The classic level change always felt awkward, the split step feels the exact opposite. It gives forward momentum, helps with the level change, and loads the back leg much faster making it easy to spring towards the opponent. The definition of a game changer and something that takes years to naturally progress towards, brought to light for all beginners such as myself to enjoy. Thank you.
Yes super beautiful detail
The split step is so hard to execute, it takes much longer to split step level change than regular. This results in your opponent being much further away when you lunch your attack. I think one of the most important details that was missed here is the head striking the chest. Burroughs hits his opponents chest so hard it forces them into their heels preventing a sprawl. Are you man enough to do it? 😅
the split step single handedly improved my hi c's and firemans overnight!
In 2019 who in the hell needs a damn library when you got KZhead channels like DPS Breakdowns teaching academic lessons.
people dont read to train this sport...
Diversity and archival mostly, but I get your point.
@@sirbutters1369 But the internet also offers you that.
@@kobiesboxing4956 Agreed. But to a different extent. When it comes to sports, internet wins hands down. Written material and non-digital media becomes more useful in other fields. Additionally, libraries can be more accessible to some individuals than internet access, although this statement becomes less and less accurate as time passes.
It’s weird cuz looking at Jordan’s double leg shot it seems very telegraphed but he’s so explosive and quick with it that you know what he’s gonna do but he still gets you
This is the beauty of perfecting your craft. Even when they know what you're going to do and when you're going to do it, you've done it enough times (thousands to millions) that it doesn't matter because you've executed it almost flawlessly. It also helps that JB is determined and driven to get that take down, probably more so, than his opponent is to defending it....Imposing of his will.
I find he conditions his opponents, he will do the same fake twice then on the third time he shoots with a double or a counter shot to a double counter. That way he is the master of the game. He isn't looking for openings he is creating them.
I have never been into wrestling, but seeing someone this good has made me a fan. He can do double leg blasts even if you're on both knees.
Im a newer wrestler in highschool who comes from a jiujitsu background where I always relied on being defensive and reactionary to score wins, but I want to be able to push the pace as a wrestler and currently struggle to be confident with my shot. In practice, I can have a clean and smooth shot that honestly looks and feels pretty good, but I can never put it into practice when I go live. The seasons just started and this is my first year so I got a ways to go, but this video honestly really helped me and taught me something very interesting that I will def try to apply to my live wrestling next time I go for a shot, loved the vid thanks for the clear and concise breakdown
Glad the split step is working out for you. Best of luck this season!
man the only way to get better at shooting is to shoot! shoot shoot shoot whenever you get the chance in practice when going live shoot whenever you get the chance so everytime! and i love jiu jitsu too and when you go roll in the gym, shoot on thoes guys too! thats a great way to improve your offensive wrestling is to shoot and get takedowns on jiu jitsu guys ! Good luck my friend
@@jxhnschuessler6826 hey man thanks for taking the time to read my comment lol, and yea i totally agree the only way to improve shooting is to actually shoot haha, what sucks is that my wrestling camp had been cancelled due to this virus now, wont be doing anything for a while :P
Even though you are a first year you know the most important part of our sport the mindset. Keep working hard man and don’t let yourself down. If you keep doing what you are doing you will become great. Awesome work man, keep it up
@@darkdragon5931 thanks man!
love the slow mo and the mini rewinds. it's something a lot of ppl don't do and it's very helpful.
Thank you for taking time to produce these. I don’t have a wrestling background so this helps when working with my kiddos wrestling journey!
GSP didnt either man. Just cause you missed out in high school doesn't mean you cant learn
What's jumps out at me is the distance covered in penetration, drive and persistence. His ability to keep moving forward, not quite a reshoot, is incredible
Another thing to add is his knee walk to get his hips in. Important piece that gets over looked.
Jb is so dirt nasty he can hit a double leg from 3 feet away
Burroughs is brilliant! I really admire masters in just about any field, because you know they didn't reach their zenith overnight. You know they've paid their dues, suffered, failed over and over, and maybe even considered giving up. But they found something they LOVED, and fought tooth and nail to make what they do, seem easy! They become harsh critics of their own work, and they NEVER accept excuses, or poor efforts form themselves, which is very difficult for anyone. They never feel like they've "arrived," so the grind NEVER stops! And we get to see the results, and can't help but appreciate it! The video does an excellent job of explaining Jordan's best takedown in simple terms, and you just know it took him years and years to perfect, and use against elite wrestlers.
Well said.
It might not be possible to even learn how to be this explosive.
@@mrt445 true, power is genetic
@@dabadc That's what I was thinking, you need the genes for that level of explosiveness.
I fucking love when you mix Audio with Text, it's the best form of learning for those who want to absorb knowledge from your videos. Also one can take a snap of those important concept schemes you show during the videos. Thank you very much!
Dan your breakdowns are the best I have seen...ANYWHERE...I love showing my son's the videos simply because of the detail you go into!
Thanks, Lee!
Awesome video man!! Its the smallest details that mean the most!
absolutely brilliant - thank you for making this
Awesome tutorial, everything I need as a bjj practitioner to start to learn takes down in the right way, from the best.
I got to see Jordan wrestle in a Dual Meet with Fresno State, Davis & Nebraska. Such an amazing athlete & unless you’re standing next to the man you don’t realize what a physical presence he is
Damn, outstanding work again, thanks man =D I've seen that you only have 9 patrons, which is absurd, so I had to pull the trigger. It's not much, but know that your work is very appreciated!
Thanks a lot - greatly appreciated!
I learned so much from this video. I applaud you. BJJ guys need to watch this, so that more matches would be entertaining!
Wow, great video! Apparently simple moves, but so many subtleties; love it. Just found this channel, got some studying to do! Thanks for sharing 🙏 - Patrick
Good stuff! Thank you. Keep up the great work.
Nice job man. Thanks for the lecture. 👍
This is the best video! Thanks for the breakdown!
Good JB and over all technical break down
I mean I'm nowhere near athletic enough to move like Burroughs, still cool technique just to know though haha.
That's why I use what some might call "old man takedowns". They are just low intensity, low risk moves that hinge on hand positioning in a clinch and momentum. I don't even have experience with HS or collegiate wrestling I train at a "jiujitsu gym" but all my standing grappling is wrestling based. I have slapped a few lateral drops on a few of my partners. It's funny to do all these takedowns I know at a Jiujitsu place. Alot of them don't even comprehend that takedowns are much Much MUCH more than just a crappy single or double leg. We have alot of sitters in this jiujitsu discipline.
@@GridironMasters to me, anyone not training takedowns is missing a huge portion of what makes bjj great. Especially in a self defense situation. Dudes are gonna be out here butt scooting in street fights.
@@vicarious8989 I almost like standing grappling more than ground work. Usually because once I take someone down I hold em in side control until I get a submission or the match is up. I'll flow more if I want to work other techniques than just pinning someone down though. Takedowns are gold though.
@@vicarious8989 thats what gives wrestlers the advantage over jiu jitsu ground workers. This is exactly why you see new teams like gordon ryans death squad destroying people on their feet because they mix in a bit of wrestling
@@GridironMasters this is why catch wrestling should replace bjj
Good choice on the background music
Thank you very much this video would really help me in my tournament on Saturday
Great job. Keep up the good work!

The best instructional channel about wrestling. Period.
Awesome breakdown brother definitely going to practice Jordan's stuff ❤
Very nice breakdown mate Thanks a lot!
Very well explained and great coaching instruction thanks for the analysis
Thank you.
Such an awesome breakdown. Thanks for this 🙏
Appreciate it!
Excellent breakdown! Bjj-dude here, trying to improve his takedowns, in particular double-leg. Thought I'd learn from one of the best (JB) and ended up finding your vid. Impressive breakdown! Subscribed!
bro you have next level knowledge 🙏🙏💪💪 from 🇮🇳🇮🇳
I have to thank you a thousand times. Thanks to this video i develop my perfect double leg that let me win the state championship.
You have no idea how much this helps
Amazing analysis, thanks
Great video, I think that what needs to be emphasized is the position of the back foot, it's flat with the toes pointed to the outside, like a T stance, that way he can penetrate with more force and cover a greater distance then driving off of his toes (even though Nolf does it that way). Also, when he took Dake down, what was even more important than the penetration step itself was the type of shot he took, and the finish. Basically, it was a well executed trap arm sweep single, where Burroughs shot pretty low (that's why he stepped and dropped on his toes with his lead leg) and grabbed the back of Kyle's knee (he could have grabbed his hamstring all the same) with the aim of pulling himself closer and preventing Dake from sprawling. At the same time, because he shot somewhat low, he trapped Dake's left arm below the elbow, thus neutralizing his defensive underhook. Given that, as mentioned before, Kyle was unable to move his hips back and away, he freed his arm in the only way left possible, by posturing up, which is exactly what Burroughs was waiting for as it allowed him to stand up with both hands clasped and finish the takedown.
Great vid. I’ll try to implement it
its amazing how much detail goes into one very basic seemingly move
I’ve been sitting here watching these videos and this is some of the best tips I’ve seen for wrestling
Found your channel today. I have to subscribe lol. Thanks for the awesome content man
Thank you for your knowledge greetings from America 🇺🇸
Great video bro i needed this
JB is a freak! Thanks for the analysis!
Those takedowns in the beginning are just beautiful.
Amazing video. It would be game changing to see this with yui susaki's shots and leg laces as well.
Good music choices. Great content as well.
DPS Breakdown - Great breakdown as always
Another great video! Love your work!
Thanks!
I watch this breakdown a couple times a month. The forward step and then level change never clicked with me, that drop into split step is my go to 💨
Thank you sir for your videos
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I struggled with double-leg takedowns for years and this video gave me the details I was missing! Thank you, I can’t wait to never pull-guard again!
Really cool to hear that. Out of curiosity, what details in particular helped you out?
DPS Breakdowns 1.Dropping my chest to my knee when I level change. I knew I was supposed to level change but I never had a specific “level” before I saw your breakdown so my hips were always too high. 2.The upward trajectory, like an airplane taking off. I was always looking down with my spine slightly curved, making it easy to stuff. 3. Placing my hands behind the knees as wedges to prevent movement rather than lifting their entire body weight. I’m relatively small and this detail allowed me to use technique instead of strength. 4. Getting my hips underneath my opponents hips. Previously I would try to finish from too far away and would be using my back instead of my legs. In other words my double legs sucked lol. Now they’re my favorite thing to drill, along with Iminari rolls lol.
Good stuff. Love the idea of a blast double leg / Iminari roll dual threat haha.
Best breakdowns on the web
wow this was so helpful, i love it
Great vid keep it up
You are the man thank you

Great video 👍🏻
Great video 💯💯
I learned so much from ur channel
the way he finished that one on dake was gorgeous. notice how dake was the only one who was downblocking
he had to go for the back leg too cuz he knows dake will wrestle out of the single or feed the single off the double. JB def a goat
Thank you for explaining barrow and staggered. English is not my first language and I’m still learning
Thanks
i think the back power leg is neglected in teaching most shots, I see so many wrestlers who dont do it.
True, I practice bjj not wrestling so take my opinion with a grain of salt but when I learned a double leg for the first time we weren't thought about the back leg used for power which I thought was a very obvious improvement which could be made, then I started using it and no one could deal with my takedowns cause they weren't used to the power leg being used
Hey want to say I love your videos and always look to implement alot of your insights into my own wrestling. On this one though I think you're missing a few things from my experience. But I totally could be mistaken. I believe the reasonings why some of these movements are happening is slightly different than how you're explaining. So basically the reason it's common to move the back leg so far behind has a lot to do with the physics of generating momentum using gravity and the body together. When you level change you are pulling up on the lead leg and waiting for gravity to bring you down. Moving your pivot point(back foot in the mat) further away from your center of gravity makes you fall just a touch faster. Combining that with the mechanical advantages of the ankle joint in reference to force generation gives you the fastest shot with the most forward momentum. A key difference between the split step and a standard level change is that in a split step you can completely change your attack angle, center of gravity, and load up your back leg all in one instant.. however this comes at a cost. Your entire momentum is moving downward and you can't change that until enough of your weight is down to allow you to grip and drive off the back foot. So its overall a much slower shot but you're hoping the change in positioning, angles, and timing catches the opponent off guard more than the raw speed of the attack. The drawback of the split step can be minimized by allowing the back leg to land first. This automatically starts the transition of downward momentum to slightly forward momentum due to the extended pivot point just like a standard level change.
I think that what you described in the last paragraph is what, more or less, Burroughs did at the 10 minute mark of the video against Kuramagomedov, when he shot a sweep single to the right. I think that dropping on the toes with your lead leg is the most explosive way that you can do a split step shot.
Reading all of this makes me feel like I'm reading a science book, but I love science because I love understanding the mechanics behind physical activities.
good explanation. this makes sense. i appreciate the zealous attention to detail. i can imagine a back and forth convo between you and dps being interesting but requiring full attention to follow.
Thanks for all the positive feedback I was hesitant to even say anything at all because I didn't want to seem like I was undermining DPS at all. That was definitely never the intention he is incredible and his videos show a huge love for the sports and hours and hours of film study for each video. And I can be long-winded at times so I tried to make my point as efficiently as possible without getting too far into the weeds. My insight is always available for whatever it's worth haha.
@@drewlawrence5289 haha it would be a fun conversation for sure .
Do one on Sidakovs (misdirection?) outside single. I can’t understand the mechanics of it
SIdakov's shots are goofy looking, but undoubtedly effective. I was considering doing a breakdown on his 2019 Worlds campaign.
Thank you video
The one vs Drake was extremely high level!!!
This channel is criminally underrated

Nice!
These are masterful videos! Although I never wrestled🙁, I had a son that did & one that's currently in biddy, I'm able to continue learning & helping reinforce what the coaches tell my son. I'm so into wrestling now, you'd think I wrestled, but your videos make me, almost, feel like I'm ready to coach.😎 Thanks & keep them coming.
Thanks for the comment!
It also helps that Boroughs neck is made of what seems to be steel.
I cant believe that he is taking down world class guys like he is taking me down..what a wrestler !
I love your videos...
This is great. I used your ankle pick series during last season. My heavyweight was a firs year wrestler that made it state last year ankle picking the big boys. Didnt place but got the tshirt. 😎
That's awesome to hear. I haven't seen the ankle pick pulled off too often at HW (one big exception was Kyle Snyder), but maybe it's just not emphasized enough. Thanks for sharing.
@@DPSBreakdowns I watched Jake Varner hit ankle picks in the world cup when it was Inglewood.
This is when they had Kyle and bumped up Jake go HVWT
Love Burroughs and love these break downs BTW - I'm not convinced that the power is coming from the left/back leg. Although the left leg plays a role in the power and definitely balance I've always felt the majority of the power coming from my right thigh and right hip. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on this? Thanks
I’m not a pro wrestler or anything but in my experience the right leg has the power but as you extend to reach the two legs you lose it because your two feet can only go so far so the back leg is actually what has the power to reach and do the takedown. In other words the left leg pushes you towards the person to do the takedown and finish it
Thanks sir,plz send leg lace technique ,
Damn great stuff There is a younger guy who drops levels I think you did a video on but I can’t find it He will drop, if you don’t, he takes the legs, then he does a bunch of more things with the level change but his name is escaping right now
Can you do one on Spencer Lees riding?
How would you do a double leg on concrete?
What video editing tool do you use that allows you to slow down and speed it up like that ? I need it bc I watch film and sometimes I want to meticulously analyze it and slow it down instead of constantly rewinding it
I use Adobe Premiere Pro.
Is blast double good for people with long arms and legs?

does anyone know what knee pads Yakup is wearing in their semi finals match?
9:40 Burroughs "picked" the ankle to prevent Dake from hooking his foot inside his legs. Dake wants the foot hook to help defend the takedown. Burroughs prevents this with the "pick", before the modified dump.
Good catch, he moved it to his left side and I think he would’ve shelved it on his thigh of Dake didn’t go down on the first dump
Please please do a lot more videos
Lots of PED use has given him that explosiveness & more energy when his opponents are tired but he can still keep going
What is the best takedown against bigger guys
