How Devils Heal Forests

Foxes and cats are devastating the trophic cascade balance in the Australian ecosystem. The reintroduction of Tasmanian Devils is being utilized to protect bandicoots, bettongs, and potaroos. These small animals are essential for maintaining a healthy ecosystem. The trophic cascade balance will restore natural balance to the predator landscape, allowing the brush to grow back and for a healthy water supply to be maintained in the soil, preventing massive destructive fires.

  • Dingoes are also very important to the ecosystem, they are the largest non aquatic predator in mainland Australia and the only active predator of adult kangaroos and emus, they also help with keeping the populations of feral animals like boar, buffalo, deer and rabbits in check, but they are still actively killed in a lot of areas in Australia because they are still regarded as “non native”

I know that staff at the Australian Reptile Park are very involved in this desperate situation for these animals. This story was told here in 🇬🇧 as part of ‘Bondi Vet’ programmes.

  • How did the Thylacine fit in to the ecosystem?

    @idjles@idjles5 жыл бұрын
    • The ecology of thylacines isn't well understood given all the propaganda and misconceptions about the species that existed when they were alive, buts its believed they hunted midsize mammals such as wallabies. Tasmanian devils are predators of similar animals, but tend toward scavenging and digging out burrowing animals. They'll also eat the young of competing predators by seeking out their burrows, which is one of the reasons its believed foxes never become invasive in Tasmania.
