Why extremist militias are on the rise in the West African Sahel | DW News

The West Sahel is becoming Africa's hotbed of terrorism. The Sahel is dry, hot and vast, so it's difficult to govern. That provides room for criminals who've trafficked people, weapons and drugs for years. People are being displaced in the Sahel, by the thousands every single day. They're running away from violence perpetrated by extremist groups. Last year more than 700,00 people fled their homes. Among the perpetrators of the violence are islamist militant groups like Boko Haram, ISGS and JNIM, which are known to massacre communities and raze entire villages. These groups have become a constant threat and now control large parts of the region. Armed militias are gaining ground, despite massive military interventions. These groups have resources and man power.
Mali has been most affected by the crisis and it's the country where it all began. In 2012 seperatists and groups linked to al-qaeda took over the northern part of the country. Military efforts to flush them out were unsuccessful.
And now barely a decade later, armed groups are popping up in other parts of Mali. To date, much of the conflict has been between the country's two dominant ethnic groups, the muslim Fulani and the Dogon.

  • It's amusing to see all the comments of: "It's all about France, it's all their fault"! But 10 years ago when Mali was being overrun from the north to the south of the country, citizens and government we're asking, then screaming, for French help to prevent the fall of the nation. At the time France was reluctant to go all-in, African leaders in the region said France must come to the aid of Mali and surrounding former French colonial nations, it was a duty of France to provide "rescue" security. We all can't have it both ways, jumping on and off the bandwagon whenever the mood suits us.

Then you have ISIS rebels in the Middle East move weapons to Libya and those weapons then filter down into central Africa. China supplies a lot of weapons to various nations and sometimes those weapons get sold to Insurgents (like the Tuaregs). Then you have the other major players... the US, British, French, and Russians who may supply weapons to Insurgents under the premise that "The enemy of MY enemy is my friend."

  • I believe the resolution to the poverty crises in Africa can be overcome through industrialization for example state-backed construction initiatives such as freight trains that can connect African ports to economic zones. This, therefore, creates the opportunity to add value addition to raw materials and significantly promotes job growth. This is how America grew in the 1800s and the prioritization of national industries is how Asian economies such as South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan grew. This can be accomplished with the resources Africa has.

    • As a European, what do you think Europe could or should do? Is it more/less military aid, more development aid? I am horrified by what my continent has done to yours, but I realize that only Africans can ever truly know what africans need.

    • @@thomas6617 hmm i think the solution lies withvthe government of those countries. The problem with aid from europe while being somewhat effective is that it ends up being swallowed by the government officials in such countries further increasing income inequality and injustice . I think if the government of those countries are legitimate in the eyes of the people and are seen to be doing their best. They should be able to sustain themselves longer with minimal force.
