  • What's unconscionable in Florida is that my property taxes fund primaries that, as an independent, I'm not allowed to participate in. Party members say it's a non-issue and that all I have to do is register with a major party - as if my right of free association didn't exist. I have no problem with closed primaries per se, but I think they should be funded by the parties - not citizens through taxes only affecting property owners who may not agree with significant policies of any party.

    • I've thought of this a lot and have come to the conclusion that parties should have to pay for their own primaries if they appear in public elections. Parties that refuse to pay will pick their candidates in a private manner instead.

  • Gerrymandering is a problem but "closed" primaries are kind of based on the idea that the nominee of the Democratic (or Republican) party should be selected by Democrats (or Republicans. What do you do when you're going into an election with an incumbent on one side and a wide open field on the other? Opportunities for mischief making, ala "Operation Chaos".

  • “…until we reform our system of primaries.” So, there is no solution then.

    @Acer_Maximinus@Acer_Maximinus17 күн бұрын
  • I have no idea what this guy's proposed solution is, since it wasn't discussed in this clip. But here's mine. 1) Ranked choice voting for all elections. If there are N candidates running, everyone ranks the candidates from 1 (least desired) to N (most desired). Total up the points thus generated and pick the winner(s) based on that total. (This allows second, third, etc. choice votes to affect the outcome, but less strongly than first-choice votes.) 2) Eliminate primaries entirely (except for Presidential elections). Multiple candidates from the same party can run in the general election; the above points scheme captures preference within a party as well as preference between parties. (It's for this reason that I prefer this points scheme over the instant-runoff system in use by a couple states. In the latter, second-choice votes are only considered if no one gets more than 50% of first-choice votes, so one party having more candidates running than another would dilute the votes of that party's supporters. Allowing second-choice, etc., votes to affect the outcome helps correct for that.) 3) Multi-member districts. If a state has, say, 6 seats in Congress, all candidates for all six seats run in the same election. The top six candidates according to the above points scheme go to Congress. 4) Do the same for state legislatures and city councils, etc. (At least some city councils already do this.) 5) Assign electoral college votes proportionally, using the same points scheme. Lets say candidate A gets 60% of a state's available points, candidate B gets 35%, and candidate C gets 5%. In a state with 8 electoral votes, candidate A would get 5 of them and candidate B would get 3. These things can all be done at the state level, with no need for any Constitutional changes or Congressional involvement. Steps 3 and 4 make gerrymandering impossible.

    @erikjessup4495@erikjessup449517 күн бұрын
  • Primaries are where parties select their party candidates. Any eligible voter can vote, they just have to declare a party. Gerrymandering is a much larger problem.

  • All the initiatives to have non-aligned voters have their say in primaries is a crap idea: the primaries are private parties. That is why no court can decide who is allowed to be on a primary ballot - but when it comes to official elections, the candidates who are chosen by their parties can be disqualified for their office like lack of citizenship (Republicans would vote for Putin if Trump is not allowed because that would repeat the 2016 election result, which made Trump act as Putin's VP for the USA) or by the 14th Amendment - which was blocked by the STPC (the Supreme Trump Protection Court, formerly known as SCOTUS).

  • While it is easy to recognise that primaries for a particular party's choice of candidate often results in those successful having to play to the ultra partisan, it must be remembered that it is the party's candidate who is being chosen, and not the election itself for who will represent the district/state. The way to choose better representatives/senators is to vote at general elections, not to tell party members that others may select their candidate.

Otherwise you end up with this situation, as we often do in Canada (I’m approximating the numbers to illustrate a point): 30% vote for the liberal Liberal party, 30% vote for the liberal NDP party, and 40% vote for the conservative Conservative party. We end up with a conservative government that 60% of the electorate voted against. Ranked order ballots might solve that. Combined with multiple parties, that could work.

Trump can tell Lara he will personally select and approve every single republican candidate across the country. That is Republican Party business. In Canada my MP candidates are selected behind closed doors by the party apparatchiks, not by voters. The candidates don’t campaign. They don’t necessarily even live in my city. Someone gets elected and voted how the party leader tells them. Unfortunately I have Trudeau leading the country and at no point do I have a chance to vote up or down on him. American academics can get over themselves on how to fix anything and everything. We also have a senate that isn’t voted for and does next to nothing and we have some person representing the monarchy who has more say than the average citizen. Get over yourself America.

  • What is the difference between a constitutional republic and a democracy? By definition, a republic is a representative form of government that is ruled according to a charter, or constitution, and a democracy is a government that is ruled according to the will of the majority. We are both a constitutional republic and a democracy. Furthermore when POTUS violates the constitution then your argument falls to pieces. According to Wikipedia, Algeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, North Korea, Laos, Nepal, and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic are examples of republics that are not democracies. So, when these fascist say they want a "republic" with no "democracy" they are saying they want us (US) to be North Korea.

    • “We’re not a democracy!” Is only shouted by people who don’t know what the word means.

    • @@lebojay The Founding Fathers explained why they left that word, "Democracy" out of the Constitution quite well. Democracy is rule by people, Republic is rule by law. The problem is that laws only work on Makers not Takers.
