, keep it up man you’re the best!
Using the three foot rule it looks perfect, on closer you can detect the spots but only you know that hood so well. Great tips, thanks for sharing.

Thank you very much for this most interesting and informative video; you've saved me a couple of thousand dollars over what a paint and body shop wanted to charge me to repair a few small stone chips on my new 370Z.
Bravo! Well done Sir. Well done indeed. Truly enjoyed watching this video.
Well done Sandro...Every time I hit the thumb up button before watching the vid and I am sure to do that.Eagerly waiting for upcoming vidz.
Some really helpful tips here that will get me much better finishes on my next touch up jobs, thanks for this!
Your videos are really informative. I have been waiting for your next video. Thank you and l am very much looking forward to the full length video on this F430. Thank you for taking the time to do this video
Really good tutorial, thanks. I have several chips I'd like to tackle on a classic without a respray and I think the tips I take from this has given me the feeling I can improve my chips enough, great job, thanks again for posting this.
If you don't mind, may I add a comment from experience? I'm assuming you said yes ... double check your touch up paint color somewhere inconspicuous and make sure that they are absolutely identical to your car's color otherwise they'll Stand Out worse than the chips did. Even if the tint is a little off. I had that happen once on a black car, and boy did they stand out. If you hadn't already thought of it or somebody already told you then hopefully that is useful. Best of luck with it.
A couple of years later and this is still the best Video I have seen. Great detail, thanks!
This will be my first time doing a touch up job to my car, and you simply made it look so easy; Eloquently put, you have dumb this down to the level where I feel extremely confident with my touchup job that I will be performing with your step-by-step including the wet sanding and polishing steps to the tee. Great job and thank you very much for your post
Hey m8. How did it go?:D

@Pedro especially 70's porn 🤣🤣

Some see a problem I see opportunity. I would have said "can you help polish me off?" If she gets mad then you say "it's just a car video." If she smiles then thank me later for my advice. Lol
hole punch the sandpaper and superglue the little circles to a new pencil eraser is how i sand these
You know that is really a great idea. I have never heard of that nor thought of it myself either. Thank you

Word of advice about the erasure-sanders: it is all to easy to be heavy handed.

By far the best video Ive seen and it gives me more confidence that its from an actual pro on a pretty expensive car.
Nice one. Got a few chips on new Volvo V90 and ws looking on best way to do this. Really helpful and kept it simple enough for the average car owner.
Great video: You explain just how complicated this really is. So many steps. Some of us are lucky that we don't drive old Ferrari's....I have a 2012 Infiniti G37xS Coupe in Red and I was able to purchase a touch up pen with real paint and not the water based crap that they sell at the stealership. The paint pen has regular paint on one end and clear at the other and are felt marker style. The front portion of my hood and some parts of the car including the mirrors are covered with the 3M clear cover. So my chips are on the rubber/plastic bumper. I use a fine paint brush too...after I've thoroughly cleaned the car I make note of the chips. I shake the pen to make sure that the paint is consistent in thickness. Then I dab a bit of paint on a small plastic plate and then soak the paint brush in the paint and apply a small amount of the paint in to the chip. I wait for it to dry as these types of touch up paint pens dry faster than body shop paint. Then I apply a small amount of clear coat. If you apply just the proper amount of both paint and clear the paint will fill the crack and just a bit of mild quick detailer hand polish with a microfibre a day later after the paint has cured and hardened will blend everything in. I use Meguiars Ultimate Quick Detailer with a quality microfibre cloth in a vertical followed by a horizontal motion to prevent any kind of swirl mark. I'm my case I'm too chicken to sand anything. But I can tell you that after a week later if I still see any uneven paint from the touch up job, I can do a machine polish and the results are amazing too. Sometimes after I wash the car I use a q-tip dabbed in alcohol to clean the chip. While I have your attention I also recommend using the 3M clear cover on your headlight lenses to prevent oxidation and pitting and a proper car cover if you like to leave your car outside in the summer. (Actually 3M clear plastic is a rubberized version of clear coat!) I can't stress enough how this actually saves you so much trouble. Thanks for a great video! Cheers from Montreal, Canada!
I am in the same situation..only difference ..I have an 04 Mini Cooper S, chili red..I am doing all the door knicks..very informative video..thanks
Great video/tutorial! This adds on to some of the skills picked up on my dealership side job. This will help so much on personal vehicles!
Hell yeah! I needed this video too 😂 I have little circular places on the hood that don’t have paint 🤷♀️ I didn’t even know there was a 4000 grit sandpaper 😳 I can’t thank you enough for teaching me how to fix my old paint job!!! New subscriber 🤙🏼
Brave man sanding on a Ferrari. Great tips. No wonder mine looked like crap.
I don't think any Ferrari would look like crap 😜
Thank you! I'm going to try this on my bright red Dodge truck.
How did you go? How’s that truck?
I had a chip on my car that needed repair. Most videos show people dabbing the chip with a brush or a paint stick and that’s it. Though the chip is filled, the repair looks awful. I followed your steps on my car and I have to say the chip is gone. I was lucky my paint touch up matched, but without your steps it would never look as good. The trick is go slo and take your time. Great video. Thanks again!!!!
Excellent guide; most complete and better tips than I have seen elsewhere. LONG overdue fixing a whole starfield worth of chips on my old ride! You did a great job on that bonnet's paintwork as well.
I'm afraid I might rub through the clear coat, but I'm going to give it a try anyway on a spot least conspicuous. If all goes well, I'll tackle the remaining chips. Thanks for the expert tips.
Michael Butler i would imagine using 3000 or 4000 grit paper soaking in water shouldn’t rub though the clear. But i guess its possible. I would use the 4000 and sand only enough to fix the damaged area. But he makes seem so easy.
Good Job Sandro! But honestly from a spray painters view when i saw the amout of paint chips from 2.10 to 2.15 in the video i said that needs paint especialy on a F430.
Nice trick..sometime I do the same thing like that..but what you have done is awsome clearly smooth finish..
Buddy, by far this is the best video about stone chip repair. Trust me, I have watched tons of them. Yours is the best! Subscribed and Liked!!!
At last ... a comprehensive well explained video.. big thanks
At the beginning, I was like: bloody hell, he f*kd up the paint!!! But then after the polishing...boy I was amazed! Good job sir!
Wet sanding is commonly done to brand new cars paint by owners who can’t stand the factory orange peel. It’s also done by bodyshops when getting a high end paint job to get an immaculate finish. Without wetsanding a touch up job would look hideous.
Just done my Honda Stream RS-Z in Cool Umber Metallic. I thought it was a so-so color at first, a few chips, less than the Ferrari and this is a daily Honda! Now after a good decontamination and clay bar and all chips filled, a good cut, polish and ceramic coating, wow! The metallic really sparkles under the light it has so much depth, color and shine it is astonishing it looks almost new. Really its a 10 year old car. Spent 2 full days when you add up the hours put in over a few days. Worth it; it looks better than the day I got it.
A great vid Sandro mate, a welcome change from polishing 😜 I will be doing my car this year with the same techniques being employed, thanks for the tips, very much appreciated 👍👍 keep up the good work
This is so above my ability but I watched through to the end just because the colour is gorgeous as is the car! Brilliant music too, great stereo width. Cheers cobber!
This video should be mandatory viewing for all car owners who care about their vehicle.
Awsome vid!!! Great tips to fill in the scratches.. got nervous seeing you sand around the chip but the outcome was 👍🏽!!
Those are pretty incredible results. Good job.
This is done properly ...... A refreshing change , most detailing on youtube is dogshit. This guys knows his stuff, when I worked in a bodyshop, this was the ONLY way other than repainting the whole panel.
Pan is a great detailer.
There are many great detailing channels on KZhead etc us thus guy talking about.

You confirmed what I was thinking about this technique. I just bought a used car and did redo all the “corrections” from the garage by myself. They applied touch pen as peanut butter while I followed your technique. It’s not that time consuming for me, even if I can understand this process costs money for the garage. But they are supposed to be pro... Anyway I did not pay for that previous job so I tried your steps carefully and I could get a wonderful job on a black sapphire paint. It is neat, I’m impressed myself! Big thanks! 🙏
