Homemade Center Finder

Making a simple, but accurate center finder from scraps of laminate flooring. It will be used mostly for woodturning, to mark the center of blanks.
Laminate flooring is a great material for workshop projects since it's basically MDF covered in melamine on both sides.
I used the factory edges to get an accurate square then used it's diagonal to mark the 45 degree angle for the ruler. The ruler itself is a piece of leftover aluminum transition strip.

    @LumpyMusic@LumpyMusic8 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks for your concern, but that is a 2 inch blade that only sticks around a quarter inch above the table. So worst case scenario it nicks my fingers! ...But, given my recent luck, it will probably pull me into the saw one day... bet that would make a great video!

  • Great project. Here in the Philippines, I would surly here "out of stock" at any local hardware store. The sad part is, several times I had to "eyeball" the center and live with the results. This is now on my to do list as soon as we return from a visa run to Thailand. Thank you for the inspiration.

  • :) Awesome seeing DIY stuff made locally. Nice shop and nice tools. That screwdriver handle is awesome. Last time i saw somebody using a "analog" caliper was 15 years ago and that was the last day of work of my dad. TIP: When you drill aluminium use small steps, plunge retract plunge retract. AL and other soft alloys drilled or machined with a steel purpose tool have a nasty tendency to stick to the tool resulting a pull of the tool into the material causing unexpected problems. Yes that is a thin profile but i bet you hand secured on the other end. Keep Up.

    @andreisima1977@andreisima19778 жыл бұрын
    • Multumesc! I was surprised myself when I noticed there are few DIYers from our country, at a time we were proud we can fix everything. I guess today we are more proud when we can buy everything. Thanks for the tip, sometimes I follow safety rules, sometimes I take chances and sometimes I get hurt. In this case the aluminum was clamped to the wood piece and the tail of the clamp itself prevented rotation in case the tool caught. I need to make a proper table for the drill press to allow better clamping but I have little time for the workshop and a long to do list :)
