How to Clean Broccoli 🥦 to Avoid Eating Worms 🐛

In this video I’ll be discussing how to clean broccoli to avoid eating worms. If you’ve seen my video on the TikTok trend of strawberry cleaning with vinegar and salt, you already will have some idea of how to clean broccoli to avoid unwanted visitors. So, cleaning your broccoli is always a good idea as you won’t only be getting rid of creepy crawlies, you’ll also be getting rid of grit in the vegetable itself.
After doing the video following cleaning strawberry like the tiktok one with bugs, I decided to try the same on broccoli I had recently bought. Makes me wonder how many broccoli worms I have eaten in my life. How do you clean your broccoli?

  • Problem is that once I find even one aphid or worm on my broccoli, no matter how much washing I do after that, I'm convinced there's some stuck in between the floralettes and I could not possibly enjoy eating it even as much as I may want to. Now I'm sad. :(

Knowing that there are bugs, dead or alive, in between the flowerets turns me off the veggie. I can no longer go to Chinese restaurants and eat the stir fries cuz that is all that goes through my mind. And especially because in restaurants they don't wash the vegetables most of the time I'm sure. I am my own worst enemy 😆

  • Pick it early rather than later. I find if I pick smaller heads of broccoli there’s less worms. If you wait and try to pick a gigantic head of broccoli you will most likely have green worm. Just cut it up and use warm salt water for 15 minutes and that takes care of them. If you knew how many bugs we eat every year you would not want to eat vegetables again. There’s no harm in bugs just extra protein!

  • When I first discovered worms in store bought broccoli I started thoroughly picking through florets every time and without fail I find worms every single time regardless of what store I buy it at or whether or not it’s organic. I always loved broccoli but have been too turned off by the bug experience to continue eating it regularly. It’s a super bummer as I’ve been vegan for about 20 years and broccoli has always been a staple veggie. Broccolini is a really nice alternative though as the florets are very small and easy to scan/rinse. Also the stalks are nice and tender/crunchy without a thick skin.

Ended up picking them off in the florets or throwing them out. I can't seem to find a good way of removing them and upset this method wasn't enough. We eat fresh salad daily.
