  • What has saved me lots of time and on-the-fly math, even for something as simple as adjusting grade, is what the surveyors over here call a cut-and-fill rod. It’s got a zero mark, and 50cm marked +/- either side the zero, and a sliding mount you clamp your laser receiver to. The bottom section has a ruled extension that you can fix to whatever length you want. Slide the receiver to zero, drop the foot so you’re reading your grade, clamp the extension in place and then when you are walking the site, you just slide the reciever up or down and get an instant grip on how you need to adjust, with dead on accuracy. We also have a magnetic mount for the receiver that we can place on the digger stick, and if you’re careful you can grade pretty accurately by yourself in the cab. Because we’re using a more heavyweight (and relatively ancient, now) Spectra unit, we had fabricated an aluminium mount that has heavy magnets so we can stick in to an upright beam or steel-clad wall, and not risk running over the tripod while we’re zooming around with the loader, or tractor with a towed grading blade. (we’ve done far too much work inside shops and barns prepping for concrete or digging in sumps and plumbing lines).

  • How on earth do you jointly run a farm, look after three kids, and do a conversion of this scale, all while recording it on video. Do any of you sleep?

    • Because he gets the kids on jobs. He has lots of money. He has good friends and family to help and advise. Try doing that build on your own. Sadly British community family and society have died. Also his DIY escalation is steady, his skills and confidence have grown slowly over a decade.

  • About the squeaky track... The saying goes that "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" and I suppose the same goes for tracks. HOWEVER. Sometimes the cause of the squeak comes from the other side... If something is out of alignment, or whatever, on the Left side it can cause more force, more friction on the Right side. Just a thought.

  • Where is all the wind bracing? Agriculture building frames are built to a reduced loading. You have wind bracing in the roof but none it appears in the sides and the blockwork has been removed. Please speak to your structural engineer.
