The mysterious life and death of Rasputin - Eden Girma

Get to know the story of Rasputin, known as the “Mad Monk,” who was assassinated for his involvement with the Russian monarchy.
--
On a night in 1916, Russian aristocrats set a plot of assassination into motion. If all went as planned, a man would be dead by morning, though others had already tried and failed. The monarchy was on the brink of collapse, and they believed this man was the single cause of it all. Who was he, and why was he to blame for the fate of an empire? Eden Girma explores the life of the notorious Rasputin.

  • Rasputin's prophecy about his death was actually quite accurate. He wrote a letter to the tsar in 1916 which said that if he was killed by peasants, the royal family would be fine, but if he was killed by the nobles, the royal family would not last more than 2 years. He was assassinated by a distant member of the royal family near the end of 1916 and in 1918, the entire family of the Tsar (the tsar, his wife, and children) were executed

The movie has an antagonist that goes by the name Rasputin, who also had connections with the royal family of Russia, however, he wants the family dead, and he has powers. I don't know for sure if the Rasputin in the movie is based off of the actual Rasputin, but after watching this video, I wouldn't exactly be surprised if the character was based off of the actual person

  • Fun historical fact: Although called "the Mad Monk"", Rasputin was never a monk. Also, some scientists believe that the poisoned sweet wine and cakes consumed by Rasputin actually may have had the effect of neutralizing the cyanide (in one study, rats fed sugar along with cyanide fared much better than rats fed only cyanide). I'm not sure how this research translates to humans since human trials cannot be carried out for obvious reasons. However it is an interesting theory.

  • I've always loved Rasputin. He's iconic. He was just a compulsive liar with incredible luck. They didn't talk about it in this video, but he was originally brought into the royal sphere to use his rumored "healing powers" on their son. Rasputin would pray over him and the son would briefly recover each time. They straight up thought he was magic.

  • Also worth mentioning is that the tsars wife suffered extreme anxiety and rarely interacted with anyone outside the royal family. This anxiety was triggered by alexei’s bleeding episodes, and Rasputin’s presence calmed her down, which in turn calmed alexei down, lessening the bleeding. Nicholas II had said: better 10 rasputins than one of the empress’s hysterical fits. There’s also the placebo effect.
