HDPE Knife Handle - Recycled Plastic Chef’s Knife Scales
💚 A huge thank you to The Brotherhood: / brothersmake

In this video we turn recycled plastic HDPE bottles into a set of knife scales for this beautiful chef’s knife that was sent to us by Bespoke Bloke Designs. We made a custom knife scale plywood mould for this and then ripped the blank in half to give us a matching pair.
From looking around on KZhead and Instagram, we can’t find anyone else that has used HDPE as scales on a chef’s knife in this way. Plenty of hidden tang versions but none as a full tang chef’s knife. If you have made one or seen one made then be sure to share it with us!
We chose to use Corby fasteners to attach the scales to the tang of the knife. This is because HDPE doesn’t work very well with glue. We did add black-tinted epoxy as well but this was mainly to act as a gap filler. The Corby fasteners are doing the majority of the holding work. We added some cut-lines and roughed ip the steel to give the epoxy a slightly better chance of holding.
This was a really fun build and we absolutely LOVE the end result. Definitely going to be making more of these in the future. What do you think of our colour selection? What colours would you chose?
Thanks for watching!

I really really enjoyed this video and yes i give it a thumbs up too
i know im randomly asking but does someone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account..? I somehow lost my login password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me!
@William Simon instablaster =)
What bottles did you use as raw material?
This channel is so underrated. Thank you KZhead algorithm for recommending this!
Using the washer, genius!
Haha its a nifty trick!
@@BrothersMake I didn't spot it first time around, I had to go back and watch the video again. Luckily, it was quite early on. For anyone else puzzled about this comment, at around 0:31 they draw around the knife tang using a washer to provide a uniformly oversized template for moulding the plastic.
That’s my take away tip!
Love the idea of upcycling plastics like that. Great techniques!
Absolutely beautiful! There is so much plastic everywhere and you guys can make use of it in everyday things. Marvelous! Thanks for sharing!!!
So cool! I love how rounded it came out!

I've been collecting HDPE bits slowly because I wanted to try exactly this on one of my blades. Would love to see how it's holding up months from now. Love your vids!
Thanks Jon! Be sure to send us a pic if you do, would love to see it 😊
Would love to hear if you’ve tried this by now, I’d like to know if it’s a durable handle material compared to other materials
@@FoxTCG for a kitchen knife it will be enough but im not sure about survival/utility purpose knife
Gosh that’s stunning !

I must confess ...: I enjoy watching vids on things almost for sure I'll never gonna do.
Love it, I enjoy making mica scales but ill have to try HDPE scales, they are definitely more environmentally friendly with no epoxy required
This looks so good!
Thanks Jolien! 😊
Wow!!! Amazing!!! Subscribed.
Smashed it 💥💥💥, well done, that knife is awesome 👊👍
Thank you brother!
Saubere Arbeit echt super gemacht. 👍
Very nice DIY project if you have access to a giant woodworking shop with all the power tools!

Thanks for watching!
Beauty lads well done 👍
Thanks bro!
salamat sa pag share ng video mo idol galing mo idol..
3:47 to 4:00 I was suprised how much the colour changed from before you twisted to after. It appears the black centre layer of the bottles you used came out to the surface after the twist.
Yeah they really become more prominent as soon as you start twisting with this particular bottle type!
You are soo creative.
Thanks!
Very very nice👍👍👍
bravo ,sei un artista
Me encantan sus trabajos .que papel le ponen para que no se pegue el plastico á la maquina
Молодцы золотые у вас руки и светлая голова
¡Excelente!
Really good job
Thanks!
Oooooooh!!!! You got a new sub!
Loved it
Thanks!!
muy bueno el trabajo
Just discovered your fabulous videos. I must ask, from where did the blue colour come since you began with white plastic. Thank you very much.
The plastic we use is actually triple layered - white on the outsides and black in the centre. Makes for some awesome marbling! Thanks for watching!
Lindo...parabéns. Que material é esse, para não grudar o plástico na hora de derreter? Grato.
Fantastic.....
Woooow.... amazing... beautyful... 👍👍👍
Thanks!
Mantap bang 👍 hasil nya sangat keren 👍 sukses selalu 👍
Very good 👍👍👍
magnifique !!!
Very good 👍
To quote Crocodile Dundee, 'That's a knoife!' Hope you're both doing well, mates. Not knocking how you're doing the quarantine videos, but I miss the interaction between you two, and your interaction with the camera. That said, let's all stay safe together by staying apart.
Haha thanks bud! Yeah us too for sure, we're hoping to get back into the workshop together again in the next few weeks, so you should hopefully see us back on screen again soon! 🤙🏼
The mustard was the real reason this was so cool
😂😂
@@BrothersMake Really, though. If you can find the French's bottles that are clear (Dijon, grainy, etc.), those are the best because you can see how much glue you have left.
Wow! That turned out great! Do you think putting some texture on HDPE scales would work? Maybe by filing in some cross hatching, or a similar technique?
Thank Jacob! It will certainly help a little, we actually did this around the 9:30 Mark 😊
@@BrothersMake Oh sorry. I don't know how I missed it.
Belleza de cuchillo😗
Didn't know I could glue wood with mustard, differently will try soon.
😅😉
LOVE this
Thanks James!
I'll tell you a little secret .... For the handles of the knives .... The holes at the external surfaces of the handles (no matter the material) must be conical!!!!!! After with the ball hammer make the heads of the pins in both sides!!!! Best Regards from Hellas (Greece)
Hi great work! Could you tell me at what temperature you heat the hdpe to get it soft and workable please... Thanks
Between 150-170C works perfect 🤙🏽
@@BrothersMake thanks!
With the hand sanding: did you jump directly from 100 grit too the 2000? Thanks for the video!
No, we worked our way through the grits 👍🏽
A lovely piece. Would have orderded a sexier, lesz angular brass roundel, though. 🙏 What steel is that, please.??
Beautiful workshop!
I like so much the tools machines that You show in this video. Please, Could You send some references about it?
Sou fã de VCS
Three things: 1) Awesome job! Those scales look great (as does the entire knife)! 2) Do we really know what kinds of glue will work with the HDPE sufficiently to adhere to a tang? Has anyone glued some up without pins and tried to rip them off to see what the adhesion was like. 3) I just looked out in my garage...every single motor oil and ATF bottle was #2 HDPE. If you want a ready source of HDPE< hit your buddies up for their old oil bottles. My Mobil1 comes in a nice shiny gray/silver color (to mix with black), some STP oil of my son's was a sort of sparkly red, I think the colors would be endless. You'd just have to clean them well but heck...drain good, strip them up. into a tub of hot water and soap, I think you could do it fine. Thoughts?
1) thanks! 2) yeah, we’ve done a decent amount of testing and it’s just so non-porous that the glue has a hard time. Apparently there are specialist glues that could possibly work but we haven’t found the need to investigate that 3) we have actually used oil and antifreeze bottles already, they’re a great source of HDPE!
what were the bottles you used, they made such a cool pattern?
Nice!
Excellent work. Unfortunately he can't see which plastic you used. Please, could you inform me? Thank you and greetings from Mar del Plata, Argentina.💪
It says it on the thumbnail!
nice video how to make it and the result is beautiful
Thank you!
In other videos you used what looked to be baking parchment on the griddle to keep it from sticking. On this one it is more of a black sheet that seem heavier. What is it? I get tired of my parchment paper ripping.
They are called teflon baking sheets 👍🏽
@@BrothersMake Excellent, thank you. Very much enjoy your videos.
What if the tang was skeletonized and you welded the HDPE scales through the cavities with more molten HDPE? Would it still need pins?
That’s a very cool idea!
Belíssima 🔪 top
7:40 WH- WHAAAAAT How did you get such a perfectly smooth finish when there were those rods in there still? The rods aren’t even visible!
Ребята, вы топ, обажаю вас, ещё что мне нравится это нормальные саундтреки подбираете доя видео❤❤❤❤
What kind of bit did you use to drill the recessed hole for the bolts? Was it a small forstner bit?
Yep exactly!
Beautiful! How much time filing and sanding?
A LOT! 😅
Can't believe you managed to get both a shiny and Matt finish.... I'll see myself out.
😂😂😂
LOVELY
Top parabéns
The colores are beautiful.
Thanks - super happy with how these came out!
What it the black material you put in the sandwich press to prevent the plastic from sticking
Teflon baking sheets 👍🏼
What kind of rubber do you use to melt the HDPE in your grill?
Teflon baking sheets 😊
