Rachel (Rae) Gleitman was born in Muncacs Czechoslovakia in 1923. In 1939, the Germans sent her brother to labor brigade at the battlefront. She and the rest of her family were forced onto cattle cars and deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. In January 1945, as the Soviets approached Auschwitz, she and other prisoners were sent on a death march. She and a dozen young women escaped from the march. Ms. Gleitman first returned to her hometown, then to Prague and finally to a displaced persons (DP) camp in Germany. She taught Hebrew in the DP camp and married. Ms. Gleitman is featured in the documentary, "Paperclips." She spoke about escaping the Auschwitz Gas Chambers at the HMTC conference, "Generations," which took place on June 8, 2014 at Hofstra University.

    • I had the same experience, back in 1983, when a dress-maker lady was measuring me for a bridesmaid dress. She had 3/4 length sleeves, and she stretched out her arm to take a measurement, I saw the line of numbers tattooed on her forearm. I remember my eyes filled with tears, and she just patted my hand in a casual way and said "There, there. It was a long time ago now." I have never forgotten her, and her courage.

    • History repeats in theory because people keep repeating and reminding others of the past experiences. However, history doesn't literally repeat itself. Why not? Because that old woman didn't have the same experience endlessly throughout her life, and she didn't remain the same age in the same moment forever either. Plus 1939 didn't happen twice neither did 1942 and so on... Time never stands still which would be necessary for history to repeat. History repeating itself is only theoretical, not literal. Even if someone has a time machine and could go back in time to relive the past. The 2nd moment they go back to that time technically isn't history repeating itself. This is because it is not possible to relive the past, as wonderful as it might be to dream that. Future generations can copy what past generations have done, only if they are educated. However, the future generations won't affect anyone from the past for the very first time, cause it would be a second time perhaps, but not the exact same time over again. Even if the situation includes the same participants from the first time. The following times may be a very close copy, but not a repeat of the first time. The 2nd world war wasn't a repeat of the 1st world war. Whatever happens on Monday is not a repeat of what happened last Monday either. They are 2 separate Mondays not the same one.

  • I would like to have heard her tell about her liberation from the camp, and what she experienced afterwards She showed such spirit and determination to survive.. this is so evident in the stories of all the other survivors as well. When I was in Israel, I saw many survivors like her that had very strong outcomes and some others that had emerged from the experience with their minds shattered to the point that they could no longer function and had to be cared for in a mental hospital all the rest of their days. They were broken. It was heartbreaking to see, believe me. It made me feel numb with sorrow. So I am grateful to hear stories of those that survived more or less intact like Rachel here who courageously and unselfishly was able to share her experience of that terrible time and how she got through it. In so doing, she heals and we understand

    • Just today I learned about the Kielce pogrom ( Poland, if I remember well ) which took place in 1946, that means after the war!!! Jews that lived in that small town had survived the camps. In that day, they were rounded up in the village square and 46 of them were killed. It started with some story about a polish kid who told a lie about being kidnapped bi a 'Jew'. The police took part of the killings. So, when I hear people asking "why" or "how could this happen", I think, it's just so easy...

      @aterry3863@aterry3863 Жыл бұрын
    • @@aterry3863 but history is all in the past. Therefore it doesn't exist in the present, nor in the future. Why not, because you can't drink the same coffee twice, you can't break your leg the same time twice. Nobody dies twice, no war repeats. Probably why they call each war something different than the one before. One may assume Because war keeps happening, that history repeats, but that is a misconception because as I said you can't kill someone twice, nobody dies twice. Plus, you cannot repeat the past because time moves forward. Even if you had a time machine and assuming you could go back to a previous time. You still wouldn't be repeating that time, because it would be a new time it would happen, as in the 2nd or 3rd time, not the very first being repeated again. Cause once it happens once there is no way to repeat it all at the same time and also have it be history. Because if you had time machine you would be in the present time, as hard as it may be to believe. Even though it would feel like the past. But nobody has a time machine. And you can only do something once. Even if it seems like it happens over and over. But that again is wrong because you don't drink the same glass of water, you don't eat the same sandwich, you don't kiss the same kiss, etc. You don't experience these things many times throughout history as the exact same moment in time for the first time. They happen in a sequence like 1, 2, 3... Not like 1, 1, 1 Time doesn't repeat, therefore history doesn't repeat. Charlie Chaplin didn't come back after his death, to live And to be born again in 1889. Why not? Because it is no longer 1889, cause it is 2023. Sure you can have comedy in the future, like in the past. As war exists in the future as it does in the past as well. But it isn't all the same players. The American president isn't always the same man, nor is he stuck on the same day and time for all eternity. Cause time moves forward. Things may not appear to change, or they may appear to repeat, but history is not of those things that is capable of repeating. Try eating the same cookie, or the same bowl of ice cream, or the same slice of pizza, a second or third time. You cannot, but you can eat a new slice of pizza later, but you can't eat the same one more than one time. Hence why history doesn't repeat. People in the future are more inclined to copy the people in the past whenever they are educated about the past, but history doesn't actually repeat. And future people copying the past generation is less likely to happen when someone has no knowledge of past events. You can even name everyone the same thing, but that only causes more confusion about whether history can repeat. Cause even if 2 people share the same name, they don't live life at the exact same time. Even if 2 people co-exist in the same time and place. They can't occupy the same physical space at the same time. They have to take turns. Even if they are both Bruce Lee. Taking turns means not repeating history. Why not? Because each person does it at a separate time. So if you stand in line at the grocery store at 1pm, I can't occupy that same spot at the exact same time. I have to wait until maybe 1:05pm to occupy that spot you had previously occupied. But it isn't you doing it again at 1pm, but even if you could it would be the 2nd time, not the very first time every time, in order for history to repeat. Again and again I repeat that history never repeats itself. Because time never allows such a thing to happen. People have no control over it. A rock band in the 1980s are not the same age now as then, and even if they perform the same songs many times at the same old spots they did back then. That is a new chapter, not the same old one. It may appear the same, but it really isn't. Try breathing the first breath a second time. Not possible. Try having your first kiss a second time, not possible. Try watching a mother give birth to her first born a second time, Also not possible. Similar things can happen over and over again, but they are happening at different times. So, once again history isn't repeating itself. You can buy your favorite food from your favorite restaurant every single day. But again you can't go back in time and remain in that moment without going forward. While only buying that first favorite meal every single time. Because history is the past, if you buy another it is the present time, until it becomes the new past, and the time before becomes a more distant past. You don't buy anything before you buy it, that isn't possible. Nor do you repeat buying what you bought the day before. Cause that sandwich is already history, hence why you go get another one in the present time. And make plans to do it in the future. But history doesn't happen across multiple times. The past is history. The present is now, but it doesn't last long, and the future is what we chase. Cause as they say "tomorrow never comes. " Cause tomorrow becomes today, the here and now... Hence why we chase tomorrow. Anyone with an understanding of how time works, and how the past, present, and future apply in realistic circumstances, those people should never assume that history repeats itself, because it DOESN'T. Only misguided people are foolish enough to assume history can repeat. Doing the same thing over and over again. is not the same thing as history repeating. There are so many examples of how history can't repeat, no matter what anyone foolishly assumes. Do you think movie stars keep making the same movie the first time every time? You might watch it 5 times in a row cause you love it, but you cannot possibly watch it again at the same point in time, while you watch it for the first time, a second time. Cause you can only watch it once. Even if you play the same movie on separate DVD players all at once. It still represents the present time. Not repeating something in the past. The past doesn't not come back. 9am Monday January 1st 1900 as a made up example wouldn't happen again, assuming January 1st of 1900 was a Monday. But that aspect is not important. Because the principal is the same regardless what day the 20th century began on. Time does not stand still endlessly. But even if time did, doing anything a second time would never be the first and only time every time. Cause history does not repeat. Nothing can make history repeat not even if time stood still. Time is a concept that helps us distinguish between the past, present, and future more clearly, but even if time as we know it was eliminated like the 12 or 24 hour clock systems. If they didn't exist. Time still would move forward even without the ability to measure it. Simply because doing something more than one time means time is moving forward. The last time you did something was the past, but the very next time you do it is gonna be the present, but if someone else copies your actions. History isn't repeating itself either because you aren't back there doing that activity in the past. Someone new is doing it in the present. I could keep coming up with more examples and go on and on about how history can't and will not and has not ever repeated. However similar things can happen later most likely because of education, but once again not because history can repeat. Cause time does not go in reverse, nor does doing something a 2nd time represent history repeating. Theoretically for history to repeat you would have to do the very same thing for the first time every time, at the same exact time. But as I have pointed out that isn't possible. Cause you can't do anything two or more times at the exact same time and have it be history repeating that would be the present time that you are doing something in , history is what happens after you already finished it. But to repeat that activity you again can't go to begining and start again. Cause the 2nd time isn't history. I have killed this dead horse I have been kicking repeatedly to make my obvious observation that anyone with a Brain should simply accept, and not debate. Cause if they debate it, it means they are silly. And have no understanding of what history is.
