Why extremist militias are on the rise in the West African Sahel | DW News
The West Sahel is becoming Africa's hotbed of terrorism. The Sahel is dry, hot and vast, so it's difficult to govern. That provides room for criminals who've trafficked people, weapons and drugs for years. People are being displaced in the Sahel, by the thousands every single day. They're running away from violence perpetrated by extremist groups. Last year more than 700,00 people fled their homes. Among the perpetrators of the violence are islamist militant groups like Boko Haram, ISGS and JNIM, which are known to massacre communities and raze entire villages. These groups have become a constant threat and now control large parts of the region. Armed militias are gaining ground, despite massive military interventions. These groups have resources and man power.
Mali has been most affected by the crisis and it's the country where it all began. In 2012 seperatists and groups linked to al-qaeda took over the northern part of the country. Military efforts to flush them out were unsuccessful.
And now barely a decade later, armed groups are popping up in other parts of Mali. To date, much of the conflict has been between the country's two dominant ethnic groups, the muslim Fulani and the Dogon.

"Those who can make you believe absurdities can you make commit atrocities" Voltaire
@Kevwe Tony no I knew this quote for years after I left my faith
And 2020 is just putting turbo on the extremes in the world, not looking good for humanity😕
Cabaret
Never heard this quote before, it's great and so very true.
We're all capable of monstrous atrocities.
You should add Nigeria. It’s been awful there especially the north
nigerian slavery going unreported!!
D M no slavery in your country fool
Nigeria are power enough to fight any nonsense in their country your people need no help you are the super power in West Africa your people are joking
Don't generalise the nonsense of bokoharam with the whole of Nigeria. Bokoharam takes place at the border between Chad and Nigeria. Do you know how big Nigeria is? Stop saying nonsense
obinna you are an illiterate. Extremist militias include not only the boko haram that killed sores of soldiers in Borno state but the Fulani herdsmen also in the north. People like you know the truth but like to lie we know your type.
I think people are missing the central point that is Jihadism. And this isn't recent it started before colonialism and is only resurging.
Conflict resources, mix in a little tribal animosity and religion and you have all you need for a nice long term brawl
...not to mention the ol' farmers-versus-herders theme that shows up in Cain & Abel and the Range Wars that ended the USA's 'Wild West'. Also, a lot of that (going in favor of the nomads, the Janjaweed) in Sudan. Also, note unemployment at 12:00 .
Yes very sad, human nature I guess.
Nationalize resources, get the help of China to get infrastructure to as effectively as possible exploit and transport them, and get some molten salt nuclear power going. Resolve differences between ethnic groups fairly, and maximize agriculture/farming/herding and reclamation of desert. Otherwise exercise rational, democratic planning/regulation/distribution.
It's amusing to see all the comments of: "It's all about France, it's all their fault"! But 10 years ago when Mali was being overrun from the north to the south of the country, citizens and government we're asking, then screaming, for French help to prevent the fall of the nation. At the time France was reluctant to go all-in, African leaders in the region said France must come to the aid of Mali and surrounding former French colonial nations, it was a duty of France to provide "rescue" security. We all can't have it both ways, jumping on and off the bandwagon whenever the mood suits us.
true, comments are wrong, it's all about Europe and the Berlin Conference in 1884.

If you have murdered innocent people you cannot get amnesty. At the very least they should get labour for the state as part of a prison sentence.
This is incomplete without the atrocities going on in Nigeria, Fulani Herdsmen killings in the Southern and middle belt parts of Nigeria. Banditry and Boko Haram in the northern parts
Fulanis are victim
Thank you excellent! Program - we need more and more of these types of programs.
Guess whose disliking this video
Ofcource abduls disliking this video
Corruption under the system
Poverty is a condition, not a cause. It’s dry tinder and there needs to be a spark. The spark are someone/group/country funding these extremist groups and providing military equipment in the shadows.
I think climate change is partly to blame. People fighting for scarce resources and I'm afraid its only gonna get worst.
Abdulai Bah perhaps. These guys aren’t fighting with sticks and stones. Guns and ammunitions has to come from somewhere. Trace the source and we’ll be able to fine the answer to question in the video title. Everything else is just noise.
Poverty makes people easy pray for any extremes 😕
@@CondenseFact Look to IRAN mostly. Boko Haram is spreading weapons bought by Iran, then moved from Yemen to Somalia and into the interior of Africa. Then you have ISIS rebels in the Middle East move weapons to Libya and those weapons then filter down into central Africa. China supplies a lot of weapons to various nations and sometimes those weapons get sold to Insurgents (like the Tuaregs). Then you have the other major players... the US, British, French, and Russians who may supply weapons to Insurgents under the premise that "The enemy of MY enemy is my friend."

This reminds me of Perú when it faced the same situation back in the 80's.
Yea, lots of countries in SA faced problems with guerillas and the violence of dictatorship.
my family remembers the Sendero Luminoso, luckily their leader was captured and the movement has since died down
how was it solved?
@@Archeaon Intel. the GEIN(inteligence branch of the National Police), started following it's leader patiently since the late 80's until it's capture in 1992
I believe the resolution to the poverty crises in Africa can be overcome through industrialization for example state-backed construction initiatives such as freight trains that can connect African ports to economic zones. This, therefore, creates the opportunity to add value addition to raw materials and significantly promotes job growth. This is how America grew in the 1800s and the prioritization of national industries is how Asian economies such as South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan grew. This can be accomplished with the resources Africa has.
The issue is building the railroads. The governments are to corrupt and weak to support and protect investors.
In the end - terrible leaders equals terrible economies. AND Africa is FILLED with them.
Damn I wish this crises can end. I wish Northern Africa good luck.
I completely agree with you. There’s no hub for industry, industrial goods for transportation and commerce
until the country cannot maintain its population it cannot leave agriculture.
Great job on this one DW News. Hope and Respect from France.
France has nothing to do with this. There has to be a reason they are helping

Why this groups? where do they get this guns? how do they get this guns? where they use to get this guns???
As far as from the past experience, this is due to mainly poverty and no proper education.....i think from my knowledge tank.,
Arid unproductive areas, are the lands worth the fights?
More like unproductive areas makes them fight
This isn't about money, it's about protecting the people who live there.
and they have money but dont know where the income/money comes from

We need to increase business at any cost to generate employment and only then we eradicate such extremism.
It does not work that way.
The jihadists have a global vision for a caliphate, their doctrine tells them that the last Imam known as the Mahdi will reign over a one world empire.
Those poor poor people.. The children....
It is not that difficult. The two people have to relay on good collaboration if the britannica is correctly classifieing one as agricultural and the other as breeding cattle. The connection is obviously interrupted looking at skinny cows as in this video footage. The Gold mining area further south has no terrorism activity, even so promising profits, while the area that took my a few minutes to find maps indicating phosphate respurces is under attac. Which company or nation in the last 20 years send geological teams? Fixing conflict in TIA is done in killing the greedy in TIE
Africa is becoming more unstable with these ongoing wars. I wonder if there is more to these wars that is not being addressed.
Yikes.. I thought I knew where all the disasters were... When we think our problems awful!!!???
One word. Islam . Europe take notes 📝
Id rather be polytheistic.
We don't need notes, We know all about it. We knew all about it when Europe's homogeneity was Caucasian European. It's been going on since 637 AD
From my point of view, religious education has failed to offer to each individual the good morality to apply
Liberal education has failed, which has made these countries mired in ignorance and dependency
Religious education is what created the liberation movement that has now begun
Poverty is rising in these areas. There’s no industry, adequate housing, schools, hospitals, etc.
The love for the spread of Islam as stated in quran.
Poverty no jobs no future hunger corruption tribalism
If might was a Malian president I only gives this robel group just 1 month, I'll clean and swipe all of them
I think education is a symptom a factor.
Interesting to learn about Africa as an American. Yes, some of us do learn about the world around us.
Decoloniality takes many forms, especially if people had a religion before the Colonists. They draw from this ideology to fight coloniality and colonial drawn borders.

May be you should ask what France is doing in the Sahel and why it is relentlessly destabilizing Libya. Africa is no longer a French colony !
It all began when the europeans created their colonies borders, not giving a damn about the people, ethnics, tribes and culture. Dividing it them
You are right.
Guess what, there was war before the Europeans...
Islam was not created in Europe 🙄
Maybe. But we can't change the past, so we have to try and fix the present and future.
Not exactly, While Europe did have its hand in colonization, it was not the only one, and was not the first.
One word: Islam
@Chen Huang In your desperate bid to debunk his comment, you have exposed yourself as an irredeemable nonenity. The issue here is Islam and nothing else.
@Chen Huang Why does every single country in Africa with a significant Muslim population have a problem with Jihadis? From Somalia, Kenya, Nigeria, Mali etc. Is it just a coincidence? Why do countries in Southern Africa with a large Christian population not have any Jihadis? Coincidence?
Islam is the problem.

France controls a lot of West Africa’s finances which causing a lot of poverty in that region
France only controls the currency value, under mandate of those countries that can leave whenever they want. Ethipia is equally as poor, Lybia and Sirya and Yemen ravaged by war. How can you think it is France doing jihadism is all over the world even in countries that never spoke frog.

The channel labels videos inappropriately. Fear mongering is not acceptable from a news Corporation. A legitimate source would start with fair and accurate headlines.
The presenter has repeatedly echoed the religion of one tribe the Fulanis but somehow kept silent on the other tribe's religion. It is difficult to know her motive but she seems to be devoid of objective journalism.
So, tell us. What is their religion?

To my knowledge Africans only manufacture soup 🍲 . Weapons that's a white man thing. In Africa we're ruled by fear that's layer 2 of your gifted democracy.
Because of foreign intervention
From one perspective. it's because the colonial and post colonial sytem failed in addressing the people's problems (Africans).
As a European, what do you think Europe could or should do? Is it more/less military aid, more development aid? I am horrified by what my continent has done to yours, but I realize that only Africans can ever truly know what africans need.
@@thomas6617 hmm i think the solution lies withvthe government of those countries. The problem with aid from europe while being somewhat effective is that it ends up being swallowed by the government officials in such countries further increasing income inequality and injustice . I think if the government of those countries are legitimate in the eyes of the people and are seen to be doing their best. They should be able to sustain themselves longer with minimal force.
