  • One of the things I love about this scene is that it really shows off Marc Alaimo's ability to make Dukat sound like Garak - they share speech patterns, vocabulary, etc. It makes it feel as though Cardassians share a common culture. I think Alaimo and Robinson pulled this off really well - they allowed Dukat and Garak to be very much their own characters, but also gave them a common template to draw from so viewers never forgot they were of the same race.

  • Worf's self doubt was always a key part of why he was such a good officer. He always wanted to do the best thing even when he didn't know what to do. Sisko bringing out self confidence in Worf was a fantastic thing to see

    @WeyounSix@WeyounSix3 жыл бұрын
    • Aye. It’s also interesting when you see his conversation with Worf about refusing the resignation. Sisko openly states that he’s not sure what’s wise, that he doesn’t have some grand plan, but that he needs every good officer he can get right now, and Worf is one. I kinda feel like Picard, in that situation, would give a bit of a speech about it, trying to inspire Worf into being proud of the uniform, trying to talk him out of it instead of just saying “No, you’re too useful right now”. And this isn’t a slam against either captain. They just have different styles. Picard wants to inspire from on high, with poise, presence and authority. Sisko gets down in the dirt with his subordinates, not having as much pretense about grand plans or moral stands, but treating them like equals that he happens to be in charge of. Sisko turned Worf into a great leader. But he needed a great officer to do that, and that’s what Picard turned Worf into.

For example, Bashir told Garak the story of the boy who cried wolf. • To those saying that there's a script mistake in Worf saying he's never been on a ship with a cloaking device, it's likely not a mistake. While the Enterprise used a Cloaking Device in The Pegasus, it was illegally obtained, and the crew likely had to sign an NDA so that word about that cloaking device would never leave the confines of Starfleet security.

    @ThatElfNerd@ThatElfNerd2 жыл бұрын
    • Also we have to define “had” a cloaking device. If we just mean there was one installed sure the Enterprise had one temporarily but if we mean one that had such a device built into the ship as an integral system, then he hadn’t been on such a ship.

The Enterprise used a cloaking device to pass through solid rock after the same device malfunctioned and killed the USS Pegasus' crew. Along with the rest of the Enterprise, Worf was sworn to secrecy regarding the project, so when Sisco asks him "is everything alright" his immediate response was "yes." Knowing Sisco won't buy this, he contradicts himself before Sisko has the chance and tries to cover his unease with a false truth. I think a previous comment said it best. • The Pegasus didn't have a cloak, it had a phasing unit. The entire project was designed to side step the no cloaking rule of the Treaty of Algeron by making a device that wasn't a cloak that could perform the same function as a cloak. Picard knew that Pressman was being a "Rules Lawyer" and trying to work a "Rules as Written" angle that wouldn't fly with the Romulans which would complain that it violated the "Rules as Intended". This being said, in the most technical sense, Worf was correct when he said he hadn't been on a Federation ship with a cloak.

  • I know that Dukat was meant to be portrayed as slimy for switching sides during the coup on Cardassia but in my opinion, it was justified since Central Command threw him under the bus during the debut of the Maquis and blamed him for having weapons sent to Cardassian colonists in the DMZ since they unfairly blamed him for the failure of the Occupation of Bajor. Therefore, he had no reason to remain loyal to those who stabbed him in the back so he simply returned the favour plus he wanted to live both out of a sense of self preservation and to continue serving Cardassia.

    @girlgarde@girlgarde4 жыл бұрын
    • Agreed. Dukat privately believed the civilian government was a bad idea, and was burned for supporting a movement he didn't believe in. And Dukat's beliefs were proven right, when the civilian government all but capitulated to the Klingons, leaving the Cardassian Empire a withered husk. Dukat only fucked up when he allied with the Dominion in a desperate gamble. It should have been clear to any Cardassian, Dukat included, that an alliance with the Dominion meant slow annexation by the Dominion. Dukat was simply too high on his own pride, wanting to be the savior that would restore Cardassia.

      @ndalum75@ndalum754 жыл бұрын
    • @Thelondonbadger What good does being on the winning side do you, when your "allies" occupy your planet and become your security forces? When your proud people are reduced not to being a secondary power, but a servile race? I don't think for a second Dukat would be happy with that, nor would any self-respecting Cardassian. Dukat was simply too proud to see it, and the worst aspects of the alliance didn't appear until after Dukat disappeared.

      @ndalum75@ndalum754 жыл бұрын
    • @Thelondonbadger You can make the argument that it's better to live a slave then die free. But no Cardassian signed onto the alliance with that understanding. And no Cardassian would have accepted that line of reasoning either. The Cardassians aren't liberal utilitarians like the Federation. They believe in the glory of Cardassia as an empire, and are willing to fight for their empire. The well being of Cardassia is what's most important to them. Any humanitarian concerns about odds or numbers of people lost would be irrelevant to them, what matters is the continued existence and prosperity of Cardassia. For them, that's the only reason to sign that treaty. If they realized the Dominion had no intention of keeping that end of the bargain, no Cardassian, not Dukat or anyone, would have accepted that treaty.

      @ndalum75@ndalum754 жыл бұрын
    • I see some of you confusing the Dominion's relationship with Cardassia in the later stages of the War with what it was in the beginning. Dukat oversaw the inclusion of Cardassia into the Dominion. They had Dominion security because they were part of Dominion. They were not a servile puppet state, they were part of the fold. It was only after the loss of DS9 and their fleet in the wormhole that the relationship began to change. And as the war dragged on, the deficiency of the Cardassian military became more apparent and necessitated more direct Dominion control and the addition of other ally states like the Breen. And it's clear that the Founders were not impressed with Dukat's successors in terms of their abilities to achieve victories. The Cardassians were becoming more of a liability than a contributing member of the Dominion. Had the Prophets not interfered and that Dominion fleet been able to come through the wormhole, Cardassia would not have been put in a position where its weakness were so dramatically exposed and the Founders would not have seen the need to keep moving them further and further down the ladder of importance.

  • Worf's choice of words isn't all that surprising. The cloak used by the Enterprise was temporary and an illegal prototype. The cloak on the Defiant is perfectly legal and used as a matter of course during missions. A piece of tech integrated into the ship's systems like the replicators or transporters. Not a barely functional experiment, tied into the ship with fingers crossed.

    @youpeoplearecrazy374@youpeoplearecrazy3744 жыл бұрын
    • The Pegasus cloak wasn't exactly a cloak. It wasn't a stealth system like other cloaks, it fully phased the ship out. It's not simply cloaked, it's just not really there. The Pegasus cloak was a vastly more powerful device. It was so potentially powerful that the writers pretty much have to ignore it because it would completely change the setting.

      @Elthenar@Elthenar Жыл бұрын
